I bought both the original and the paperback version as gifts for my wife. She was very dissatisfied with both as the light they provide is marred by vertical shadows across the page which she found distracting. Evidently not everyone is bothered by these shadows, based on the positive reviews and the fact that in calling the manufacturer with the problem, I was told that that is how they worked and my only recourse was returning them to the place I bought them.Since the packages had been opened, Amazon charged a steep re-stocking fee plus shipping and handling charges. I ended up paying about 40% of the price of the items for the total unstatisfactory experience.
I strongly recommend that you buy this item where you can try it first.
Best Deals for LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight
I bought this with joyful anticipation. I got home, placed new batteries in the wedge, lowered the lights, and settled in bed expecting a nice evening reading. The first thing I noticed was that my light wasn't even. The lighting across my page was "wavy"; light and darker bands emanating from each bulb, much like the ripple from dropping a pebble in a pond. They weren't moving, but the alteration in light really made reading difficult. I don't know if this is a "bad" wedge, but other factors are going to keep me from replacing it with another one. The main factor is comfort. If you like to read laying down, you will find it difficult to hold the wedge in place over the page. You will also find it cumbersome to always position it over EVERY page. With a typical book light, you simply attach the light to the front or back of the book and never have to really deal with the light again. With this light, you have to make it part of your reading experience. Sure, it looks cool, but who am I trying to impress? I can't wait for the day they develop a flat, handheld monitor that is appealing and as easy on the eyes as paper. Then my continual search for a quality book light will end.Honest reviews on LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight
I normally don't write reviews because others do a good job of it. So why should I interfere? I chose to write this review because I think this should be heard by the creator and consumer alike. The wedge design is unique and attractive. Even so, it is fragile and needs to be protected when transporting it. I think that it should have come with a velvet or similar type protector pouch or bag. I understand that these can be purchased separately but that isn't exactly a luxury optional accessory and therefore shouldn't have to be purchased in that manner.
Some aspects of the lightwedge need improvement or redesign. I know that some people have light sensitive significant others and for that reason want this product because it doesn't have a lot of stray light. The lightwedge has stray light streaming out of the edges of the clear plastic. If your reading the page on the right/left of the book the lightwedge sits on that page you're reading. So you have a 50% chance out of 2 pages that your pointing the light right at him/her. This could be fixed if the creator would just put a strip of light absorbing or reflecting material on the edge or they could just "frost it" to disperse the light a little. My other complaint is a black hole located around the halfway point near the battery and light compartment. This black hole could be corrected by simply installing a 3rd led light in the middle of the unit. This would probably not significantly affect the life of the battery noticeable by the user and would make reading easier for the eyes instead of dilating the iris and making me think that reading in the dark is wrong and this is my punishment. My third complaint has to do with the lighting as well. Why are there ripples in the light? I know some cheap leds produce a ring of focused light with noticeable dark spots but this looks like it was intended by the makers but why? If it is needed for functionality then could they just tune it down a notch or smooth out those ripples so it doesn't look like I'm reading through a pane of machined glass?
I gave 3 out of 5 stars because of the defects and lack of the, what I feel was necessary, travel bag. I would consider buying this again in the future if it was upgraded with my and other improvements applied.
