My wife is very sensitive to bad light we've never had CFLs for that reason but she never noticed when I bought this and put it in our main living room lamp for two weeks. I plan to get several more. Lovely light.

These are good, but don't match the efficacy of the Phillips Award Winning LED, which is a much lighter yellow. Also, the yellow color when turned off is an issue in some lighting fixtures. We found that the Cree A-lamp LED replacements were better and cheaper for most of our applications.

I bought 5 bulbs for a hanging dining room fixture. My biggest complaint is they are not fully dimmable. Move the dimmer 1/4 and the bulbs start flickering. Lower dim further increases flicker. I purchased other LED bulbs after these for 1/2 the price and which are fully dimmable and also have nice bright light. My best success/dollar has been with dimmable Utilitech LED bulbs, 800 lumen. They dim completely, very bright and about $12.

Honest reviews on Philips 422238 8-Watt A19 LED Light Bulb, Dimmable

I bought these to replace incandescent bulbs and they work great. Very low power consumption and heat output, but a little bigger than an incandescent. The yellow shell is a little funky, but it really does shine with a white cast. The only drawback is that some times you can see a little of the yellow through the lamp shade or globe. We noticed a drop in our monthly electric bill when we switched to all LED bulbs, although with the prices it will be longer than I like before we recoup our cost. Eventually the bulb will still pay for itself though. And all of the Philips bulbs that claim to be dimmable really are dimmable. People that have had issues are probably using cheap dimmers. Heath-Zenith and Levitron dimmers work fine with these bulbs.

The main reason Phillips created this bulb is to have an energy saving bulb that's compatible with all incandescent lights. They did really well, and it does use a lot less energy. It looks different, space age in a way, compared to the antiquated glass bulbs. It's also very durable: I have dropped these onto my wood floor and it works fine.

But the best part about this is the life. I haven't had to replace this bulb since I first installed a similar one by them a year and a half ago. My light fixtures require screws to remove, and sometimes i would go a whole week without changing a burnt bulb because of the frustration of having to change it. Not having to change a bulb for years, maybe even over a decade (if you live or work in the same place that long) is a huge convenience, and pays for the bulb in both actual savings and time spent.

Better than expected, heavy / wide base prevents tipping. Puts the light and magnification lens right where you need it.

Delivered as ordered promptly. Great lamp and I shopped around online before choosing this one because of the large magnifier size and also the 5 diopter is stronger than most others. It was a bit hard to put together and align the floor base my husband said, but he did get it together after that. So far I like it alot it is easy to angle the lamp just where I need it. I use mine for making crystal jewelry, beading and I can also use it when I do my own shellac nails. Very happy with this purchase so far. I'm giving it 4 stars only because of the fact it does come disassembled.

Thank you for such great service.

I was a little worried that I was going to receive a cheap lamp. But I was happy to be wrong. Its a solid, heavy, well built lamp. That will most likely last for many years to come. The arm stays where I place it and the structure is solid enough that Im not worried about it wearing out from just moving the arm around. Im a very happy customer. Thank you for supplying a great product.

As we all grow older our fine focus fades. Mine certainly has to the point that I often resort to wearing strong reader glasses over my prescription ones! I recently purchased a diopter magnifying lamp. I just LOVE it!!!! I can wheel it around to where I choose to work. The arm flexes to just how I want to view through it. I can comfortably engage in projects that require extra focus again with ease! These aren't just for the 40-Year-Old virgin (the Movie; no reference to actual folks) in his hobbies.

I am using this bulbs for my recessed fittings and using it everyday around 5 to 7 hours for the past 1 year (almost). So far it is working fine. The only problem I need to highlight is the reliability of the bulb joint around the ballast. One of the bulb came out separate from the ballast with little force when tried to fit it inside the 4" recessed can. Hope it helps new buyers not to apply more force to fit.

I installed one in our kitchen (in a recessed lighting can above our sink). Since the area the bulb is installed in is normally dark, we tend to leave the light on at all times. I initially bought this CFL for it's long life and energy savings, but while most R20 incandescent lamps I've tried last about 6 months in continuous operation, this model only lasted 2 weeks! After reading some reviews on this model (post-mortem), I found out that it is *not* recommended for recessed lighting applications like mine. What's worse is that the packaging did not mention this rather important fact. Oh well, maybe another model will fare better.

This bulbs fit and worked fine for me. The big annoyance is that they take over a minute to come up to decent light levels. For where we are using it, that is unfortunately a major annoyance. Next time, I will look for a fast starter in the R20 style.

Honest reviews on Sylvania 29587 14-Watt Compact Fluorescent Lamp with R20 reflector

I bought a set of 3 to use in my track lights. After a little less than 2 months, one out of the three no longer works. Also, it takes a minute or so to get bright enough to be helpful as a light source.

It seems challenging finding the right size & light value in fluorescents. Found what I needed for several fixtures at home in this product. The base of the bulb is slightly larger than a conventional incandescent bulb (was a problem in our last house as the ceiling "can" was narrower than the then-available R40 bulbs).

The color of this bulb is very close to that of a standard incandescent my wife didn't even notice until a couple days after installation.

This bulb has a way to go in the wattage department to equal the 50 watt halogen they are meant to replace. All of these bulbs that are classified as warm white seem to be lacking in warmth of color, again, not quite the equal of an incandescent bulb. Maybe these features will be improved with time. But for now they are a satisfactory replacement.

At a little over 10 bucks for 8 of these, you can't go wrong.

These are just your basic CFLs, at the 2700 kelvin temperature range. That means they're about the same shade as your basic ordinary 60W incandescent bulb. A pale yellow white, not pure white (5100 Kelvin), or daylight (around 6300 Kelvin).

Pure white or daylight CFLS cost more because the phosphors in them are more expensive, but they do have the advantage of being more natural light, rather than imitating the poor quality light of an ordinary light bulb.

So if you're thinking of upgrading to CFLs these bulbs are a great deal to start from. But do take advantage of the technology & get a higher quality light at a higher color temperature for some of your areas, & enjoy better quality light, rather than just using CFLs that imitate the poor quality light of old fashioned light bulbs.

Winter depression can be triggered by lack of natural light because of less hours of daylight, & more cloudy, overcast days in winters. In northern climates when it's cold, people stay inside more, use heavy insulating window curtains, further reducing their exposure to natural light. 5100K-6700k CFLs help with winter depression by exposing you to more natural light. Colors look more rich & vivid. Things look more cheery. It's even easier to read under natural light.

I find I can read just as easy under a 4-watt 5100k CFL than a 13 watt 2700k CFL.

The backlight in your LCD display that you're probably reading this from is probably a 5100k-6700K bulb.

Look at the white areas on the screen & then look at your lighting in the room. Doesn't that ordinary light bulb or 2700K CFL look a lot more yellow by comparison?

Things to look on the package:

1. Kelvin temperature (K): The only accurate measurement for the kind of light or "color" of light you'll get. 2700K is pretty close to the "warm" incandescent we are all used to, 4100/4200K is known as "Cool White" (you might look "ghostly under that) and 5,000+ is the daylight/sunlight. If the lamps do not have the K designation, do not buy them they are the cheaper variety since establishing the K temp. costs more.

2. Lamp Life (Hrs): The life of a light bulb is the MEAN life, that is at the stated hours HALF of them will be dead and HALF of them will still be working. Life can be affected by many factors, one being how many times a day you turn them on and how long they stay on. As a rule, the more on/off's, the less they last.

3. Initial lumens: If it is not listed try another brand. For the typical 60W equivalent it ranges between 700 and 900 lumens. Try for 800+ In general the highest the K temp. (see #1 above) the higher the lumens.

4. Make sure you read what they say about DIMMERS, as well as photocells, timers, etc. Avoid costly surprises.

5. Make sure they are rated for outdoor use if that's where you want to install them. The environment's temperature has a lot to do with the CFL performance.

6. Buy as few as you can first and redo, say one room. See how YOU like it (allow 90 seconds warm-up time). If you are a male, have your female with you...she might have some objections you can't even think about!

HAPPY HUNTING!

Best Deals for GE 13-Watt Energy SmartTM - 8 Pack - 60 watt replacement

I bought two 8-packs at my shopping club a couple of years ago. I needed them to replace 8 incandescent bulbs in the basement where, with the exception of the area where my home office is located, I didn't need very bright lights. The second carton was bought for 'spares' and because they were on sale at the time I made the purchase. Two years later, the spares carton has 3 bulbs left, indicating that 5 out of 8 have burned out. This tells me that the 5-years/8000 hours life expectancy claim is wildly optimistic, to use a mild term.

My personal experience with these bulbs is as follows:

the light they produce yellow, not very bright is more or less on par with what you get of a 60W incandescent, maybe a little less than a traditional 60W.

they do save energy for as long as they last given their short lifespan in my basement, not sure if they pay for themselves

quality seems to be an issue 5 out of 8 burned out before 2 years all 8 subjected to about the same conditions (they all go on/off at the same time

the claim of 8000 hours or 5 years life expectancy is clearly way off-base perhaps GE should make their test data available

the Amazon price at the time I am writing this review is competitive with what I saw at my shopping club.

This may come close to comparing apples to oranges but I must say that I am very happy with the Feit Electric ESL40TN/D 42-Watt Compact Fluorescent High-Wattage Bulb, Daylight of which I am using 2 in the same basement, in my 'office' area and I bought 2 more a few months ago for the study. I paid a premium for them and I've only used them for a little less than one year at the time I write this (Feb. 2010) so the fact that none has burned out yet is not 'proof' but... time with tell.

I hesitate between 2 and 3 stars 2 Amazon stars means 'I don't like it' vs. 3 stars meaning 'it's okay'. My generous nature wins this time and it's 3 stars but GE needs to seriously look into the 'quality' thing or these CFL may discourage some people from adopting replacing their incandescent bulbs with the more efficient fluorescents.

Honest reviews on GE 13-Watt Energy SmartTM - 8 Pack - 60 watt replacement

I have changed to CFLs (GE) in my home. I now write the install date on the bulb because of failure sometimes within three (3) months. The fixtures that fail are random but have used standard bulbs for years. ALSO PLEASE NOTE: The package states the bulbs should be placed base down. What kind of saving do you get if you need to replace the fixture? One positive point is that GE has provided me with discount coupons when I called.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for GE 13-Watt Energy SmartTM - 8 Pack - 60 watt replacement

I have switched all of my bulbs to CFLs over the past 5 years. I started noticing that I was changing bulbs more often that I used to with the incandescent type. I then started writing the date on the ballast of the bulb when I changed it. I discovered that it was only the GE brand bulbs that were burning out in less than 6 months. In fact, the last one I changed lasted 20 days (8 of which I was on vacation). It was in a two bulb fixture with a generic bulb that lasted for several years which proves that under the same conditions the GE bulb lasted 3 weeks and the generic lasted several years. On average I get one or two months from the GE CFLs. I have bought generic unlabeled bulbs that have lasted several years. The 5 year warranty requires you to pay more for shipping than it would cost to buy a new one. Talk about a company selling junk with a fake warranty. I will never buy anything made by GE ever since all they make is junk.

This thing just went on my wishlist. I borrowed one to use on my night run at a Ragnar Relay last summer, and it just lit up the night, so much so that I had to look away from reflective road signs to keep from getting blinded. They're not much heavier than a Petzl or Black Diamond headlamp of the same style (external battery), and the strap is comfy. The only downside is they're very expensive. But I'd say they're worth it.

This dandy little flashlight is true spectrum UV. Others out there are just Purple LEDs: Florescent colors and white should glow if the diodes are correct. I actually use them to spot where to "touch up" paint. Thin areas of color especially with a heavy texture substrates, it is easy to instantly spot where more paint is needed. Assuming you are painting a dark color over white or light color. I have had these for a few months and as a contractor, I am pretty rough on some of my equipment. These have performed well, withstanding a second story drop without incident. Battery life is excellent as expected with led's.

Note: Four out of five for minor issues, see below.

I've been wanting something like this for quite a while now. I'm a science minded individual and fell in love with blacklight when I was little. The only problem with the kind of blacklight I grew up with is that if you wanted portability, you had to use a long extension cord not great for field use. This little bugger fits in a pocket with ease (similar in size to a longish D battery), is made of rugged aluminum, has a nice (although somewhat flakey on mine) Maglite-like pressure switch in the butt end, and is actually surprisingly intense. Even has a nice lanyard for if you need to hold onto it extra carefully or hang it from whatever. The real show starts tonight, but so far I've had great results with it on longwave UV fluorescing materials like grease splatter, tooth plaque, tighty whitey underwear, etc. You should see this thing set off modern strontium aluminate glow powder, OMG... BRIGHT green glow in daylight! I love this thing already, but I will point out a couple of things not so great about it for you:

1) It gets warm pretty fast. This is my first experience with UV LEDs, so I don't know how normal this is, but see #2 for why I'm not so comfy with the fast warming.

2) There is NO driver circuit, near as I can tell. The circuit amounts to a bunch of LEDs driven directly by three AAA batteries. Now I know LEDs are not laser diodes and as such don't need to be babied nearly so carefully, but still... No driver circuit + quick to get warm, and I wonder how long it will last. Also, minor issue, AAA batteries aren't great for mAH ratings with this amount of heat being generated, current consumption must be fairly substantial... Yeah ok I read almost 90mA on my BK Precision 2405A DMM on the 10A setting. Not terrible, BUT, don't expect a lot of runtime. I haven't tried it with NiMH AAAs yet, but I don't expect it to be as high performance. Still, for one, this is the price of such fantastic portability, and for two, NiMH may work reasonably well. Just don't run it for extended periods and bear in mind it's a battery muncher, and it should serve you well.

3) That switch on mine... it's flakey. Sometimes it needs a gentle nudge to work even when it's clicked into the on position. Not a big deal, I've dealt with worse and it's only going to be used now and then so whatever.

General consensus? Big fun in a little package! I can tell I'm going to LOVE this thing. I can't wait to get it out around some road gravel in the dark, to see if I can find some fluorescent geology. It's a pity I didn't have this when I lived in the hills of TN, and had acres upon acres of wild land pocked with bare rock outcroppings to wander around in. I also can't wait to examine my walls and floors tonight after dark, to see what disgusting stains and splatters I will find in my home. Plus, I work in a kitchen, and it should be interesting to see what I find there as well. I'm definitely not disappointed in my purchase, this is going to keep my interest for a long time. :-)

This light is super bright, small & compact, and appears to be of good quality. The box states the light wave is 380-385nm. The body is aluminum, the switch is rubber coated and has a positive click feel similar to a mag light. I purchased it to find urine spots in the carpet and it works great for that. I was even able to see prior spots I thought I had cleaned well.

We have two cats and for a long time life was good. In December we added a new dog to the list and the male cat decided to start marking its territory. After doing an extensive research I decided to get this light versus others. It was LED and UV true spectrum. Of course you have to use it at night, but oh my God... I have to rent a carpet steamer... The light was able to pick up all the spots. So I attest that it is excellent for pet pee detection (on condition of being used at night (dark room) with no other light source). I could also use it around the house to detect leaks.

I have been using these lights around my house for about 10 years now. They work very nice. The glass works similar to the projector glass on car headlamps and really magnifies the beam. Very nice. Do NOT install these fixtures pushed all the way in the ground, and to mow over them like a previous poster. That is not a proper install and will facilitate water egress into the fixture, thus shortening the life of the fixture and lamp. They work best if installed in a mulch bed so the bollard portion is above ground. Replacement sockets are readily available for these fixtures. I have purchased them a few times as needed over the years. Simply search for G4 type bi-pin sockets. Replacement lamps can also be found very cheaply right here on Amazon. Search for 10W 12V G4 TYPE JC Bi-Pin Lamp. I just purchased 12 lamps for $5.98, inc. shipping. The box store lamps are way overpriced. Use a bit of grease on the threads of the fixture. This will make it much easier to unscrew the fixture at a later date. Keep the lamps replaced! These fixtures work best when they utilize the heat of the lamp to keep things dry.

I have 3 of these lights in the ground around the pool to provide a lit accent border. The light is easy to install, took me less than 5 minutes each. The price is very good, and the glass mushroom top is good even if installing in grass as long as you don't keep it raised up too much to interfere with the mower.

I have had these type for about 6 years and then needed to replace a few that got some corrosion around the light bulb socket. My advice would be to make sure you tighten the glass lens top, and consider some silicone in addition to the rubber o-ring that it comes with, that might avoid condensation which might have been my problem.

I am thankful that this little bulb gives lots of light. after i bought this 5w bulb, I read some reviews with 1 or 2 star ratting, and I thought that may have bought the wrong bulb, so let it burn 48 hrs before turning it off. Now I am leaving it on 8 to 12 hrs each day, and every little little light is shining real bright. I will continue to leave it on and prove to myself that this is a reliable bulb. So I am giving this bulb a 5 star ratting.

I bought these for my fish tank hood cover. The lighting was the best I ever saw and made every color "POP". However, after 4 weeks the brightness began to fade to a dull flourescent type light. In all fairness, using these bulbs in a humid environment such as a fish tank was an experiment...I can only assume that under normal use around the house/shop they would work just fine. The 5W does give a nice bright light for a small area. Suggest you go out to Google and search LED wattage vs regular bulb wattage for a comparison of what size bulb is right for your particular use. I hope my 2 cents helps.

I haven't had any problems with heat or lights going out. I actually have mine over the stove and leave it on as a night light in the kitchen for using the bathroom at night. This allows me to leave it on all night and barely use any electricity. Like others have mentioned, when you put a shade over it, the light just doesn't have the penetrating power like a regular bulb. If you could position one of these where the light has no cover, but bounces off a wall, or if you had a sunken fixture in your ceiling, they would be great. I hope they can work on the technology of these to eventually make them the standard. Oh and the light of this was very 'white'.

This lamp replaced an incandescent "candelabra" fixture, that had 5 40W bulbs. Installed, I find that it provides about the same amount of light, but with more-even lighting because it doesn't have the self-shadowing effect that the old fixture had (from any point in the room, only three or four bulbs were visible). The net effect is to illuminate the room noticeably better than the old fixture did.

As my first attempt, I tried reusing the plain rheostat dimmer that was already installed with the old fixture. However, with that dimmer, this lamp would only dim partially (a third, or maybe half at best). After some research, I decided on a "Diva" Lutron C.L dimming switch, advertised as being specifically designed to work with dimmable fluorescent and LED lamps. With that dimmer switch, this lamp is dimmable to practically the same low level as was possible with the incandescent fixture, but without the annoying unpredictability of the old rheostat dimmer switch.

Two main negatives:

-it has a noticeable susceptibility to variations in line voltage. Switching loads (vacuum, washing machine, toaster oven, etc.) cause the light to flicker, as does whatever kind of switching that the new dimmer switch imposes (i.e. there's a perceptible flicker when the light is set at lower settings).

The flicker isn't a deal-breaker, and I'm somewhat sensitive to stuff like that. But it does exist. It would be nice if the drivers for the bulbs included circuitry to smooth out the voltage changes. I realize that since it's dimmable, it has to respond to voltage changes, but it could include a bit of lag to avoid this flickering effect.

-Installation was a bit trickier than I think it needed to be, due to the fancy solid-capped nuts that screw onto the double-ended bolts that ultimately attach the fixture to its mounting plate. The end result is a slightly nicer-looking installation, but a) the nuts aren't visible once you put the diffuser glass on anyway, and b) it's very tricky to get the double-ended bolts screwed into the mounting plate to just the right depth (they use set bolts to hold them in place).

Granted, this whole affair was made even more difficult by the low-quality installation of the original fixture's junction box, which wiggles around quite a bit. But I think that's not uncommon in a lot of spec houses.

I would have preferred a more fool-proof mounting design, at the expense of appearance. As I mentioned, it's not like you see the mounting bolts and nuts after the glass is installed anyway.

This light is somewhat more inexpensive than similar models.

I've used it for running and it seems to be fairly water resistant, as I have had no problems with sweat ruining it.

It is not as bright as you might think for having 6 LEDs in it. The angle adjustor works fine, but it appears that it won't last very long.

If you're willing to spend just a little bit more, I would definitely go for one of the Petzl headlamps. They seem just as bright to me and weigh less than this lamp.

was shopping around for around a month at many a store to find LED christmas lights that had the same look and Warm glow the old style mini bulbs had. this is it, and the best part is each strand only uses a few watts!!! we had a total of 750 on our tree which only would use around 48 watts an hour compared to 300-400 watts an hour depending on the strand types of non-LED style.

We put this lantern on a pilaster in front of our home, and it looks great. When lit, it shines a very interesting pattern of light on the surrounding surface. We like it a lot.

I wanted a post lamp that would operate off of a photoelectric sensor while saving energy (and money) and this all-in-one fixture seemed like it would fit the bill, but it was just not bright enough. I wanted enough light to illuminate my small front yard and this wasn't up to the task.
