[Remark on Nov 27, 2011]

Amazon has combined the 2-D and 3-D cell versions of Maglite LED flashlights into one product page. The following review was original written for the 3-D cell version. See my other review if you are looking for the 2-D Cell version.

==== Original Review follows ====

This Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight features the second-generation LED technology by Maglite. You may be alarmed that many of the older Amazon reviews are highly critical about this product. However, please note that the 2nd-gen LED Maglite was not even available before May 2009. That means earlier reviews were all based on the inferior first-gen Maglite LED flashlight.

The 2nd-gen Maglite LED flashlight offers many improvements over the first-generation version:

1. Brighter LED:

The new Maglite uses a Luxeon 'Rebel ES' 3-Watt LED as light source (check my Customer Image to see how it looks like). This LED is significantly brighter, whiter and more energy-efficient than the previous 'Lux III' LED used in 1st-gen Maglite.

2. Improved Heat Sink:

The overheating problem found in 1st-gen LED modules has been solved. That is, the light no longer dims down after just a few minutes of operation.

3. Better Power Management:

The new Maglite maintains constant power consumption of 2W as long as battery voltage is above 3.5V. That means it produces the same brightness whether powered by 3x NiMH cells (3.75V), or 3x alkaline cells (4.5V). When battery voltage drops below 3.5V, the light dims down gradually to conserve power, instead of abruptly drops dead like in 1st-gen. (See my Customer Image for chart of Input Power vs. Battery Voltage)

4. Sharper Focusing:

The 'Spot' mode is now very tight, with hardly any spill over. The 'Wide' mode is more even, without an ugly black hole in the middle. (See my Customer Image for beam shots)

Some other observations:

Light output of this Maglite 3-D LED flashlight is rated at '104-lumen'. I have no reason to doubt this number, because it is significantly brighter than the Maglite 2-AA mini LED, which is rated at 69-lumen. This claim is also consistent with the spec sheet of Luxeon Rebel ES LED, with the input power at 2W.

The battery life is rated at '72-hour'. This number seems a bit optimistic to me. Based on energy calculation, a set of three alkaline D-cells should be able to power the light at full power (2W) for about 20 hours. After that, the light will start to dim down gradually over the course of next 30-40 hours.

The only 'shortcoming' of this 3xD-cell Maglite is its size and weight. It is true that you can find other LED flashlights that also advertise '100-lumen', but powered by just 2xAA or even 3xAAA cells. However, the total energy stored in each D-size alkaline cell is about 7x greater than that in one AA cell. So by using three D-cells instead of two AA cells, this Maglite is able to burn at full brightness for 10 times longer. Most other LED flashlights only provide full brightness initially, when batteries are fresh. Physics don't lie. Marketing people do.

Bottom line:

Don't be discouraged by outdated negative reviews! This 2nd-gen Maglite LED flashlight is a very capable, rugged workhorse. Of course, if you need a more compact unit, then consider the MAGLITE 2-AA Cell Mini-Maglite LED Flashlight instead. It offers the 2nd-gen LED technology, too.

[Update on Feb 23, 2011]

I did a comparison between this 3-D Maglite and its 2-D cousin (ST2D096), and found them to be identical in terms of brightness and beam shape. The only difference is in runtime (about 20 hours for 3-D, 12 hours for 2-D). So just pick one depending on your preference in size.

[Update on Oct 26, 2011]

A reader informed me that the latest 3-D Maglite is using 3rd-generation LED, possibly Cree XP-E. I just confirmed this at my local Costco. The new package says '131 lumens' (previous one says '104 lumens'), and the LED inside has a square green base (previous one has a rectangular white base).

The 3-D LED Maglite is indeed an improvement from the traditional krypton Maglites that were used by police in the past. Nowadays police prefer xenon or LED models, especially the Streamlight Stinger or Pelican 7060, especially after allegations that these lights were being used with excessive force.

However, the LED Maglite left much to wish for, especially when compared to other LED lights.

PROs:

*Much brighter than the krypton Maglites

*Has spare krypton bulb in the tailcap should you ever manage to break the LED module, something that rarely happens.

*The focus ability of this light allow you to decide whether you want to use a lot of "sidespill" to light up the room, or to focus all the light into a tight beam to get a lot of "throw." Unfortunately the "throw" only allows you to see things up to 2-3 blocks away.

*Solid construction, the flashlight looks nice in any color, and it is a good self-defense tool. You can either blind an aggressor and if that is not enough it is a nice impact weapon. You do not need the 4 cell, or 6 cell Maglite to defend yourself, a 6 inch light will do if you know how to use it.

*Runs on 3 D cells, which are relatively cheap, and easy to find as opposed to CR123A's. The big batteries do add to the weight and strength of the light if you ever need to use it as an impact weapon.

*You can purchase a separate "Bust A Cap" device to attach to the tailcap of the flashlight. This little device will allow you to break car windows in case you need to get yourself or anyone else out of a vehicle during an emergency. Without the device, you will struggle to break the window, and you might damage your flashlight.

*The LED drains batteries slower than incandescent models.

*The 3-D Cell Maglite IS the BEST of all the other Maglites (2-D cell, 4-D cell, 6-D cells, etc) because it is the brightest and lasts the longest time on a fresh set of batteries.

*Momentary on, or constant on click-switch on the neck of the light. Some folks might prefer a "tactical switch" on the tailcap of their light, so if this is an issue, this light is not for you.

Now that I reviewed the PROs you might be wondering why I only gave it 3 stars. Here is the why: I expected more out of this light now than it has been promoted to LED status, especially since it is a Maglite. However, it failed in the following areas:

*POOR REFLECTOR. Maglite allows us to focus our light by rotating the head, but in doing so, it sacrifices the smooth beam that characterizes other LED flashlights. As a result you are left with "dark spots" and a "black hole" in the middle of the beam. These areas of darkness prevent you from seeing thins you need to see in the dark.

*The LED itself is not as bright as you would expect. I've seen many more LED lights, and my cheap Dorcy 3AAA 80 lumen light valued at $17 is WAY brighter. I am being fair in using a Dorcy within the same price range, you can't say I'm comparing the Maglite to a Surefire or Pelican.

*The LED has a "purplish" tint to it. Other LEDs offer a very white light. Others emit a somewhat bluish tint. This one emits a purple tint, and although it is bright, the weird tint is somewhat disturbing.

*The flashlight DOES get a bit dimmer as the batteries die down. Then it suddenly dies on you. This means if you intend on using this light for emergency preparedness, you better have fresh batteries so you won't be left with a dead light.

It's good that Maglite finally realized that LED is the future of flashlights, but they still have a lot to improve so that their products are high quality. The problem is not with the body of the light, all they need to fix is the reflector and the LED module. Police departments throughout the nation have seen these weaknesses in Maglite flashlights, so they have switched to Streamlight, Pelican, Inova, and Surefire. In order for Maglite to keep up, they need to work on their small blemishes.

The only exception is the AA LED Maglite, which is perhaps the best light they've made. The LED is smooth, with no dark rings around it.

After doing exhaustive research on the web for LED flashlights, I decided to give this one a try. I have owned other LED flashlights and have NOT always been happy with these products. Some reasons why I like this one more than the others include: 1) price, 2) quality, 3) adjustability of the beam (small bright dense center or wider softer light), 4) includes an extra bulb in the base just in case the first one breaks, 5) you can purchase other types of bulbs, like Xenon, separately if you need them, 5) has good battery life (some lose brightness intensity very fast after a few minute of continuous use. Other LED flashlights have smaller multiple light bulbs and you can't adjust the beam intensity as you sometimes need to do on search and rescue missions. Of the 4 LED flashlights I own, this one is my favorite. It works great in a power outage, for hiking/backpacking (only when using out of the car, a little too heavy for a few night loop), and for search a rescue missions. For the price and quality you can't beat this powerhouse flashlight.

I bought 2 and use one for a polyanna gift exchange we do a Christmas with my husband's family this one was stolen the maximum number of times per our rules (3 times) early on in the game.

Honest reviews on MagLite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black

Maglite has been known for decades for a quality powerful light with a terrific warranty. Unfortunately their attempt at quality LED lighting is far from terrific. The LED lights if left on for more than 5 minutes sees a significant decrease in the brightness of the light. This is due to a failure to provide a proper heat sink for the LED light. The longer the light stays on the dimmer and dimmer it grows. To say the least this is really disappointing. Improper heat removal from the LED will significantly reduce the life of the bulb as well.

Second, the power derived from the 3D batteries is not properly circuited or managed to provide a powerful beam that you would expect from the power that it is given. The biggest disappointment to prove this came when I recently ordered a Fenix key chain light that ran on 1 AAA battery. To say the least the light was as bright as my Maglite. After 5 minutes of operation the AAA Fenix light was brighter than the 3D Maglite because of the missing heat sink to effectively dissipate heat. Really disappointing.

Third, the adjustable focus is worthless as the light only provides quality lighting when completely focused for the greatest throw of the light, which due to its poor power management does not give the 3D batteries justice. The light is completely unusable in the flood focus as a big black dark spot appears in the middle of the projection. The light to say the least needs a better focusing system. Not to mention that the reflector is made of plastic. Aluminum would be far better and could provide a nice heat sink.

After about 6 months of light use my Maglite switch failed. This was after Hurricane Ike moved through my area and we were without power for 10 days. To say the least this was disappointing because of the quality that Maglite has been known for. I contacted Maglite via the internet as soon as my power was restored explaining my problem and they immediately sent out a replacement part, instructions, and tools necessary to change out the switch. I received the part within 10 days. It was an easy install and the correspondence was hassle free. In a time when corporations try to get out of warranties or force you to go through a long drawn out process it was refreshing to see Maglite honor their warranty with no hassle.

The durability of the light is not in question. It is made from quality components and should offer a long life of use.

Summary: The attempt at LED technology by Maglite is quite poor. The light is durable and Maglite does keep there word on their warranty. Still I do not recommend this light because inefficient power management, inadequate heat sinking, and poor focusing mechanism are all big problems with this light.

This is the same high quality Mag Lite that has been around for so long, but with a 3 watt led to replace the incandescent bulb.

One would expect a bright white or bluish led light, but a pleasant surprise is that Mag selected slightly yellow LEDs and so there is not an overly blue beam.

The beam throws well, and is a bit brighter than the incandescent.

The battery run time is 5 times as long than before, and while the incandescent gets to half brightness in 90 minutes, it takes 6 hours to 50 percent brightness with this flashlight, with the remainder of the life about 20 hours with usable brightness.

The led is rated at 50,000 hours of life.

Recently my 3 D Mag Lite slipped and fell on concrete head first, with no noticeable damage.

This light is still focusable as before, via turning the head which contains the usual parabolic reflector.

The 4 D Mag Lite seems a bit large and clumsy, but this 3 D is just right. And I have noticed, quite by accident, that no one seems to argue with me when I am holding this particular size light.

To sum up, much longer batter life, brighter, durable, high Mag quality.

A great light.

I wanted a clip light in my car because I am always dropping things under the seat and things like that and wanted a bright light that I could always find. I leave this clipped to my rearview mirror tab and it has yet to fall off. The clip is well made, and the all black case blends in nicely. The LED lights are very bright and the battery lasts a good while. I had bought cheaper versions at the auto parts store, but the clips always broke. This one is great.

This thing is great for just under 12 bucks! No way is it worth the over 30$ retail! The light is quite bright and the clip is strong. I would definitely buy another as long as the price is the same!

Honest reviews on Rampage 501001 LED Clip On Light

Cheap. Switch does not work and the light is so dim it serves no purpose. Furthermore it is very fragile plus magnet is not strong enough to hold it's own weight. Do not waste your money on this junk.

I paid $12.71 for this light. It is worth about $1.27. It is small and made of all plastic. You have to disassemble the case to replace the batteries. The ball joint about which the light pivots is so loose it would NOT hold the light in place. Seriously look elsewhere.

I love these. Bought 5 to add to four my wife had bought previously elsewhere. I put the first four in the ground, but these I use as tabletop lights on my patio. They're awesome. The vendor also is awesome. I received one that was cracked, but I just "let it slide" without contacting the vendor. I mentioned it, though, in the feedback, and the vendor contacted me and sent me a replacement. They handled the situation very professionally and promptly. Great lights, and a great vendor.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Wow, what a disappointment this little night owl is. The concept is so cute -the little guy sits on his nest, glows three different colors, and can be taken off his nest to cuddle or go sit next to the bed.

BUT the design is just flawed in some silly, thoughtless ways.

Ok first: the packaging tries to sell the fact that this guy is *not* rechargable as a benefit ("No rechargable battery to run down!") which is totally hooey. If something sits on a base that looks like a charger, you should NOT have to put three (*THREE!!*) double-A batteries into it.

Second: the controls are all via ONE button... a button that doesn't work if the batteries have run down. In other words, if the battery dies, you can't change the light color or set the wake-up time. Fail.

Third: let's talk about the green light "OK to Wake!" feature. You can't actually set the time. Instead, at the time of day that you want to set (say, 7am) you hold the button down for 5 seconds to set. This is totally non-intuitive and odd.

Fourth: When you take the owl off its nest base, the base has small orange lights that illuminate. The owl itself turns off after 30 minutes off the base, but the base itself seems to stay illuminated. FAIL. This means that my son's room is always basked in this creepy orange glow. Near as I can tell, the only way to turn the base off is to unplug it completely.

Look: I realize this is a plastic owl nightlight and I should probably save my outrage for something more important, but I was super excited about this little guy, and he's left me hooting sadly over poor design.

This is such a clever concept, so it's a shame that the technology behind it isn't a little more sophisticated. I was disappointed that the first time I used the lamp, I had to set it in "real-time" (i.e. run into my son's room at 6 am to set this as the "go time.") The other major lack in functionality is that the green light only stays on for 30 minutes, so on the rare occasion that my son does sleep past 6:30, he lays in bed waiting for his owl to turn green. That said, he seems to get the concept and has fun switching his owl from red to blue to yellow. It's very cute and clever but would benefit from more flexible timer features.

Best Deals for Onaroo Night Owl Portable Night-Light with OK to Wake!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program really cute and larger than i expected. It is well made and feels like it will last. I just wish it had a rechargable battery that would give me the option to have it stay on longer than 30 min. when off the base. When my 5 yrold brings it to bed with his book, the lite turns off too soon, but it has to to save batteries. As it is i expect to run thru batteries. But the timer green light is a great help, especially on week ends. Its much easier for him to understand when its ok to wake me for breakfast. It says its for 3 yrs and up, but i dont know why you couldnt use it on a dresser as a night light for babies. I think its just not made for the crib. Its a cute night light and would make a nice gift. Im glad i got it.

Honest reviews on Onaroo Night Owl Portable Night-Light with OK to Wake!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This owl is a good idea in theory, but there are other products that do the same thing, only better. The first issue I have is that if it isn't sitting on the base it completely eats through batteries. I wish that it were rechargeable (I'm using rechargeable batteries, but they don't last long at all). We have a MOBI Tykelight GloMate that recharges on it's base and lasts a long time between charging.

My second problem with this product is that there is one button. It makes using it too hard for adults and too easy for kids to goof up. What kid isn't going to find all kinds of ways to press buttons. So effectively, it's NEVER set to wake up at the right time. Add to that the fact that I can't set it ahead of time, really. You have to set it at the time you want it to go off. We also bought a Kid'Sleep Classic, Blue and it is much easier to set and works much better. Of course, kids can't take that off and snuggle it (though who wants to snuggle a plastic owl whose batteries always run out) and the light is much dimmer, but at least you can set it more effectively.

So now we mostly leave the owl on the charger and it is used like a night light. Pretty expensive for a night light, though.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My son is four and I've been having a lot of issues with him getting up in the middle of the night, thinking it is morning, and coming downstairs and watching television while waiting for everyone else to wake up. I was thrilled to try this product and it has worked perfectly. Setup was a breeze. I did have to be standing there at 6:45 am to set it the first time, but I got over that. The light it gives off isn't too much so it doesn't light up his whole room at night, but it is definitely enough to be used as a small nightlight. There is no question about when it turns green compared to the other colors. My only complaint is that it only stays green for 30 minutes and then goes back to the original color when it is time to get up. I'm a little concerned that if he sleeps in on the weekend that he'll think at 7:30 am that it is still time to be in his bed.

I bought 2 of these to replace 2 incandescent bulbs in ceiling fixtures with a dimmer switch. They dimmed as advertised, but both failed within three months. I returned both for a replacement. One replacement failed a couple of months later; the other failed within 4months. LEDS are sensitive to heat (that is why most have cooling fins), so the enclosed dome on the fixture could have contributed to the failure, but after 4 failures in less than 4 months of intermittent use, I do not recommend them for any application.

I have bought 9 of these now from a local hardware store that rhymes with toes. When I first bought them, they were $12.50. They are now down to $9.98 for the 40W, 3000K version.

Just bought another one today. The packaging has changed to a cardboard box with plastic endcaps at the top and bottom of the box. Much easier to open the package than the old sealed plastic packages!

These bulbs are easily 40W equivalent, with a pleasant warm light. They are perfect for ceiling fan bulb replacements. I also use them in my bathrooms and hallways. Note Utilitech also makes a 60W version, but I have been unwilling to pay the $25 they want for them.

Best Deals for LED 40 Watt Equivalent 7.5 Watt 450 Lumen A19 Dimmable Light Bulb

I have used Lights of America and Ebay LED lights with results you might expect if you believe the adage "you get what you pay for." What you pay for is a light that is dim and that fails within a couple of month, cheap crap from China and though I returned the Lights of America products for a refund to Costco with no hassles, God help the people that have to deal with the manufacturer from what I've read online (apparently their "warranty" is not honored).

In any case, I bought this light about 6 months ago at Lowes for $9.95 because it was relatively cheap, 40 watt equivalent, and had a two year warranty (I kept my receipt and recommend anyone who buys LED bulbs do so). It has been used nightly from 5pm until 8am the next morning. It gives nice even light and has been 100 percent reliable thus far. Therefore, I can recommend the quality and to this point the reliability of this bulb with frequent use.

Honest reviews on LED 40 Watt Equivalent 7.5 Watt 450 Lumen A19 Dimmable Light Bulb

I bought three of these Utilitech LED bulbs when one of the big home improvement stores put them on sale for a penny under $10. At that price, I figured they were worth a try. I don't mind the old incandescent bulbs they're cheap, but they do burn out pretty frequently. I don't like that compact florescent bulbs are full of hazardous mercury vapor, and I'm not totally clear on whether the CFL bulbs are really a fire hazard or if that's just an urban myth (I'm getting mixed information).

Getting them out of the packaging, a welded plastic tube-type deal, was difficult, and will make returning them very difficult.

I first replaced a 40 Watt incandescent bulb in a desk lamp. I don't have a light-meter or anything, but the LED bulb definately appears to be brighter than the 40 Watt bulb, although the light given off by the LED is more of a bluish shade.

Next I replaced the 60 Watt incandescent bulb in the main, timer-operated lamp in the living room. The LED bulb isn't quite putting out the same light as the 60 Watt bulb, but I don't notice it most of the time.

I will warn you that the light given off by the Utilitech bulb is mostly omnidirectional because of what looks like a heat-sink, the finned silver part. The LED bulb does get a little bit warm, but nothing like an incandescent bulb. Pretty certain that you couldn't cook anything in an Easy-bake oven with one of these.

If you are looking for a power-sipping LED, and you can live with the light output and that the bulb doesn't put out light in every direction, I would definately suggest one of these over a compact florescent bulb full of hazardous material, or an incandescent that's going to burn out after 6 to 8 months.

EDIT, 5/16/13:

All three still going strong. I've had to replace two incandescent bulbs, that don't get used very much, in the period where the LED bulbs have been lit over 5 hours every day. I don't miss the little bit of extra brightness of a 60 Watt incandescent bulb, I don't even notice anymore.

First off, I don't give "5-stars" except to truly exceptional products. This is a 5-star LED bulb, hands-down.

What it is: 7.5 watt LED light bulb with "standard" Edison base, very similar to your average 60W light incandescent light bulb in shape, size, and brightness. Maybe even brighter.

Color range: I purchased warm-white bulbs. The color and light produced is very similar to standard incandescent bulbs, not thin blue-white like many LEDs.

Coverage: these bulbs are about as close in distribution / coverage to an incandescent bulb as I've seen. They do not project in a "cone" shape as most LED bulbs do.

Brightness: My usual advice regarding "power saving bulbs" is that manufacturers overstate the brightness of their bulbs. This 7.5 watt bulb easily replaces 60W incandescent bulbs. For comparison, I use 7W Microbright CFLs in several fixtures in the house, they're a little less bright than 60W filament bulbs (maybe as bright as a 40W), take a little time to warm up, but generally do a great job of producing light. These LED bulbs are much more expensive, but for the same power, produce brighter light, are instant-on, and can be used with a dimmer. These bulbs are about the same size and shape as a conventional bulb, however the cooling fins may be a problem with lamps that rely on the shape of the bulb (lampshades that attach to the bulb).

I waited until [large chain hardware store] had these on sale for $10 each, about half-price. I bought one, tried it, and the next day went back for 4 more. I use these every day for my normal room lighting. Highly recommendable. Just think, you could run 9 of these for the same electrical cost as one 60-W light bulb.

I love this little light! I was hesitant to try it since I couldn't find any reviews about it, but I am very pleased with it's light output.

PROS:

*It's bright enough to read by. I compared it to another little USB light I bought on Amazon (the Ultra USB Notebook Light) which has only one bulb. That one give you a good little spotlight, but just in a focused spot, which might be good for lighting your keyboard. This light gives a good flood of light over the whole work area, and as I said, is strong enough to read by.

*The light is white and not blue like LEDs can be sometimes.

*I loved that you have the choice of powering it through the USB, or putting 3 AAA batteries in it to power it that way. I suspect you could also use a wall AC adapter, but I haven't tried that yet. I also don't yet know how long the batteries last.

CONS:

*The only problem with it is, even with batteries in it, it has a tendency to want to tip forward. To me that's not too big of a deal since I could readjust it's center of gravity (move the head around) and it would stop trying to tip. I suppose you could add a weight to the back to help this too.

Overall, I recommend this light if you want an inexpensive light that's pretty small, plugs into USB port, and has multiple uses thanks to the batteries so you can take it places (like camping).

I was surprised at the construction quality and brightness of the LEDs. But, as many reviews stated, the base is too light when you bend the gooseneck out (the gooseneck is very sturdy). Well, I peered inside with a flashlight and didn't see any exposed electrical fittings, so I poured small fishing shot into the hole where the battery cover tabs closed, Voila! Weighted the base perfectly. This is a really good price for a super little light.

I use this to light up my keyboard at night so I don't have to hunt for 'F' and 'J' (my fingers can't feel the bumps very well). It works great but, I agree with the base being too light.

I found that throwing a bunch of pennies inside the batter case works great so long as you don't have batteries in there.

The USB cord is only about 3 feet but, it works great if you use an open front computer desk.

The construction is very hardy for an inexpensive little light and, it doesn't blind you in a completely dark room.

Honest reviews on HDE Mini LED Desk Light, Black

If you don't like a lot of flourecent light and keep it fairly dark in your PC area, this works great for a keyboard light on your desk. The base is way too light and it does tip over unless you don't position it just right. That is its only drawback (one star deduction) other than that I use it everyday and have no complaints. I also use it for a constant "on" for my office to provide a night light effect for exiting and entering the dark office area I work in as I am usually the first in and first out. It works great for that purpose as well. The cord is also a little short so plan on being fairly close to whatever USB power source you are gonna plug it in to. I haven't used the battery option yet but I can see where it would make a great travel light, depending on the battery life.

I use this light primarily for reading at night. My wife called it my "stupid lamp" thinking it was silly, but now she steals it from me on a regular basis.

Pros:

1. Can take batteries. Since it's LED, these last a long time. Haven't had to replace mine yet and I've used it everyday for over a month.

2. Small and light. It's easy to put anywhere and move around especially with batteries.

3. Moveable neck. Sometimes I point this at a wall or ceiling to provide a "night light" sort of effect while others I aim it at my Kindle to read.

Cons:

1. Wide angle light. I was thinking this light would be a fairly focused beam so I could read without light shining on my wife. Alas, I was wrong. I put it on my headboard (just above my head when sitting up in bed) and point it at my book and it lights up the whole bed. For some this might not be a Con, but it is for me.

2. LED's are bright. Since this is a wide angle light, you can see the LED's directly a lot of the time. They are really hard to look at. I had to put it on my headboard to read because, on my nightstand, I could see them out of the corner of my eye and it was blinding.

3. LED's are cool. I don't mean to the touch (which they are as well) but have a cooler tone to the color. I prefer warmer slightly orange/yellow lighting but the fact is that most LED's have a cooler tone. This isn't a direct fault of this product but of LED's in general. Cooler light is harder to read in than warmer light.

Verdict:

I like this light. If it had some sort of hood that could direct the light better and shade your eyes from the LED's, this would be a 5 star. As it is, it's a 4 star.

This is a great cheap CFL, turns on fast, and puts out great light quickly, as with most, takes a few seconds to warm up and put out full light, but I love that it turns on when you hit the switch not 2.5 seconds later like some.

Will buy more, especially as cheap as they are.

I needed a full spectrum, BRIGHT light for watercolor painting. Even though I have a variety of light in my art studio, I found that once the sun went down, my colors shifted dramatically and I couldn't tell the subtle differences between colors even with the brightest lights. Even those commercial lights that "promised" true color did not deliver.

I hesitated getting a full spectrum bulb because I had one years ago (an expensive one that had rave reviews) and it always made me a little sick to my stomachthe color was very strange (very much like a bathroom at Subway or something) and it flickered a bit.

However, not getting any work done after the sunset or on rainy days was starting to be a real hinderance, so I bit the bullet and ordered this 45-Watt bulb. I am so pleased!

It's VERY bright! It's replacing a standard 100 watt bulb and it's much brighter than that. It's easily the brightest light in the house, but not in a way that makes you feel like it's a spotlight. It's also a PERFECT shade of white lightnot too cool, and has no eerie "color" cast like green or blue. It truly is like sitting by the window on a sunny day. It also turns on immediately (no flickering or warming up) and stays true. I also have to say that I feel myself a little more energized when sitting under itI know these bulbs are sometimes used for Seasonal Affective Disorder and even though this bulb is not designed for that specific purpose, I do feel a moderate difference in my mood.

My only complaint is that it's heavy and largethe bulb is about 7" long and 2.5" deep. It screwed right into my medium-sized drafting lamp (designed for standard bulbs you buy at the grocery store, so no special lamp needed), but pokes out a bit from the metal hood. I'm a little worried that I might inadvertently smash the bulb while reaching for something across my workspace. It's also testing the strength of the hinge on my lamp.

But to be honest, I'm so pleased with this bulb that I'd rather invest in another lamp than switch it out. And I am seriously thinking about purchasing several more of these bulbs to replace the standard bulbs we have around our house. The bright, sunny light makes that much of a difference.

I am a painter of the 'visual art' variety. I use these bulbs in my artist lamps and they are wonderful. Gone are the days of painting at night then discovering in the light of day that my colors are all wrong! Also they are great for lighting my paintings for photographing them. These bulbs are really pretty tough...I knocked a lamp over and the bulb did not break, whew!

This light is beautiful! Reading under its light is an amazing experience. My text is clear, soft and very easy on the eyes. Its beautiful pure white light is made clear when you place it next to other so called white and full spectrum lights. Next to this they all have a yellow tone to one extent or another. It took me 10 expensive light purchases before I found this. Save your money and buy this one first then you can compare it to others and be ready to be shocked.

I like this tone so much that I have removed the long florescent tubes in my kitchen and changed the base to accept standard light bulbs so I can use this instead. Over time I will replace every light in my house with this exact light. At night if you lay under the light and close your eyes, you can almost trick your mind into thinking its soft sunlight... Simply wonderful for those that live in 25C temps every day.

Honest reviews on Full Spectrum Light Bulb - ALZO 45W CFL 5500K - Daylight balanced

I often don't get as much sunlight as I should due to screwy sleep patterns. Full spectrum lights are very helpful in this regard, so I can get "sunlight" even in the middle of the night.

The 5500K ALZO bulbs are the closest thing I've found to actual sunlight. I've seen reviews with proper colorimeter readings and such, but not having access to such gear, my basic test is to compare the color to natural sunlight through a window on a sunny day. The color these bulbs put out is quite close to that. I've also tried some photographic tests, calibrated with a gray card, and these bulbs produce the best results of the full spectrum bulbs I've tried.

The main downside with the 45W bulbs is that they are quite large, particularly being quite long at 7". You may need a larger harp, or a larger shade, or to relocate a standing lamp so the bulb can stick out but not be in your field of view. And for some lamps and most overhead fixtures, 45W bulbs won't fit at all. It's a limitation of the technology, of course, so any manufacturer's 45W CFL is going to be similarly sized. Due to the size issue, I only have one of these, at my desk, and a few 23W and 27W full spectrum bulbs elsewhere; it was easier and cheaper to use multiple smaller CFLs in most cases.

Keep in mind that your brain expects light to get yellower as it dims, part of the reason that "normal" bulbs are usually 2700 3000K and thus much more yellow. While these look like natural sunlight on a sunny day, at night the pure white light feels a bit sterile and clinical at first. I've come to prefer this as the dominant lighting at my desk (especially since my laptop LCD is 6500K), but I like to mix full spectrum bulbs in with smaller "normal" bulbs for overhead lighting, and even then only in rooms that I spend a lot of time in.

In short, these are about the best thing you'll find if you need sunlight indoors for whatever reason: sleep problems, mood disorders, photography, or just a preference for pure white light. Just keep the size of the bulb in mind...

This is a bright light! But in a living room? Not for our family. The light is too cold and sterile. It gives a stark feeling to the space. I wanted a feeling like warm sunlight, which is what I was assuming I would get with a full-spectrum bulb, but for that you really need some yellow to balance it, I guess.

Now, we also bought a 4-pack of the 27 watt bulbs by the same manufacturer and we like them better. They are not quite as bright and with other bulbs in the room, they balance out to have a very nice light. I bought this to help combat seasonal affective disorder. I live in the northern states and we haven't seen the sun for a long time. I will try this bulb in the garage where bright light is really needed when you are looking for something. No need to send it back. It is a good bulb, but better for photography applications than household ones. Be aware that you may need a larger harp if you intend on using this with a lampshade and it probably won't fit inside most overhead glass fixtures. This is a very large bulb. It did come on instantly--no wait or hum.

Since the government is going to "outlaw" 100W incandescent bulbs, I had to buy an alternative. The C.F.L. (compact florescent light) bulbs are nice, but not as bright as what they're meant to replace.

The next step was L.E.D.

They come in a variety of brightness scales, 3W at 2000K scale is about the average night light. "Cool white" (6000K) was the best for me.

This bulb has a 360 degree lighting, while others do not. If it has LED's all the way around, you're good. Read the fine print to be sure

The only 2 drawbacks (cons) that I see are:

1. the physical size. If you have limited space, sometimes the LED Corn Bulb is not the way to go. Compared to it's Incandescent partner, THIS particular bulb won't physically fit into the same small space; it's slightly wider, and about 1/4 longer. So, if your fixture has a cap or glass enclosure, this bulb probably won't fit. Measure your fixtures' available area to be sure.

2. ability to dim. Unlike standard bulbs, most LED bulbs cannot be dimmed You must buy "dimmable" units. They're quite a bit more in cost, but if that's what you need, it's worth it in energy savings.

If the name of the game is saving money, LED is the way to go.

I bought a pack of these a couple of months ago, and they really work. Like the review ahead of me, they do what they say. Main good points: Very solid build, does not require direct sunlight to charge, easily changed backup coin cells, runs a long time on a full charge, nice usable amount of light. Cons: the on-off switch isn't labled, so if you don't use it regularly it is not clear if you are running off the solar cell or running down your backup coin cells. Takes a long time to fully charge the solar cell if the battery is completely run down (2 days direct sunlight, 1 week if set in a window that gets daylight but no direct sun). These are really useful lights.

UPDATE 10/21/10. I've now had them about 1 1/2 years and still going strong. Well made.

I am a real fan of the Nightstar flashlights, but felt I had to check out the Solarlite. I had the Solarlite for a month now and feel it delivers what it promises. It floats, works under water, and just as tuff as my Nightstar. I have used it well over 6 hours on one solar charge. It is interesting to see that it does not need to be in direct sun light to start charging. I can see this as a general work light, where you leave it on the dash of your work truck to keep it full charged up. The backup batteries are 2 CR2032 3v button cells that are replaceable. It's brighter and smaller then my Nightstar. I can only see one advantage the Nightstar has over the Solarlite, and that is the on and off switch. The Nightstar switch glows in the dark to help find the flashlight. The Solarlite has a clicking system, where you have to click pass the battery backup mode to turn off the flashlight. This would drain a second of battery backup power each time you go to turn off the flashlight, but it can be seen as a way to make sure your backup batteries are working. I really like this light and have replace the factory lanyard with a split ring and glow in the dark tent cord.

I was a little skeptical at first but I went ahead and ordered 4 of these (2x2-pack) to have around the house as my emergency flashlights. I was quite pleased when I got them and they seem to be made very well. I did not find the click through confusing at all (1st click = solar (yellow led), 2nd click = battery (green led), 3rd click = off/standby (red LED means it's charging)). There are also small symbols under each LED which are pretty self explanatory as to what mode you are in. I also didn't really realize they were water proof when I got them so that was a nice little bonus. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I like a flashlight to have some weight to it (like a Maglite). I'm not saying I want to hit somebody over the head with it a more solid feel would make this perfect. Nevertheless, for the price it's a great solar flashlight and I recommend it.

Honest reviews on Hybrid Solar Powered Flashlight with Emergency Battery Backup

Edit: I had one of my four lights refuse to hold a charge on the solar battery after leaving it in the cupboard for three months. It seems my initial suspicions were confirmed. It had been charging in the sun for a week before I stored it. From reading other reviews, it seems that the company may have some QC issues. The other three of mine still work fine though. Just keep the receipt if you buy one of these retail, and test your lights!

:End Edit

To summarize this review: Great emergency flashlight, but keep it exposed to light to gain the full benefits. It is not as useful for deep storage, and I'll explain why below.

I bought two 2-packs of these lights at Costco. They are very light and rugged, and their backup battery is lithium which means the light can be neglected for up to seven years and still function. The lithium batteries are replaceable too! They are standard, disposable lithium button cells. The solarlite trickle-charges its solar battery whenever natural light hits it. And now, my one minor gripe:

Despite what they say about the solar battery holding a charge, I guarantee if you leave this flashlight in complete darkness for a year, its "primary" solar battery will be dead. The manufacturer is being a little coy about the fact that rechargeable batteries in general do NOT hold their charge well in deep storageyou need to top them off once in a while to keep them useful. That means keeping this light stashed on a window sill, rather than in the drawer.

This company also makes a hybrid shake light, which I think is better for deep storage. It uses lithium batteries as the PRIMARY batteries and the backup power is shake powerwhich makes more sense if you think about it.

I just bought a 2 pack from Costco 3 days ago for $20. One of the two works just as claimed, one does not work off the batteries even after I swapped the batteries. It must be the internal circuitry.

However, both work pretty well from the Solar power and provide usable light. As I write this, I am in the process of testing one and will leave it running all night to see how long it lasts.

As mentioned in the other reviews, the on/off switch is a bit confusing as there is a danger that other family members who do not fully know it's solar to battery to off mechanism might drain the battery source.

I will most likely return to Costco and get a pair that works from both solar and battery energy sources.
