This thing does everything you'd expect a Magnifier Workbench Lamp to do. There was another brand I found about the same price form a different seller and the reviewer said the springs were so tight that the lamp did not want to stay in place. This particular one has a couple of wing nuts at 2 of the elbows so you can put it into position and tighten them up. The glass stays exactly where you put it. If you loosen the wing nuts the springs are strong enough to pull the arms back to a folded position. For the price you can't pass this one up if you're looking for a magnigying glass to do hobby work on small things.

I've used this a numbe of times now. I have very poor eyes and this helps with repairs of small items like bearing, bicycle parts and pulling splinters. Leave the elbow fitting loose and then tighten them up. Stays in position just fine. The cover keeps dust off, but as extra protection for the underside light, I completely bag the head light with a plastic bag and twisty tie b/c of my dusty environment. I move it around easily from workbench to work desk too. Good lamp for the money and packed like gold from Ft. Nox.

Does it's job very well after increasing the tension on all the hinges so it stays put. Two improvements would be possible:

1) The lens protection cover tends to fall down when the lens is at an angle. There is a spring mechanism to hold it up but it is not strong enough. I rigged some rubber bands as hold down springs.

2) The lamp gives off too much heat. That is annoying since one tends to work with one's head close to the lens.

As I get older my eyes needed one of these.

Seeing the preponderance of very favorable reviews, I was somewhat hesitant to give this lamp a relatively low rating, but this was my experience with the lamp. First, the supporting arms are under-engineered for the size of the lamp head, which is 10" long and 7.75" wide it's not a featherweight head, which is not necessarily a bad thing but the rest of the rig needs to easily and freely support it. Second, the thumbscrews are undersized and it takes more torque than feels comfortable to fix the arm in position I got a sense that I would not want to be using them often because they might fail. Third, the uppermost thumbscrew secures the lamp head, and the head wants to rotate if not fully torqued down. Fourth, there is a lot of perimeter distortion in the glass. What's good about it are (1) the brightness of the lamp (florescent), (2) the glass cover which stays up by friction, (3) the very nice base made of cast metal not junk stamped parts, and (4) the protective cover over the bulb, something I've not seen before.

I use this type of lamp daily. You might not, and its shortcomings may work for you your mileage may vary. I am replacing a well-worn old companion lamp and was trying to get away with replacing it for $50. That didn't work.

Lastly, to keep things in perspective, here's the non-magnifying workbench lamp that I use and that I absolutely adore ... I want a magnifying lamp built like this:

We dont have any problems with lamp staying in place after setting it up. It is a good solid product and we are happy with the purchase. The problem I have and hence 4stars instead of 5 is that the light bulb burned out after 1 month from purchase. I think that is too short it is not being used everyday or 24/7. So I had to buy replacement and will see how long one bulb lasts.

I bought three of these bulbs to try in my outdoor lights fixtures. I am very pleased with how they are working so far. The lights come on instantly (unlike the compact florescent bulbs I was previously using) and the "warm white" color is a very nice welcoming color.

The connections between the individual panels of LEDs appear to be hand soldered. The connections on the bulbs I received were all well done and the bulbs feel sturdy. I am happy with my purchase.

I've bought 5 models of the Energizer Hard Case Professional LED flashlights. This is the loser of the lot. For this series, Energizer has obviously given a lot of thought to mechanical design, for the most part well-executed. The optical performance, however, ranges from poor to excellent. This 2-AA unit unfortunately is in the poor category.

(a) Price. This series is not widely distributed, and there does not appear to be much price competition. At one time, HD carried a selection of models at decent prices. But in my area at least, they've stopped carrying them. Amazon merchant prices are currently $24+ total. I got one for $16 elsewhere.

(b) Materials: Tough ABS plastic body and tough rubber bumper guards, including a bumper extending in front of the lens. Rubber O-ring seal on battery compartment. Rubber covered switch.

(c) Mechanical. Excellent ergonomic design. Bulky for the 2-AA size, but lightweight due to the materials. Contoured grip conforms naturally to the hand. Switch is on top, right under the thumb. Rectangular cross-section and textured rubber keeps it from rolling off a table or bench and going ker-plop (major gripe about Maglites). This is a very important consideration if you are working on a ladder and place the light on a rung or shelf. Butt has a molded loop to which you can attach a lanyard. Comes with a sturdy nylon belt holster.

(d) Battery Installation. Easy. Unscrew tailcap and pop in 2 AA batteries. As mentioned above, battery compartment has O-ring seal. Threads are robust and smooth acting.

(e) Switch. As mentioned above, rubber sealed and well-positioned. Positive click on/off. I like this much better than turning the head (classic Maglite 2-AA design) or tail. I also don't care for tailcap switches, so this is great for me. But if you prefer twist-and-turn switches or police-style tailcap switches, you won't be happy. Push down and release for continuous on. Once on, you can depress part way for momentary off (can signal this way if you wish). I like momentary on designs better (depress part way to turn on for a quick peek and release to turn off, or push down all the way and release to turn on continuously); but these are rare, except on the larger Maglite units (C or D cell).

(f) Beam. This is where the unit flops. It has three low powered LEDs mounted on a flat reflector with scalloped sides. Thus the beams do not merge; consequently, throw is good to only ~6 ft and the field is diffuse and uneven. Light has a slight cold bluish hue, but not too noticeable. This light is OK for taking a quick peek in closets, under beds, and under desks. But as a task light for extended use (working on engine compartments and in wiring closets, for example), the beam quickly becomes irritating.

Recommendation: In this series, there is a 2-AAA inspection light. It has a single higher-power LED with a longer throw, more uniform pattern, and a more neutral white color. It's also smaller and cheaper. See my separate review on that unit; I gave it 5 stars.

(g) Packaging. This series gets my nomination for "most frustrating", "most wasteful", and "most non-green" packaging. Some PR guy obviously took great pains to give the packaging a super macho look. The light comes strapped to a tough, heavy gauge sheet of plastic. The straps are industrial cable ties. Some people have complained that they've used scissors and broken them; others have complained that they've used a utility knife and gashed themselves. The *proper tool* is a pair of diagonal wire cutters ("dikes"). You need a medium size pair (~6"). If you do electrical work, you will have one. If you don't, try to borrow one. It's not a general purpose tool, and it's silly to buy a pair just to unpack a flashlight.

Batteries are included. Each battery is sealed in a tough plastic compartment, and it's not apparent how to remove it. So users have tried to cut through the compartment with a utility knife. Don't!! Very dangerous. If you look carefully at the back of the package, the back of the compartment has an icon of what appears to be a pair of pliers and the word "CUT". These symbols are hard to see, because they are molded black-on-black. The icon doesn't refer to pliers but to dikes. Again, if you don't do electrical work, you won't recognize it. It's also not apparent what you actually are supposed to cut. Close inspection shows the icon is pointing to a small plastic nub sealing the end of a plastic tab. You first cut off the plastic nub with dikes. Cup one hand over the nub and dikes before you snip. The nub will shoot out and you don't want it to whack you in the eye. Then use a small screwdriver to push the plastic tab through a slot to open the battery compartment and release the battery. Again be careful. The tip of the plastic tab is very sharp after the nub has been cut off. Don't press on it with your finger. Good grief. Although it is possible to cut the cable ties carefully with a utility knife, trying to cut the nubs with a utility knife or razor blade is very dangerous. Straightforward with dikes.

I have carried a Maglite in one form or another for many years. They are great Flashlights! A few points about them that I dislike are:

They roll around.

The metal is cold to the touch.

The 'paint' scraps off from hard use.

Enter the "Hard Case" series from Energizer! Call it plastic, or rubber or some other man-made material, but I like the feel of them in my hand. They don't roll around either!

I have 3 of these, one in my car, one in my wife's car, and one my wife uses every morning to pick out her clothes by! In daily use, it has never failed her, and after almost a year, she is now on her second set of batteries.

I have big hands, and she has very small hands, yet we both like the size and shape of this flashlight. It is slightly more bulky than a 2AA Maglite, but not by much.

I like the switch being on the 'top'. A high-quality switch is critical for a great flashlight, and this is as good as Maglite quality.

You might as well buy at least 2, as you will like it so much, you'll just end up re-ordering more...

I got this for my son, he is afraid of the dark and sleeps on a bunk bed. He uses it to see around the house at night when he needs to go to the restroom. The rubber cover is great since he has a habit of dropping it. Its not a loud drop and it survives the drop off a top bunk. I recommend this product as a household flashlight.

Tonight our small, black Yorkshire Terrier ran out the front door as my wife was walking in. It's Christmas night, cold and pitch black outside. Great... the dog usually runs 2 blocks before we see it, and we average about 40 minutes getting it back... in the daylight.

I pull on a coat, and grab 2 nearly identical Maglites from the drawer.

The rechargable MAGCharger RE1019 has a silver band. The other is an old-school Mag with 3 fresh D-cell alkaline batteries. They're about the same size and weight.

I hand one to my wife, turn the other on and start walking. She got the D-cell and can see maybe 50' in front of her.

I bought the RE1019 back in September on Amazon. I'm not sure I've used it before in a situation where I needed to light up our neighborhood, or where I was so keenly aware of the beam's strength and intensity (try finding a small black dog in a residential neighborhood, on Christmas night, with the alternative to not finding the dog being that you must explain to your sobbing children that you couldn't find their dog... you get the idea).

Let me tell you... this is one INCREDIBLY BRIGHT light. It throws a beam a city block. Literally. I was lighting up driveways 5 houses away. Same weight as a 3 D-cell, same size, but the difference in the beam strength and intensity is AMAZING.

I love MAG lites. Always have. I carried one when I worked security in college 25 years ago, and have owned many since then. This is the brightest and best I've ever owned. The rechargeable feature is great.

I'm buying another one and giving the old 3 D-cell away. Maybe I'll buy 2 more.

I have owned the classic MAG rechargable flashlight since 1984. Back then I worked in EMS in an urban setting and carried it at all times. Needless to say the flashlight was used as a hammer, a wheel chock and other things not intended by the manufacturer. I have replaced the lens once due to my fault. I have had only 4 or 5 batteries after all these years. I also had to send it back to Mag for some type of recall for the switch assembly. It was repaired and returned in a week. It had spent much of its post EMS life mounted in my car on the left side of the driver's seat. When I got a luxury SUV I was not drilling holes for the mounting bracket. It now spends its time sitting in a charger mounted in my home office. Becaue it is visible to other parts of the house, someone once asked me why I don't paint it. I am proud of the scratches or "battle scars" on the barrel. The MAG just can't be beat for durability. Truely adjustable focus from spot to flood with a simple twist. I still use the original style halogen bulb which has been replaced once or twice. When I first bought this I had also considered the Streamlight SL-20 which several friends bought. My friends regretted their choice. I have nothing but MAG flashlights all over my house and at least one in each car.

I've been using this same basic flashlight for 20+ years now in my job as an auto mechanic. It's the one tool I use on virtually every job, and it is a real workhorse. The one drawback with my older model lights was that the switches would eventually wear out, and Maglight will not sell a repair kit for the switch/socket ass'y. Hopefully, the new electronic on/off switch will hold up better.

Without question, this is the best and most reliable flashlight ever built. Do NOT let the cost turn you away, it is worth every penney! Mine is now 12 years old! Last year, I upgraded to the new Nimh battery, but a new battery every 11 or 12 years for about $20 makes this a very worthwhile investment. I would have spent more than $20 Each and every year (11 or 12 times) on D-cells if I had bought a regular flashlight. Also, back in the days of buying regular D-cell flashlights, I was buying them at least annually. Again, the ruggedness and durability of this flashlight are amazing making it not only cost effective, but the most reliable and dependable torch on the market. Mine is left hanging on the wall in the charging cradle all the time, so it is always ready to go. I bought a second cradle with the 12V adapter that I have mounted to the wall of my motorhome so when I go camping, I just bring my magcharger along and I am ready to go. Someday, I may buy another one, but I'm not sure why I would need it when one has served me so well for 12 years and with Life time support from Mag, one should last a lifetime, or longer, when I pass it down to my kids.

These LED lights are terrific. If you're looking to convert to LED, an important detail that lots of folks overlook (we initially did) is that the light from LED bulbs (no matter what the package says aboout "warm" or "cool" ratings) is often very different from other bulbs it's much colder even in the bigger name brands (like Phillips). However, this is not true with the Eagle bulbs the light looks exaclty "right" and "true"! A few reviews have noted that the Eagles are slightly larger than other brands true. However, I found that with a liittle patience and care, they fit just fine.

Color temperature is same as a halogen, but has a distinct green tint when measured in Photoshop. This bulb also was the heaviest of a group I am testing, with a fairly substantial heat sink. Unfortunately light output does not compare to 50W halogen. Length will be an issue for some when used in track light fixtures, since it is noticeably longer than a halogen. I am using them in recessed can lights so length is not a problem.

These are advertised as 2700K warm white and dimmable, however the color these bulbs give off isn't warm it's a harsh, greenish, almost fluorescent light that's nowhere near the warm glow you get from a halogen. These bulbs also don't work with all dimmers. I have fairly expensive Lutron digital dimmers (tap once to turn on to preset dimmed setting, double tap to turn on to full brightness, and press and hold for delayed dim to off). I installed these bulbs in a three-bulb fixture and even though the dimmer was off, when I removed the last halogen with two LED replacements already installed, the LED bulbs came on and started flickering rapidly. Same result with the third LED bulb installed, just a little less bright. I bought 5 of these and it was a waste of 75 bucks. They are very bright, certainly equivalent to the 50W halogens, but don't dim at the same rate as the halogens do; the LED bulbs have a rapid drop off at the end they stay bright and then suddenly go off as you progressively move the dimmer down. I would not recommend these just based on the color, but if you still want to try I would suggest getting just one to see if it's compatible with your dimmer. Lutron does sell LED specific dimmers (with adjustable controllers to 'calibrate' the dimmer to the LED bulbs), but after spending $200 on new dimmers already, I don't want to have to replace them again with even more expensive types. GU10 fitting, size, and build quality are good.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program For an office desk lamp in an office with a modern cast it will fit right in and look sharp. It isn't a lamp I'd have purchased ordinarily but I am very interested in LED lighting and this one became available for review through the Vine program for no cost. I wanted to rush the review a bit because the lamp delivered is not the lamp pictured although it is very close.

NOTE: The pictured item is NOT what you will get. I've uploaded two pictures of the base so be sure to look at them before ordering. The sphere instead of bar counterweight and the much shorter base cylinder makes the maximum height of the lamp a lot less than what's pictured for this item currently (Sept 25th 2012).

The lamp is shipped in one piece is very good packaging. The lamp itself is inside a made to order styrofoam case inside an inexpensive cardboard box which was inside the Amazon cardboard box. The cord is actually two pieces with the end of the cord terminating in a special thin two prong plug that plugs into a special adapter for your outlet. If outlet space is narrow you might have a problem. It is about the size of a narrow phone charger adapter.

Plug it in and go. Easy as that of course. The blurb about the choking hazard is with regards to the two piece electrical cord and wall plug adapter I guess.

This is, apparently, a bic lighter style lamp. The LED is not replaceable. So if that goes out the lamp goes in the trash or you fool around trying to get a warranty replacement lamp or perhaps a service center can replace the assembly? No way to tell from the contents of the package or the Amazon page. The simple instruction sheet is sensibly printed on an 8X10 piece of paper but the word 'warranty' is not mentioned anywhere on it. The only related thing is a mention of a damaged cord needing a qualified service tech for repair. The LED component is not made for self-service.

The light is not bright. I mean, really subdued like a night light subdued. That is perfect if you work in a darkened office and don't want to disturb others with a 100 watt bulb. If your decor calls for subdued lighting it will fit right in too. For example, if you are a teacher and you want a subdued light to do work while the class watches a film (or naps if that is your grade level), this lamp might be perfect since the arm will stretch it over what you are working on and direct the light down to the work space.

Along those lines, it is worth mentioning that you probably don't want to use it for long stretches in a darkened room. With your eyes in the dark and the work in the light it strains your eyes.

The LED component gets hot! Not like touching a long running edison bulb but you'll notice if it you touch it.

The adapter gets hot! Not dangerously for sure but you probably should have ventilation around it to prolong its life.

The instruction sheet advises against looking directly at the light source. Boy they aren't kidding. I saw spots for about 5 minutes lol. I think I counted 6 LEDs on the back of my closed eyelids while I was waiting for my vision to clear.

It is good looking and functional even if very dim compared to traditional bulbs. I knocked off a star for the hot-ish LED lamp housing, the limited height, the incorrect picture, and the disposable nature of the product.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The lamp is not as the manufacturer pictures it, but another reviewer helpfully furnished annotated pictures for what shipped: the lamp with the round handle and round counterweight is what I have. The electrical cord, about 5 ft long, does not seem to detach at either end, and the adapter at the other end may be too large for some openings in a computer desk and need an extension that will fit through.

The lamp itself is smart looking, although limited in physical function. When the arm is level, the light head is only 6" above the desk surface. The arm, at least on my lamp, will elevate up to 30 degrees from the horizontal -it can go a little higher, but not as high as the manufacturer's picture indicates and it won't stay at any setting above 30 degrees, at least on my lamp. 0-30 degrees is okay, however, and I have set the lamp base on a desk speaker (+ 5") and it works fine on a pedestal like that.

The light will well-light a working surface of 12-18" radius. As long as the light is below eye level it doesn't glare, and it seems to use minimal energy. The light does stay horizontal in any elevation, and can be adjusted to tilt upward ahead of the arm -it does not, however, tilt to either side of the arm, and you'd have to rotate the entire assembly on its base to move the light laterally. The LED light is not replaceable and that is a downside.

It came assembled and was reasonably well-packaged in plastic, with foam outside of that. Instructions are minimal; they do talk about plugging the wire into the adapter, but mine came with the adapter inserted and, judging by the feel, is not detachable, or at least I didn't want to chance it. No warranty in the paperwork.

In short: nice looking, reasonable as a precise-area lamp, esp. if you want low energy use or to avoid glare.

I've been using an older style lamp similar to this one, maybe 13 years old. It used a dual-level brightness bulb which IS replaceable. I've always used it in the low setting so I've never had to replace the bulb. The LED bulb on this one is NOT replaceable and has a lower brightness level than I am use to. Once the LED burns out (and eventually it will) the lamp will be unrepairable and end up in the trash. The packaging was secure, it only came with a one-page "directions" sheet, with no company warranty, logo, address, or phone number. My reason for downgrading to 4 stars is....the one they shipped has a loose wire/connection. Raising the lighthead up, down, or adjusting it turns the LED bulb off. That is frustrating, though I can live with it, but for a $75 item (Amazon price) I would expect better quality control.

Some people left negative reviews stating that these bulbs are too dim. I don't know what they expected from a tiny, frosted bulb. Anyway, I bought it because I wanted to get bulbs for my 3-light ceiling fan unit above my bed that wouldn't be distractingly bright for a bedroom. The bulbs are perfect for this. 3 of them provide enough light to read comfortably. Another thing to keep in mind is that the light is bluish-white in quality. I like this, but if you are the type of person who wants yellowish, mock-incandescent light, these are not for you.

I purchased these when I took down the Christmas decor and the kids exclaimed that they would miss the twinkling lights from the mantle and other garlands in the house. This was one of the key items in creating my DIY monster nursery. It helps tie the theme together in subtle way. Unfortunately, we rarely turn it on because it puts off very little light and is more of a decoration which is mostly what we wanted it for anyway. I was hoping it could be a night light but that didn't work out. Still a good purchase and looks great in the room. But don't expect this to put off a decent amount of light.

I bought this furry green Nessie lamp at a small neighborhood furniture store last summer for my kid's room. It's been perfect for her desk where it does a good job of lighting up her reading space (not bright enough for lighting the room).

It takes 4 AA batteries, but mine also came with a USB cable so it currently draws power from the computer. The bendable neck works well and makes it very easy to re-position the light anywhere you want. There are 2 settings for the light...click it once for a regular white LED light, click again and it will go to a color-changing LED that changes colors every few seconds.

Mine has not had any issues like some other reviews report. I will update this review if any arise. A fun addition for the room and the kids love it!

I ordered this lamp for my son thinking it would look cute in his room and be something fun to play with as well. Unfortunately it is a piece of junk. First, everyone please note the size of this thing, it's huge. Second, it arrived with a broken base. I contacted the seller and after a couple of weeks, they sent a replacement. The replacement was also broken, this time by the light fixture end instead of the base. It also made a strange rattling noise. When I took apart the base to figure out what the noise was, I discovered a dixie cup filled with cement! This is apparently their solution to preventing the lamp from tipping over. Suffice to say, they both went into the trash.

I didn't expect much from this product, but I was amazed when I received it. I ordered 4 at the same time, and all came working great. It is powered by 2 AAA batteries. I doubt it is actually 3W as printed on it, but it is about 30 lumens, which is bright enough for general use. The body is metal, and also has a clip on it, however the clip feels a little flimsy. The body feels sturdy, and has held up to many falls over the last 5 months. I use this daily for when I'm walking to my car in the night (about an 8 minute walk) and the flashlight shows no sign of reduced output,on the original batteries. I was also impressed when I saw that the tail cap has an o-ring seal. I have not tested the water resistance, however this flashlight survived a fall into a pool, and submergence for about 3 minutes. I think this is a great deal for the price, and will recommend it to a friend.

These are quite bright LED lights and put out a wide swath of even, soft light. I'd estimate 90-120 degree cone of light, useful for illuminating walls, objects and surroundings. I use them to help light up a gated entryway from the ground not only does it light up the gate, but all the tree branches above it. The light is soft and bright, like a 40-watt incandescent bulb light output, but only use 4 watts at their maximum setting. This means I can leave them turned on for long periods of time without much energy usage.

These are much better than the lights you find in box stores and local hardware stores these are solid metal cast (aluminum or brass), heavy, and do not contain plastic parts. These are the best quality lights you are going to find. The problem is they are expensive, but I got them to match a pair of recessed Kichler lights that are wall mounted and needed to get the project done now rather than wait longer for LED's to come down in price.

While expensive, they do put out lots of light evenly over a wide area, reducing the need for higher wattage halogen or standard lighting, and reduce the need for more lighting fixtures to illuminate a wide area.
