The Poly Tac 90 really delivers.

Its compact size fits well on my Turnout coat, and its light weight.

Best of all it produces more light than any light I have carried in 37 years as a Fireman. 5 stars, well done.

[Remark on Nov 27, 2011]

Amazon has combined the 2-D and 3-D cell versions of Maglite LED flashlights into one product page. The following review was original written for the 3-D cell version. See my other review if you are looking for the 2-D Cell version.

==== Original Review follows ====

This Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight features the second-generation LED technology by Maglite. You may be alarmed that many of the older Amazon reviews are highly critical about this product. However, please note that the 2nd-gen LED Maglite was not even available before May 2009. That means earlier reviews were all based on the inferior first-gen Maglite LED flashlight.

The 2nd-gen Maglite LED flashlight offers many improvements over the first-generation version:

1. Brighter LED:

The new Maglite uses a Luxeon 'Rebel ES' 3-Watt LED as light source (check my Customer Image to see how it looks like). This LED is significantly brighter, whiter and more energy-efficient than the previous 'Lux III' LED used in 1st-gen Maglite.

2. Improved Heat Sink:

The overheating problem found in 1st-gen LED modules has been solved. That is, the light no longer dims down after just a few minutes of operation.

3. Better Power Management:

The new Maglite maintains constant power consumption of 2W as long as battery voltage is above 3.5V. That means it produces the same brightness whether powered by 3x NiMH cells (3.75V), or 3x alkaline cells (4.5V). When battery voltage drops below 3.5V, the light dims down gradually to conserve power, instead of abruptly drops dead like in 1st-gen. (See my Customer Image for chart of Input Power vs. Battery Voltage)

4. Sharper Focusing:

The 'Spot' mode is now very tight, with hardly any spill over. The 'Wide' mode is more even, without an ugly black hole in the middle. (See my Customer Image for beam shots)

Some other observations:

Light output of this Maglite 3-D LED flashlight is rated at '104-lumen'. I have no reason to doubt this number, because it is significantly brighter than the Maglite 2-AA mini LED, which is rated at 69-lumen. This claim is also consistent with the spec sheet of Luxeon Rebel ES LED, with the input power at 2W.

The battery life is rated at '72-hour'. This number seems a bit optimistic to me. Based on energy calculation, a set of three alkaline D-cells should be able to power the light at full power (2W) for about 20 hours. After that, the light will start to dim down gradually over the course of next 30-40 hours.

The only 'shortcoming' of this 3xD-cell Maglite is its size and weight. It is true that you can find other LED flashlights that also advertise '100-lumen', but powered by just 2xAA or even 3xAAA cells. However, the total energy stored in each D-size alkaline cell is about 7x greater than that in one AA cell. So by using three D-cells instead of two AA cells, this Maglite is able to burn at full brightness for 10 times longer. Most other LED flashlights only provide full brightness initially, when batteries are fresh. Physics don't lie. Marketing people do.

Bottom line:

Don't be discouraged by outdated negative reviews! This 2nd-gen Maglite LED flashlight is a very capable, rugged workhorse. Of course, if you need a more compact unit, then consider the MAGLITE 2-AA Cell Mini-Maglite LED Flashlight instead. It offers the 2nd-gen LED technology, too.

[Update on Feb 23, 2011]

I did a comparison between this 3-D Maglite and its 2-D cousin (ST2D096), and found them to be identical in terms of brightness and beam shape. The only difference is in runtime (about 20 hours for 3-D, 12 hours for 2-D). So just pick one depending on your preference in size.

[Update on Oct 26, 2011]

A reader informed me that the latest 3-D Maglite is using 3rd-generation LED, possibly Cree XP-E. I just confirmed this at my local Costco. The new package says '131 lumens' (previous one says '104 lumens'), and the LED inside has a square green base (previous one has a rectangular white base).

****REFER TO THE CUSTOMER IMAGE I UPLOADED****

The 3-D LED Maglite is indeed an improvement from the traditional krypton Maglites that were used by police in the past. Nowadays police prefer xenon or LED models, especially the Streamlight Stinger or Pelican 7060, especially after allegations that these lights were being used with excessive force.

However, the LED Maglite left much to wish for, especially when compared to other LED lights.

PROs:

*Much brighter than the krypton Maglites

*Has spare krypton bulb in the tailcap should you ever manage to break the LED module, something that rarely happens.

*The focus ability of this light allow you to decide whether you want to use a lot of "sidespill" to light up the room, or to focus all the light into a tight beam to get a lot of "throw." Unfortunately the "throw" only allows you to see things up to 2-3 blocks away.

*Solid construction, the flashlight looks nice in any color, and it is a good self-defense tool. You can either blind an aggressor and if that is not enough it is a nice impact weapon. You do not need the 4 cell, or 6 cell Maglite to defend yourself, a 6 inch light will do if you know how to use it.

*Runs on 3 D cells, which are relatively cheap, and easy to find as opposed to CR123A's. The big batteries do add to the weight and strength of the light if you ever need to use it as an impact weapon.

*You can purchase a separate "Bust A Cap" device to attach to the tailcap of the flashlight. This little device will allow you to break car windows in case you need to get yourself or anyone else out of a vehicle during an emergency. Without the device, you will struggle to break the window, and you might damage your flashlight.

*The LED drains batteries slower than incandescent models.

*The 3-D Cell Maglite IS the BEST of all the other Maglites (2-D cell, 4-D cell, 6-D cells, etc) because it is the brightest and lasts the longest time on a fresh set of batteries.

*Momentary on, or constant on click-switch on the neck of the light. Some folks might prefer a "tactical switch" on the tailcap of their light, so if this is an issue, this light is not for you.

Now that I reviewed the PROs you might be wondering why I only gave it 3 stars. Here is the why: I expected more out of this light now than it has been promoted to LED status, especially since it is a Maglite. However, it failed in the following areas:

*POOR REFLECTOR. Maglite allows us to focus our light by rotating the head, but in doing so, it sacrifices the smooth beam that characterizes other LED flashlights. As a result you are left with "dark spots" and a "black hole" in the middle of the beam. These areas of darkness prevent you from seeing thins you need to see in the dark.

*The LED itself is not as bright as you would expect. I've seen many more LED lights, and my cheap Dorcy 3AAA 80 lumen light valued at $17 is WAY brighter. I am being fair in using a Dorcy within the same price range, you can't say I'm comparing the Maglite to a Surefire or Pelican.

*The LED has a "purplish" tint to it. Other LEDs offer a very white light. Others emit a somewhat bluish tint. This one emits a purple tint, and although it is bright, the weird tint is somewhat disturbing.

*The flashlight DOES get a bit dimmer as the batteries die down. Then it suddenly dies on you. This means if you intend on using this light for emergency preparedness, you better have fresh batteries so you won't be left with a dead light.

It's good that Maglite finally realized that LED is the future of flashlights, but they still have a lot to improve so that their products are high quality. The problem is not with the body of the light, all they need to fix is the reflector and the LED module. Police departments throughout the nation have seen these weaknesses in Maglite flashlights, so they have switched to Streamlight, Pelican, Inova, and Surefire. In order for Maglite to keep up, they need to work on their small blemishes.

The only exception is the AA LED Maglite, which is perhaps the best light they've made. The LED is smooth, with no dark rings around it.

After doing exhaustive research on the web for LED flashlights, I decided to give this one a try. I have owned other LED flashlights and have NOT always been happy with these products. Some reasons why I like this one more than the others include: 1) price, 2) quality, 3) adjustability of the beam (small bright dense center or wider softer light), 4) includes an extra bulb in the base just in case the first one breaks, 5) you can purchase other types of bulbs, like Xenon, separately if you need them, 5) has good battery life (some lose brightness intensity very fast after a few minute of continuous use. Other LED flashlights have smaller multiple light bulbs and you can't adjust the beam intensity as you sometimes need to do on search and rescue missions. Of the 4 LED flashlights I own, this one is my favorite. It works great in a power outage, for hiking/backpacking (only when using out of the car, a little too heavy for a few night loop), and for search a rescue missions. For the price and quality you can't beat this powerhouse flashlight.

I bought 2 and use one for a polyanna gift exchange we do a Christmas with my husband's family this one was stolen the maximum number of times per our rules (3 times) early on in the game.

Honest reviews on MagLite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black

Maglite has been known for decades for a quality powerful light with a terrific warranty. Unfortunately their attempt at quality LED lighting is far from terrific. The LED lights if left on for more than 5 minutes sees a significant decrease in the brightness of the light. This is due to a failure to provide a proper heat sink for the LED light. The longer the light stays on the dimmer and dimmer it grows. To say the least this is really disappointing. Improper heat removal from the LED will significantly reduce the life of the bulb as well.

Second, the power derived from the 3D batteries is not properly circuited or managed to provide a powerful beam that you would expect from the power that it is given. The biggest disappointment to prove this came when I recently ordered a Fenix key chain light that ran on 1 AAA battery. To say the least the light was as bright as my Maglite. After 5 minutes of operation the AAA Fenix light was brighter than the 3D Maglite because of the missing heat sink to effectively dissipate heat. Really disappointing.

Third, the adjustable focus is worthless as the light only provides quality lighting when completely focused for the greatest throw of the light, which due to its poor power management does not give the 3D batteries justice. The light is completely unusable in the flood focus as a big black dark spot appears in the middle of the projection. The light to say the least needs a better focusing system. Not to mention that the reflector is made of plastic. Aluminum would be far better and could provide a nice heat sink.

After about 6 months of light use my Maglite switch failed. This was after Hurricane Ike moved through my area and we were without power for 10 days. To say the least this was disappointing because of the quality that Maglite has been known for. I contacted Maglite via the internet as soon as my power was restored explaining my problem and they immediately sent out a replacement part, instructions, and tools necessary to change out the switch. I received the part within 10 days. It was an easy install and the correspondence was hassle free. In a time when corporations try to get out of warranties or force you to go through a long drawn out process it was refreshing to see Maglite honor their warranty with no hassle.

The durability of the light is not in question. It is made from quality components and should offer a long life of use.

Summary: The attempt at LED technology by Maglite is quite poor. The light is durable and Maglite does keep there word on their warranty. Still I do not recommend this light because inefficient power management, inadequate heat sinking, and poor focusing mechanism are all big problems with this light.

This is the same high quality Mag Lite that has been around for so long, but with a 3 watt led to replace the incandescent bulb.

One would expect a bright white or bluish led light, but a pleasant surprise is that Mag selected slightly yellow LEDs and so there is not an overly blue beam.

The beam throws well, and is a bit brighter than the incandescent.

The battery run time is 5 times as long than before, and while the incandescent gets to half brightness in 90 minutes, it takes 6 hours to 50 percent brightness with this flashlight, with the remainder of the life about 20 hours with usable brightness.

The led is rated at 50,000 hours of life.

Recently my 3 D Mag Lite slipped and fell on concrete head first, with no noticeable damage.

This light is still focusable as before, via turning the head which contains the usual parabolic reflector.

The 4 D Mag Lite seems a bit large and clumsy, but this 3 D is just right. And I have noticed, quite by accident, that no one seems to argue with me when I am holding this particular size light.

To sum up, much longer batter life, brighter, durable, high Mag quality.

A great light.

Please make sure you read the small print. I ordered this along with several other items for camping equipment. What I didn't realize was this item is shipping from China. While not that big of a deal if you want it or expect it to come quickly or in a normal amount of time for an item this size it's coming from China.

Not the sellers fault they clearly state that in the description, I just failed to notice that little tid bit.

It isn't indicated anywhere in the Amazon description, but the package states that there is 495 lumens of brightness. Hope this helps.

UPDATE: There was 1 order of 4 bulbs and 1 order of 2 bulbs. I installed 6 of these in my kitchen ceiling cans in March of 2013.

There was a little color difference between lots but overall I was happy as the brightness was very good.

After 4 months one of the TCP bulbs went out I suspect the electronics in the base went bad. I will keep you updated if any others die.

Saw some mixed reviews on these, but decided to purchase anyway.

Main concerns were warm up time to full brightness and color temperature.

These lights take a minute or two to reach full brightness, and give off a nice warm tungsten like light at 2700K.

I'm very happy. I use them as a hall light that I switch off and on, and I was worried the initial brightness would suck.

It really is just fine for me, and I would rather save the money on my electricity bill than wait a minute for full brightness.

This is the first time we have tried CFL floods. We got them to use in a directional type fixture to throw light were we need it. They work just fine but they do have the time lag before they reach full brightness-less than a minute, not a problem.

As all lights of this type, they are slow to warm up but these seem to warm quicker than your older models. With a 7 year warranty (save your receipt and put a copy in the bulb package) these will save you money and give you a pleasant light.

I purchased this item because another reviewer said it worked in his Dewalt work light. I own 2 Porter Cable worklights that also use the Dewalt bulb. Yes it does drop right in. Yes it does work. However be aware that it gives light from a more blue spectrum and doesn't seem quite as bright as the Dewalt bulb. At less than half the money I can't complain. It's nice to have both my lights working again, even if one seems slightly less brite. I should also add that the seller was very fast getting it to me. It was well packed. I will be ordering a couple more to have on hand.

Vendor (Econotone Inc) performed flawlessly; product quality of the bulbs (I ordered two) is great and both work well. But, the light is waaaay too harsh for me. These are a color temp of 4100K, nice and bright but harsh.

I've used the Princeton Tec Aurora (3 leds on 3 AAA batteries) for several years for camping, house wiring, running in the dark. It accidentally went through the wash last month so I took it apart, dried it out, and it works fine!

I needed a brighter headlamp for running so I tried the Apex. I've been using the included alkaline batteries mostly on the low, 3W led setting for two weeks (~4 hours total). The battery indicator is still green!. It fits comfortably and securely and I got used to the weight of it quickly.

This headlamp has a lifetime warranty, excellent documentation, and is brighter than I thought it would be. Oncoming vehicles actually switch off their high-beams and cross to the opposite lane when they encounter my bright light and that makes me feel safer.

this is my first pro level headlamp.

I am currently using it for night time trail running. for that setting I am using the high setting 3 watt led. that lasts just under two hours on two AA batts. for running fire roads I use the high setting on the small LEDs and it works fine.

its only been used in dry weather thus far, so I cant comment on its waterproof qualities. the battery compartment seems to have a solid seal at the o-ring.

this is very well constructed and though it aint light, its comfortable to wear for a 1 1/2 hour run over a skull cap.

this is money well spent compared to the crap previously owned and discarded after failure. a thoughtful design and quality build.

the spot is bright enough that I might take it along on night bike rides as a backup if my main helmet light fails.

you wont bomb any trails with it but it will get you home at a decent pace.

fini

addendum: after more than two years of use with three separate lights I have additional commentary. there is a design weakness with these lights, namely the hinge/plastic heat sink surround is prone to breakage if you should drop or knock the light head against anything. if it was just a tad beefier it would probably be OK, but dont handle this light after you just finished catching a greased pig, or insert your own lubricated-hands analogy...

I will note that the first time I broke this hinge Princeton Tec sent me a brand new light free of charge, so I still love them. now I have three to send back and will be curious what they will charge for repairs

Best Deals for Princeton Tec Apex LED Headlamp

This is by far the best head lamp on the market. I'm a caver and most lights aren't bright enough, cost too much, or fall apart easily. The many modes of this light make caving so much safer. If I'm in a very large walking passage I'll switch this light to the high output middle LED. If I need to have more light directly in front of me (at my feet and 15-20 feet out) I'll switch the light to the outer four LEDs. Also, each LED has a dim mode. This is perfect for mapping or conserving battery life. The battery life is better on this light than any other consumer head lamp that I've tried. Almost everyone that I cave with has switched to this head lamp after they've caved with me a few times. The voltage regulator works very well on this lamp.

Honest reviews on Princeton Tec Apex LED Headlamp

Product worked excellently. It came with batteries and has two modes which both work beautifully. The LEDs are surprisingly bright and I am pleased with the product.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Princeton Tec Apex LED Headlamp

I've had this a couple of years now, and overall am quite impressed.

There are four brightness settings, and the brightest one compares quite favorably to a good-quality four-cell flashlight. The least bright setting plenty good enough for walking on a dark trail on a moonless night, and will give (I'm guessing, now) about 20 hours on four AA batteries.

When you are in a low voltage situation, the light flashes four times to let you know, but you don't have to put in new batteries when the voltage drops below the regulated level. Instead, you can just use the light until it gets dimmer than you are comfortable with. Doing this will more than double your battery life, at the expense of brightness, of course.

This is an expensive light, but it probably the best one out there. You can experiment with a lot of cheap ones, or save money by buying the best in the first place.

It kind of shows my age; but the last time I bought a timer for a 3-way switch, I had to get one of those with a rotary knob which don't look very attractive. That was the only way to have the dimming level stay set when turn the light on and off from different locations. Now I am remodeling and using decorative switches and this matches all the other switches and dims the lights the way I want.

We have a bunch of these around the house, after a recent remodel. While they're attractive and generally innocuous, they routinely burn out at the same time as whatever light they're connected to. Apparently the voltage spike that sometimes accompanies the "flash" of a light burning out fries the dimmer's electronics. So instead of replacing a $1 screw in bulb, I get to replace the $30 dimmer, with all the fun that entails (circuit breaker, wired connections, etc.). The one in our kitchen just burned out for about the 5th time.

I saw this lamp online and fell in love with it. I had seen it at another site for about 60 dollars more, so was very pleased to see it on Amazon for a discount. I was a little concerned about previous reviews saying it was shipped without the base, but figured it was worth a shot. I'm glad I did because it arrived intact!

The lamp was shipped in its original packaging, which seems a little too weak. The base had clearly started tearing out of the packaging, but the shipper was smart enough to wrap the whole box in plastic, securing the bottom.

The lamp was a cinch to put together (three screws) and is easily the most sturdy floor lamp I've owned. Cheaper items have had leaning issues but the heavy base and metal body all fit together seamlessly.

I also like the simple floor switch which keeps you from fumbling under the shade for a tiny switch.

So I had been on the hunt for some "wedding-like" string lights for my backyard but found out that what i'd really love to have (the vintage wedding string lights) just cost way too much for simply 25 bulbs. I found out through a guy at Home Depot that LED works longer and costs much less to buy and run when turned on for hours. LED bulbs are cool to the touch, so you won't deal with HOT bulbs. I had actually puchased this exact brand at Target in the "soft white" color and was pleasantly surprised as to how affordable they are $14.99 a box of 40 bulbs on 20 feet of cord and how far 20 feet can really go. What i really liked was that i could string up to 87 sets of these LED lights together! I am trying to mimic the wedding light look and eventually want to add several tows of these string lights and insert Chinese paper lanterns to every other bulb.

When these are lit, you can't tell that they are plastic, nor can you see the tiny parts where they are held together. They just look like string lights! They are also water-proof and are for indoor / outdoor. LEDs also last longer and costs less.

A typical 40 bulb set of string lights would take 175 watts to run....well these Philips G40 LEDS take only 2.4 watts to run! and of course they won't get hot, risking burning your cheap paper lanterns.

I personally got the warm white color cause i can have the basic white light but then once i insert any color paper lantern, i'll get that lanter's color to glow up the room and i can change out the paper lanterns to reflect another color for another type of party. So just buying the white light allows you to just do more by changing the color of the paper lanterns.

I buy my paper lanterns very cheap from OrientalTrading.com but you can also find them at Big Lots, Target, Walmart, IKEA, Garden Ridge Pottery or somewhere online for just like $1.50-$300 each

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Summary: bright "taplight" with easy mounting but only for temporary / short usage

This is a nicely made light with a decent power button (it has a little more travel than I would like. A lighter touch would be nice)

The light is 3-7/8 inches in diameter much larger than other tap lights so I was disappointed that it didn't take AA's which have about 3x the run time of AAA's (2900 mAH vs ~1000 for AAA's) That said the light slides onto a self adhesive mounting base which makes battery changes much easier.

The beam is nice, even, and quite wide. I measured a 22" circle from a distance of 15" which means that the angle is about 75 degrees. It's also bright enough to be a (dim)under counter light. Unfortunately, I used a DVM and measured the draw to be 80 mA this means a fresh set of batteries is good for ~12 hours. A set of rechargables (~750 mAh) would be good for perhaps 9 hours.

I may try to convert this with a AC adapter so I can use it for an undercounter light it's that bright.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Fulcrum LED tap light is an evolution of the "wire-free light for anywhere" idea. It's 9 LEDs is the most I've seen in this type of product--most offer 3 or 5. It offers both 2 sided tape and screws as means to affix it to a surface. The tap feature works without much pressure making it easy to turn on even if not pressing it directly. Just be careful to not look at the light when turning it on because those LEDs are bright! Especially if you are in a dark space, you'll be blinded for a several moments. The LEDs shine with a cold brilliance, so don't expect warm, cozy illumination from this unit. The cone of light is not overly wide, but perfectly adequate for most applications.

The double sided tape is quite sticky, and will probably be what most folks use. Some surfaces might not play nice with the adhesive though, and the screws then offer a more permanent and sturdy solution. You need to be a little handy for this option though, and popping the light off a screwed-in base to change the batteries requires lining it up just in the right spot. Tricky. In an unscientific test, I put 3 full rechargeable AAA batteries in and left the light on. After approximately 72 hours of constant use, I came home to find the LEDs still shining but very dim. Your results may vary.

While a decent product, there some areas where it could have been more thoughtfully designed:

* The heavy-duty blister packaging made for difficult, even dangerous, product removal.

* The housing feels flimsy but has held up well so far. It doesn't inspire confidence in the tap light's long-term durability though.

* I actually had to read the instructions to figure out how to get to the battery compartment. It wasn't that hard after I figured it out, but it was challenging the first time. I don't look forward to doing this every time the batteries die, especially if the unit were screwed onto a surface (see earlier).

* Once you've stuck it somewhere, it is there to stay. Velcro instead of 2-sided tape might have been a better option. Make sure you get where you want, because you can't pivot the beam, a feature available in some other tap/puck light models.

* There is no dimming mode, just on or off.

* No light or motion sensor.

* It is pricier than many comparable tap lights.

The 30015-301 from Fulcrum is a bright, easy-to-use tap light for those areas that need illumination and wiring is not a good option. Make sure it is the best fit for your needs though. I also have a set of Rite Lites and though not as bright, find them more versatile, attractive and a better value overall. I may just keep my Fulcrum model loose and use it when I travel, or as a back-up in my car.

EDIT (01/04/2012): The double sided tape does not last forever. After several months hanging under a shelf, the Fulcrum did indeed fall off.

Best Deals for Fulcrum 30015-308 9 LED Tap Light

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program For a tap light (i.e., a small portable light source that you can "tap" on), this this is darned bright. It's energy efficient and portable, and is a good solution if you need an occasional light someplace you don't have electricity.

I'm keeping this in my power failure kit -it will light a room about as bright as a candle (and much brighter within the cone of light that it projects), and it's safer than a candle.

The light isn't beautiful or blinding, but it's fine. The color is a kind of blueish white. Looking straight at the light while holding it is uncomfortable, and at that distance, it looks about as bright as a 100 watt bulb to my (untrained) eye. It uses LEDs instead of an incandescent or florescent bulb, so you don't need to replace bulbs, and you'll get more battery life than you would with a different technology. (3 AAA batteries). It attaches to a base disk, which you can then attach to a wall with the included double-sided tape or a screw.

All in all, a good solution for someplace you can't run a wire to, especially at this price.

Honest reviews on Fulcrum 30015-308 9 LED Tap Light

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Fulcrum Tap Light is lightweight, easy to operate with its large central on/off button, and gives out a goodly amount of useful light. It's not enough to read by, but it's enough to light small, dark spaces such as pantries, storerooms, corners or sides of garages, and so on. Quite surprisingly, it has a usage unanticipated by the makers: it's a really good portable emergency light. It can be kept or mounted in a windowless bathroom for use during a power outage. It can also be hand-held and used as a wide-beam flashlight (although read below about the one major defect).

It's powered by three AAA batteries, and the batteries are easy enough to install. There's a mounting plate that can be affixed to just about any surface with the included adhesive strips, or more permanently mounted to a wood or wallboard surface with the supplied small screws. The unit is lightweight and doesn't require much mechanical support to stay where you want it to stay.

I can't exactly say as to battery life, but this design of light should have pretty good battery life. A slightly deceptive package label says "100,000 hours" but that's the life of the bulbs. I'm guessing the batteries will last more like 100 hours, but I haven't fully discharged my first set as yet.

That one flaw? The unit twists off the base to be removed and thus expose the battery compartment, then twists back on again. The problem is that the twist-on mechanism doesn't lock, and if you knock into the unit, it can pop open and spill out the batteries. That would be most annoying in a dark area or during a power outage, and it's much more easily done than it should be. So if you buy this unit, be careful of this problem.

Do I recommend this light? Yes, up to a point. It is a good light and is very versatile, but unfortunately I'd have to classify it as not completely reliable due to the ease with which the batteries can be knocked out.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program So this is a tap light (though you tap the button in the middle, not the entire lower shell like some tap lights.) And it does pretty much exactly what you'd expect: light up a small area. Plus, it's LED so the bulbs will never burn out for all intents and purposes.

Placed in the master bedroom of my house, this can light up the entire room enough to SEE by, but not enough to read by for any period of time. For that, a few of these lights placed strategically around the house would be a great idea for those that experience power failures regularly. Placed on the bedside, wall behind the bed, or headboard, this produces enough light to read by, though you're not really going to get much ambient light and you'll get eye-strain long before tiring of reading...for simple "can't sleep, read a boring book for a while" scenarios, that's good...but this is not a reading light (or does it claim to be.)

I also found that in various cupboards, as long as its positioned correctly, the "wide angle" beam is bright enough to illuminate the far recesses... So at this point, having not "mounted" (permanently taped, which is why it's 4 stars, not 5) this light anywhere, I have plenty of possibilities.

Overall, a good tap light. Would recommend.
