My handyman installed this without incident. The appearance is sleek and modern, complementing a stainless range. The fan is not tool loud and works well for the rear burners. One feature that is a bit disconcerting is that it exhausts some air from the top of the hood to cool the light bulbs. It makes me wonder if this is why it captures less fumes than I would like from the front of the stove.
UPDATE 12/05/09 FIVE stars!***** Based on advice in the first comment on my review, I had the installation checked, and in fact, the baffle was diverting part of the exhaust from the duct to the top front vents, as though it were a ductless installation. Now there is no more exhaust air at all coming out of the top front vents. I did a smoke test, and the hood now draws from the front burner area. This hood, properly installed, works as well as it looks--and that is saying a lot. Check R. Parkinson's comment for advice on correct installation of the baffle.
1. Damper was provided for a 3x10 vent, but NOT for a 7" round vent. This was a surprise "not included" part disclosure hidden within poorly written instructions. This part was not available at Home Depot or Lowe's, and can only be ordered online from various parts retailers. I needed one now so I had to creatively use the damper from the old unit I removed. Then, I had to made some modifications in the duct pipe to widen the mouth.
2. Instructions show unit being installed without range being pulled out since it calls for electrical being hooked up before mounting under cabinets, noting you should protect the range with cardboard. What a joke! This unit is heavy and takes two people to line up the mounting screws and insert into the duct pipe at the same time. Took several tries until all four screws and vent connected adequately. The vent pipe ended up at a slight angle since the hole in the new unit was not in the same location as the old unit. The two left mounting screws are hard to see and requires a long screwdriver due to fan housing.
3. Wiring connection is on right side top or back. My old unit was on the left back, so I had to put another hole in the wall and pull the wire over to the new location. Oh, you'll also need to furnish your own wire connector clamp for the cutout in the new unit.
It was quite a day for me and my wife and was I sore allover the following day. But it was worth it since it looks good and performs well. But if I had to do it again, I certainly would hire a handyman to do the installation!

Exhaust fan looks great, but I'm a little disappointed that the fan motor is only on one side instead of in the middle. The exhaust pulls great on the left side of the stove, but not as good on the right and the detailed instructions with the exhuast fan even tell you that the right side will not exhaust as well as the left. I wish this fact was also included in the description of the product. If so, I may have bought another brand. If you are installing this fan, make sure you take off the section on the front where the lights are mounted which will gain you better access to installing the exhaust fan under the cabinet. The instructions do not tell you this and if you take that part off before you start installing, it's a lot easier. We found this out too late after my husband had screwed in the back part to the under cabinet. Make sure you order the halogen lights which add so much to the brightness of the cooking area. The product arrived so quickly we were pleasantly surprised when it arrived in only a couple of days. Item was well packed and arrived without any dings or dents. All in all, this is a good exhaust fan. When it is running on low or medium, there is very little noise. As expected it is a little more noisy on the high level. I wish there was a button to light up over the brightness level buttons on the lights, since you have to push that brightness level button you are using to cut off the light. I guess after some use I'll get acclimated to which level of brightness the lights are on and not have to stop and try to decide which button to push to get the light off. This is not a major problem however.Best Deals for Broan QS230SS Allure II 30-Inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood, Stainless
We've now had this range hood for about 6 months and yes it's pretty to look at, nice halogen lights and all, and it seems generally functional, but the most annoying thing I must say is that the exhaust fan will turn on by itself when the Advance Heat Sentry Technology detects heat and it cannot be turned off manually AT ALL! So this noisy fan must continually run in your kitchen until it decides it's safe to shut itself off, my god it's unbearable, my wife says it's like water torture. It stays on for hours, it grates on you, and we absolutely hate it. You can't even set it on a lower fan speed, nothing stops the incessant noise from the higher fan speed and you can't shut it off. If you buy this product bewareyou have been forewarned.Honest reviews on Broan QS230SS Allure II 30-Inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood, Stainless
This is a great hood that looks sharp above my new gas stove -much better than the old microwave with hood! I really like the fact you can use halogen bulbs, which make things really bright for cooking. There are 3 fan speeds and 3 light settings. I'm very happy, even though my setup is ventless, it still gets the job done -quietly, too. The fact you can use this in any configuration is a wonderful feature. A beautiful range hood unit once installed. But installation to a 7" round ducted vent turned into an all-day job. I would have given a rating of 5 stars but:1. Before buying this, I got the 8" lamp for my bedroom. I love the energy of the lamp and it makes for much more restful sleep. So, I was delighted to get this smaller USB lamp. It is on top of my desktop tower and remains illuminated even when the computer is shut down. The energy is less dramatic than with the larger lamp so buyers might consider room size and air circulation before deciding which size to order. My overall impression is simply that the lamps generate a higher level of overall comfort. This is subtle and could therefore be denied by some people, but they feel nice and I love the shape and color.
It is impossible to suggest anything medical or to claim a health benefit from using this . . . other than the quite significant fact that these lamps have nice energy.

The approximate dimensions of this lamp are 4.5" X 3.5". My 54" cord does not have an off/on switch, it shuts off with my pc. It is a product of China, or packaged there anyway, and has a written description in english and french. If the enclosed bulb ever burns out, i see no way to replace it. The 7" version of this lamp here on amazon that plugs into a wall, has a replaceable bulb on a dimmer switch for not a lot more money, but is certainly not as portable. http://www.amazon.com/WBM-7-Inch-Himalayan-Natural-Crystal/dp/B002LZUE76/ref=pd_cp_hi_2Best Deals for Natures Artifacts Micro Salt Usb Lamp Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamps
Good price for these. I leave mine on all the time to discharge the positive ions from all the electronics in my house.Honest reviews on Natures Artifacts Micro Salt Usb Lamp Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamps
I love salt lamps and have several in different sizes and shapes. I wanted one that would always be next to my laptop, and this one fits the bill perfectly, except for one thing which is the reason I'm returning it. Nowhere in the description of this product does it say the bulb is one that changes color every few seconds, yet that is what is happening. It goes from green to yellow to purple to pink... and honestly.. it's a little distracting. I envisioned a "normal" lamp with a plain bulb in it illuminating the beautiful piece of salt. Hopefully I'll still be able to find one like that. If I could just buy a bulb and switch it for this changing thingie I'd do that, but I'm not going to fool around with unscrewing this, etc. I'm just going to return it. So again, it's a nice lamp, it works on the USB, and it's the perfect size (IMO) for use next to my laptop... but... it's going back because of the unexpected color changing feature.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Natures Artifacts Micro Salt Usb Lamp Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamps
OK, I expected this to be disappointing but it is really great -the only thing that surprised me is the two I bought change colors through the rainbow spectrum! We love them, but I wanted to use one at my professional my office but I think the colors could make it seem silly. So, I gave the second one to my boyfriend, who I thought would just laugh at me. Instead, he reports that the light changes the whole feel of his home office because of the ions! He is not into new-age at all, so I was surprised. I also feel that there could be something to the ions, as I feel them, subtly, too. We easily habituated to the changing colors, so its very nice. I still don't feel I can bring it to the office, though I am thinking of buying several for inexpensive gifts for friends/family. Some people left negative reviews stating that these bulbs are too dim. I don't know what they expected from a tiny, frosted bulb. Anyway, I bought it because I wanted to get bulbs for my 3-light ceiling fan unit above my bed that wouldn't be distractingly bright for a bedroom. The bulbs are perfect for this. 3 of them provide enough light to read comfortably. Another thing to keep in mind is that the light is bluish-white in quality. I like this, but if you are the type of person who wants yellowish, mock-incandescent light, these are not for you.

Don't expect much light out of them, but for nightlight/low light fixtures, they're just fine. No humming or buzzing, and very dimmable.Discount Desktop Adjustable Lamp with Magnifying Lens

This lamp is very compact, standing only about 16 inches tall and with a base about 7 inches by 3 inches. It sits beside my computer keyboard and is the perfect handy lamp and magnifier for reading serial numbers on articles, on documents, on my debit or credit cards and the tiny phone numbers printed on correspondence, etc.
Because of the ring flourescent light bulb, it also casts a perfect arc of neutral light to illuminate my keyboard or any article nearby. I've also set a paper weight nearby so I can prop papers up against the arm of this lamp while illuminating them -useful when transcribing data to the computer.
I've used mine for two years with no problems at all.It was not in inventory and I am still waiting for it to be shipped.

We purchased this light for our dog. No really, we did. He accompanies me to the coop daily to check on "his" chickens and close them in for the night. He carries this to light our way. We had to get something with this type of handle so he could carry it in his mouth and shine the light in the correct direction. He is a very good boy but sometimes drops the light and kicks it around with his nose to pick it back up. The light has been used at least once daily for about a year and a half. It has been dropped numerous times on both rocks and cement (from golden retriever height) and still works fine and is still on the first set of batteries. Definitly worth the money, Bouncer gives this a 5 paw ratiing.

This product is downright amazing! It works great to illuminate a dark room or hallway, such as when a blackout strikes. It works much better than a flashlight in this regard, and is of course, safe unlike unsupervised candles. And best of all, the LED lights are bright and last for days (LED's use much less electricity than fluorescent or incandenscent bulbs) using 4 'D' sized batteries. I love the mirror (which enhances brightness) and the fact that you can swivel the light upwards for 360 degree coverage and illumination. I'm buying two more for my parents and in-laws.Best Deals for Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern
Very similar in design to the four D-cell fluorescent tube lantern, still sold, which I also like, except the fluorescent tubes on that model burn out. LED model--pros: nice redesign, about the same size but more stable than fluorescent model; uses four D's for long battery life; enough light to read by if LED's are positioned close to reading material; plastic seems rugged; LED's should last forever; has a gentle single-LED yellow night light;--cons: not waterproof, not extremely bright. However, good bang for the buck.Honest reviews on Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern
No kidding, this is the most versatile and useful home light I have ever owned. I bought this after another one I had for years gave up the ghost. It's versatile stand and lighting features are great when you need light to work in a tight place like inside cabinets when doing plumbing or behind an entertainment center. It allows you to have sufficient light while your hands remain free. It is also a great light if you lose power during a storm. A great combination of no hands flashlight, tight spot work light and lantern. I will always keep one of these lights in my home.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern
We are onto day 12 with no power in NJ after Hurricane Sandy. I had one of these lanterns, along with 3 other lanterns, all different brands. 2 of the other lanterns take 8, that is right, 8 D batteries. And they last about 12 hours. THIS lantern, takes only 4 D batteries, and I have yet to replace any of them. So a few days after Sandy, I went to Amazon, and ordered 3 more of these, paid for the fast shipping, now we have 4. I will throw away the other lanterns. Keep in mind, you can't even find D batteries or lanterns in my area of the Jersey Shore. These lanterns are bright, they are small and light, and the batteries last for a very long time. As a bonus, you can flip the light up and angle it for reading, cooking and washing dishes in the dark (like we are doing in NJ), etc. It is balanced well so you can bend it to many different angles. I cross stitch large patterns, usually on 18 count aida, which causes a lot of strain for my eyes, especially when doing little confetti stitches within a larger stitched area. I'd previously had a cheap dazor-knockoff from ebay that I'd been very unhappy with as it constantly tipped over and used a regular lightbulb which created quite a bit of heat. More than once, I'd burned myself by brushing up against the bare bulb.
When I saw this one advertised, I took a chance and purchased, and the gamble paid off. First, the daylight spectrum light illuminates every nook and cranny. It uses low wattage and comes encased with a plastic shield that prevents contact with the bulb. This feature does complicate bulb replacement as you have to unscrew the shield in order to swap out bulbs, but it's an easy sacrifice to make in exchange for protection for and from the bare light.
The foot of the pedestal comes with five heavy extensions/feet...each weighs approximately 3-4 pounds, and it creates a substantial base that never once teetered as I adjusted and pulled on the arm to swivel it into position. Assembly seemed complicated when I first pulled it out of the box, but it's actually pretty simple. There's a plate on the bottom that you unscrew, you fit the little feet into the base, put the plate back on, screw it tight, insert the pole into the assembled pedestal (I had to whack mine against the floor a couple of times to get it fully inserted), and place the lighting fixture into the pole. The kit comes with a little wrench and bolt tightener...no additional tools required. Another plus, imo.
The lens is made of heavy glass and has good magnification. Each joint has adjustable resistence, even a little knob that controls that swivel of the lens head (something my other light did not have).
All of these points make for a good sale, but when you add in the price it makes for an excellent bargain. I paid only 20 dollars less than the price of this light for my cheap fixture that soon found its way into the Goodwill donation bin (even money if you counted my shipping fees versus Amazon's free shipping), and the Dazor lights I was looking at were three times the price. So to find one that is comparable in quality yet so affordable was a blessing.
11/1/11 Update: Bulb started flickering so I bought a replacment. Note that the replacment bulb needs the connector on the outside (my first bulb purchase had it on the inside so did not work). The light is still flickering on occasion so I think it is something in the light itself, not the bulb. My father no longer uses the light much since his condition has worsened and he now uses an electronic viewer. I knocked off one star due to the reliability issue.
Initially the last few reviews are fairly on-point, but there were issues with my lamp. I did NOT opt to send it back as I tend to prefer to fix a problem when possible. I'm going to go through the fixes I had to work out to get the lamp working properly.
It's best to understand that I have spent a good part of my life working on professional benches in electronics with the lamp this is a somewhat reduced copy of. thus my expectations are of something made of metal, solid and robust, mean to function for decades. This Normandie lamp has a slightly smaller magnifier (not bad at all but a bit smaller) and the entire lamp head and housing is plastic rather than metal in construction. This means coarse-thread metal screws into plastic, overall. To be clear, I'm talking about the lamp head here, the base is a good combination of plastic and metal and seems quite serviceable with all holding nuts and bolts being metal, as is the main support pole and the pantograph arm. The base is as mentioned, decently strong and of some mass.
I used Loctite on all threads that hold the pole to the base (including the through-base-bolt) as these sort of lamps have a reliable tendency to loosen up, get sloppy and then fall apart. I highly recommend this.
I was especially perplexed by the lamp head and the way mine had been assembled: with the mounting stud post REVERSED, pointing UNDER the lamp head, so that the lamp COULD not be moved into it's necessary straight-out working position. Fixing this required me to completely disassemble the lamp head.
On this newer design, with a transformerless power supply for the lamp, the power supply is a single small circuit board crammed into a small box area that is integral to the lamp housing. Not sure how long these last, I have several transformer desk lamps that are still working fine, some after 40 years. Again, this housing assembly is all plastic so playing with the metal-screws-into-plastic means extra care not to strip the threads.
This mounting post is bolted through into the power supply box and it is necessary to open the box (3 screws), remove the plastic circular shield around the fluorescent bulb (4 screws) and remove the bulb, pullout the circuit card (there's just enough wire to allow this), to get at the large nut that secures the post mount. Not much room to get in there with a crescent wrench but it's doable if you're careful. Worry here is that you'll break the plastic lamp housing trying to torque the large nut that holds the mount. I succeeded but was concerned throughout.
After loosening the large nut, it's easy to rotate the pole mount 180-degrees so it now points in the correct direction (straight out from the back of the lamp housing) then re-tighten the nut so it's solid.
I found that only one of 2 screws was installed to secure the circuit card to the box, and this one had been stripped out at the factory and wasn't dong anything. Rather than replacing the housing, they assumed one loose screw was plenty. I moved the screw from the stripped hole over to the unused hole and snugged it up.
After reassembling the lamp housing and plugging it in, all seemed good so I popped it on top of the pole base and it seems to be working. The lamp is a VERY high color-temp blueish and I'd be wary to make any artistic color judgments under it but it is indeed bright and clear.

I purchased this for my mom who is almost blind with macular degeneration. It is a great help to her so she can do things without having to hold a magnifying glass in one hand. Adjusts easily to any position.****Update--After a couple of years of daily use, a couple of problems have arisen. The joints loosen quickly and some of the tightening screws have fallen out. The first bulb didn't last long but I was able to find a replacement. That also burned out and it has been very hard to find a replacement bulb this diameter with pins on the same side. Most are made with pins on the opposite side. I purchased this lamp so that I can finish my quilts any time of day and see well to make the correct stab into the fabric. It is very nice and bright. like another reviewer noted, this device doesn't seem to work with all TRIAC dimmers. I'm using an Insteon dimmer and the LEDs are pretty much on or off. They seem to go full on around 10-30%. it seems to work well other than that and is much cheaper than other products.
I'm not docking them too much because their data sheet for this product does not show Insteon under the compatible dimmer table, but i was really hoping it would work.

This LED driver works great with the LED ribbon lights I bought from LEDWholesalers. It is only 26W so it will not power a whole 5M strip but that was not a factor for my setup. The trade off for it being dimmable with a standard dimmer is well worth it. Fast shipping and great service from eversale when I had some questions with install. They were very responsive and knowledgeable.Best Deals for 12V 26W Dimmable CV DC LED Driver ETL (UL) approved
This item is a very good for the price. Biggest complaint I would put on it is the small size of the connection terminals. They are too small for standard house wiring, 14ga wire will not fit into the input terminals. Other than that, it does exactly what it is designed to do. Dimming works very well with my X10 switch setup.Honest reviews on 12V 26W Dimmable CV DC LED Driver ETL (UL) approved
This driver is great it will work with leading or trailing dimmers. The only problem I had was the cover on the line side had a hard time excepting the thickness of a 14-2 romex wire. I use this driver with tape LED lights mostly with undercabinet & above cabinet accent lighting.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for 12V 26W Dimmable CV DC LED Driver ETL (UL) approved
Bought this LED driver based on the "dimmable" aspect for LED strip lights. I set up a test strip and tried: Leviton Touch and Mural dimmers, Lutron magnetic and electronic LV Maestro dimmers, all without successfully dimming the LED strip. I don't think I can recommend this product to be controllable with any triac dimmer. YMMVDiscount Stanley 32749 10-LED Motion Light, White

Would have gotten 5 stars except for.. the switch is UNDERNEATH the light, so you have to take off the light from it's attached spot to get to the switch. It defeats the purpose.
Light is better than expected (Keep in mind it's a small light), Velcro strips are more than adequate bonus, and good quality.
But the switch placement... Good job, make it obsolete Dept.!

The 15-Pack, 20 Watt Bi-Pin Halogen Light Bulb, 12 Volt, G4 Base, 20 Watt has worked out great. The bulbs work as good as higher price bulbs, and have been working for several months. Each bulb comes in it's own box with plastic. I plan to purchase more of these bulbs in the future. These seem to go out a lot. They last for a little while and I guess for the price it is ok.

Don't get tricked by anything that says "large" . "Large" is relative to the person's expectation. I wouldn't say this is "large". But I knew what I was getting because I read the dimensions. However, someone might get this and be disappointed just because they were expecting something much bigger. I always check product information for specific size. If it does not list the size in the item description, I wouldn't take any chances. I think it's very duplicitous when companies do this.
That said, this was exactly what I ordered, expected, and received. It was true to the product description. It arrived on the exact expectation date and carefully packaged. The weight is perfect; heavy enough to stay in place outside, but not too heavy that it can't be easily moved. It sits nicely in my fountain in the front yard. And it makes a beautiful feng shui feeling at the front of the house.
I have it on my deck at about eye-level so maybe it doesn't look so ghostly and spooky if it's on the ground or below you, I suppose that is possible.

I am very pleased with this product. It is well build and the solar panel works well, so my little Buddha is nicely illuminated at night. The light is a soft white light that fits the statue well. I was hesitant to put it in my backyard as I have two very big, rambunctious (young) dogs who knock things over, but this statue is build heavy enough that I dared to put it out and it has survived this long. It came with the batteries already in it so all I had to do was take it out of the box and put in in my backyard. My neighbor loves it and will probably buy one as well. The order arrived super fast.Best Deals for Large Buddha Solar Statue Light

A few things: it's great, it's 15 pounds, there's a little button on the bottom to turn on and off the solar power...I ended up turning off the light because honestly when it was lit up it looked ghostly and greenish instead of soft and nice, which was remarked upon several times by others who saw it, it looked like a person at a campfire with a flashlight under their chin telling a scary story:) You can't angle the light so it goes right up the chin. Anyway, I like it anyway and if I could angle the light to make it softer I'd love it even more.I have it on my deck at about eye-level so maybe it doesn't look so ghostly and spooky if it's on the ground or below you, I suppose that is possible.

I like this light, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. I knew it was going to be a toss-up, but I was hoping it would be more green like the picture, instead is is mostly blue with very little green spots. I actually haven't hung it yet, it's been in the box for a couple months while we're remodeling so I can't comment on the assembly or functionality of it yet. I would probably not suggest buying a light like this online, you really need to see it in person... unless the color really doesn't matter to you. I'll have to find another use for it, as I don't think it's going to work well with my kitchen as I had previously planned.
The color of the glass is very nice.
As others have noted, this is art glass which results in many variations. However, like another reviewer, the one I received is primarily blue. The amount of yellow is not enough to create as much green as shown in the picture. I really wanted more green and yellow emphasis. Also the colors are more elongated dots and not the long swirls shown in the picture.
Many pendant lights look very different when lit and some may want that, but this light is very similar whether lighted or not and I like that.
It is well made and as easy to install as any pendant light. Note the size of light you need. I think this would be too large over a sink, but is just fine as a single light over my round breakfast table. It measures about 9 inches tall by 5 inches in diameter.
For my purpose, it works just fine and I am happy. However, if you are the least bit picky, need to match several lights or don't have a good feel for size, go to a brick and mortar store to find exactly what you want and buy there.
When I purchased it was reduced to $35, which was a bargain and made my quibbles about color less important.

It is really too big for hanging over a kitchen sink. And if you have to shorten the lenght, the three wires are all the same color. This makes it difficult to tell which is the ground wire without trial and error. The color of the glass is very nice.

First off Hue is expensive and not something anybody really needs. However, it's one of those things that has a high cool factor and if your into gadgets whats $200 bucks. I am a gadget guy and had the $200 so I went for it. Hue arrived via Amazon, so he was right on time and a day early. I couldn't wait to get him out of the box and give him a test run. It was incredibly easy to set up. I mean really easy, so don't worry about that. First download the app on to your Ipad or Iphone from the Apple App Store. Secondly plug the Hue Bridge into your router with the included ethernet cable (you need an open port on your router) and screw the pricey bulbs into a fixture. Then push the button on the Hue Bridge and grab your device and start making rainbow colored rooms. Everything worked perfectly the first time, the router found the bulds and the app controlled the whole thing. Really very cool, it worked exactly as it should.
One other thing about Hue, it does not work with Dimmer switches. Hue has a built in dimmer system, so you need to switch out the dimmer switches or keep them on full power all the time. That is easier said than done as by habit you turn the lights off when leaving a room. Not having the switch turned on makes the light bulbs not respond, So you need to have all the lights switched on with power flowing. Hue then controls the power to the lights via the bulbs,
Living with HUE
Your whole life you are conditioned to turn off lights when you exit the room. You just flip the switch and its done. Same thing for turning on the lights, its easy and simple. Hue changes this simple everyday thing into a much more complicated process. To turn on or off the lights you must first locate your phone or iPad wherever you laid it down or worse someone else takes it away to another room. Once you find your Ipad/Iphone,. enter your lock code and then find the Hue App open it and then look for the turn off lights button. This drives me nuts, it be no problem if you had an Ipad at every light switch. This is the one thing that I think makes Hue totally not practical for anyone but a single person living alone. Imagine hunting down the iPad that your kid took upstairs etc etc.
This issue changed the relationship i thought I would have with Hue. I thought, this would be the future of lighting, sit back adjust the lights and live in a full spectrum of mood altering colors.
Reality is Hue traps you in a room where you can't turn on or off the lights without locating your phone! I was ready to kick Hue out of my house as he was not what I thought he would be. Then it dawned on my I was expecting to much of Hue, especially in my house. Hue became an expensive accent light here and there. We put him in some cheap spot light fixtures and move him around the house. I would take him into the bedroom and he would turn it into the glowing red hot love volcano. On Sundays, we turn the kitchen lime green and have breakfast on Mars, the kids love it! You can have a lot of fun with Hue just use your imagination.
Hue works great and it is really cool. Lots of wow factor, just think about the practicality of Hue in your home. For us it went from a serious lighting system to basically a toy we really enjoy. For my family, Hue has been great, it has brought us some fun times and it creates a lot of joy and laughter. What else could you want from any product.
I hope that my experience with Hue helps you understand the product better, it's uses and it's limitations. Thanks for reading.
Update Sep 2013: We added the Hue LightStrip over the fireplace, it's great at lighting the wall only. Hue app as of 1.4 now syncs scene timers on the Hue app between IOS devices.
Here's how we use them:
* Control lighting color/intensity for activities like watching TV (blue), entertaining (purple), cooking (various colors), etc.
* Automatically turn on Living Room (med/blue) and kitchen night lights (low purple) at 8:30 , bedroom night light at 11:00 (red). They all turn off 1:00am if we forget.
* No need to go to the wall dimmer to adjust lights as the evening changes, the iPad is also our universal remote (Roomie, which supports Hue) and our cordless phone (Bria) so one device controls everything.
* From bed, turn all the lights off with one tap, no more "who's getting up to turn off the lights".
* Multiple bulbs in a room on the same circuit are dimmed independently, much better than a single wall dimmer! Different areas of a room (doorway vs seating vs TV area) can have different intensities or colors. We have a deck with 2 bulbs, one near the door is brighter than one near seating.
* Use them as night lights since the bulbs maximum power draw is only 8.5 watts. When set low they draw about as much as a normal nitelight, 3-4 watts.
* Control lights remotely from iPhones wherever we are. Turning them on for security or our pets, or off when we forgot.
* The geofencing feature turned on the lights as we drove into the driveway, even with the Hue app closed!
* If there is an intruder we can turn any/all lights on from bed using iPads or iPhones which are always at arms reach.
* We replaced our dimmers ($45-60 each) and simplified wall wiring.
* My wife got the "disco" ball she always wanted in the kitchen (don't ask), but better, hue has strobe and other effects such as changing to music with additional apps.
BASICS
The bulbs replace a convention light bulb. They can display a range of colors and intensities, all controlled from an iPad, iPhone or iPod. I was very concerned to control something as critical as lights via wifi. I did not want to deal with issues for something that should always just work. Well, 3 months later and there have been no issues at all, even after power failures timers work perfectly.
OPERATION
The bulbs must have full AC power, they cannot be dimmed via wall dimmers. When powered off then on they are white, the Hue app controls everything after they are on. You should always leave the wall switch on for most or all indoor bulbs. However, there may cases where you want them powered off then on with a wall switch. For instance, we use an iPad to control on/off of all 5 inside bulbs, but 3 bulbs on 2 outside decks are turned on/off via wall switches while iPad controls their colors, etc. ISSUE: We had problems with electronic dimmers even when set full on that required us to change them to simple switches. You have to learn not to turn off the lights when leaving a room, this is a hard habit to break.
If you plan to install Hue bulbs in multiple rooms it helps a LOT if you have app devices in different rooms, then you can control any light in the house from any room with an app device. This makes a huge difference because without them you must locate your app device to change a light. Of course you could carry the device while in the house but most people don't want to do that. We were lucky to already have multiple iPads since we use them as A/V remote controllers and cordless phones.
BRIGHTNESS
We were surprised that when set to bright white they look brighter than 60 watt bulbs. The 3 in the kitchen are more than enough for normal activity but there are also spotlights over the sink and stove. Our decks are now much brighter than before.
SETUP
Initial setup is very simple and quick, we had it up and running in about 6 minutes, deciding what you want and customizing the first three bulbs may take 10-15 minutes. Here are the steps:
1. Download and install the Hue app on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch from the iTunes App store, it's free.
2. Plug in the Hue Bridge into an ethernet connection with the included or other cable, No Wifi on the bridge. Most people will connect to a router but other devices connected to the router will work. In my case the Bridge is connected to an Airport Extreme in bridge mode which is connected to an ethernet switch on the other side of the house which is connected to a Zyxel router connected to DSL. If all that works with no changes then most of you should be fine.
3. Plug the Hue Bridge in the wall for power.
4. Once the bridge is active, screw one to more bulbs into sockets and power them up.
5. This step is needed for EACH iPad, etc. that has the Hue app installed: Start the app, then push the button on the Hue bridge.
6. Play with colors and intensities.
To allow syncing of scenes (you will learn them easily) between app devices (iPads, etc.) OR use geofencing (see caveat below) which will turn lights on as you get close to home (or auto turn them off as you leave) you must:
7. Setup a free ID at the meethue.com web site.
8. Go to the Hue app settings and login to the meet hue site. You can leave the app logged on all the time.
COST
They can save energy when used as timed night lights, and eliminate the need to install dimmers.
CAVEATS:
* Geofencing only works with 1 device, you can't have 2 iPhones using geofencing at the same time. Hopefully, this will be fixed.
* The Hue app groups bulbs into "scenes" for 1 click operation, but multiple scenes for a room can't be grouped together into a folder to simplify organization. Customizing "scenes" is a little cumbersome and could be easier, but we picked it up quickly.
* Hue can't replace all lighting because there are no hardware controls for them, some rooms are impractical to run from an app like a closet, bathroom, etc. I would love Philips to make a wall mounted a/c powered controller.
* Update Sep 2013: Syncing now updates scene timer settings between multiple IOS devices.
After only a month we are sold on this technology and will never go back, this is the future of lighting. We purchased ours at Apple stores since it was easy to bring back quickly if we didn't like them.
Another thing to mention is that the lights can either be turned on wirelessly or by a conventional switch. This is great if you want to put these in your overhead fixtures, but still want the convenience of switching them on and off without your phone handy -yet still have the ability to change their colors when you do. Extremely handy for lamps, especially those in different rooms, or areas of your home. And because they work remotely, you can check the app to make sure you didn't leave the lights on when you're away.
Don't listen to the poor reviews about them being to expensive, or how easy it would be to do it yourself. The ease and quality of this product alone makes the purchase worth the price. Controlling the lighting from multiple devices is a breeze, and being LED technology, these bulbs should last for well over 50 years. If you like gadgets and can afford this product, the hours of fun you will have will completely out weigh the price tag.
One other thing about Hue, it does not work with Dimmer switches. Hue has a built in dimmer system, so you need to switch out the dimmer switches or keep them on full power all the time. That is easier said than done as by habit you turn the lights off when leaving a room. At first, the only way to I could justify this $200 item for gadget junkies is to consider it a new fun "toy". Well, they are a TON OF FUN, especially if you add a couple of extra Hue apps. People love them and most buy their own set soon. However we quickly realized these are also enhancements to our home which are totally worth the price. Our expectations were exceeded and in 3 weeks we went from the 3 pack starter kit to 8 bulbs, yes 5 more bulbs at $60 each and we are totally happy with them.Update Sep 2013: We added the Hue LightStrip over the fireplace, it's great at lighting the wall only.

$200 bucks for 3 light bulbs? Hmmm... Well, all I can say is that if you are a techie and enjoy adjusting your environment (music, lighting, climate, etc) this is your gadget. One of the few things I have purchased that my wife is learning to use because she likes the impacts. The bulb over our infant in the kitchen gets a warm mellow glow while the 3 over her head get full blast energize. We have no regrets about buying the starter pack and 3 additional bulbs. It is not a need but if you can toss $300 bucks to the pile that is for having fun in life get them. They perform well, software is great and got it working on three phones without issue. Even adding the extra bulbs was easy. Most fun I've had since the iPad came out.Honest reviews on Philips 431643 Hue Personal Wireless Lighting, Starter Pack
I received this product from my girlfriend for Christmas, and I have to say that it is the most reliable wifi enabled device I own. Since we've installed them, we have had zero issues with the connectivity. Another nice aspect of the design is that you can control them from your computer as well. You can also get involved in the Phillips Hue community, and sample other members' scenes, or even share your own. It's incredibly easy to install.Another thing to mention is that the lights can either be turned on wirelessly or by a conventional switch.
