I've only had this for 2 weeks but i'm quite satisfied with the end result. I've read the reviews on other security lights being too sensitive and ect...but like most, you still have to tinker with it to find the proper sensitivity level you will need.

Upon opening the box, i was glad that most of the unit was made out of metal and not plastic so you know it could withstand the different weather elements. Installing it was very simple and the instructions were clear.

The sensitivity level is easily adjusted by turning a rotary disc on the bottom of the unit ranging from min to max to a boost. I find the boost very sensitve as i could never find the proper setting to suit my needs so i keep it on max. You can also adjust the sensor eye to aim more left, right, down or up depending on which area you want to cover the most. And don't forget, it is 240 degrees of coverage compared to 180 others offer.

There are 3 pre-programmed timers for which this unit will stay on upon sensoring motion. 1, 5 and 20 minutes. I have set mine for 1 minute which is more than enough time to scare someone way from your property. Remember, depending on the wattages of your bulbs which are not included, you don't want to increase your electric bill either. I found 240 total watts to be sufficient for me and it does include protective metal lamp covers.

The unit also has a timed low-level lighting for anyone who wishes to have it on for 3 hrs, 6 hrs or dusk to dawn but as soon as motion is detected, they're on high. I probably won't ever use this as it defeats the purpose of scaring someone off your property as in my case, people who walk their dogs but don't clean up behind them.

Overall, you'll be satisfied with this unit as long as you have some patience while finding your desired sensitivity setting. I can't tell you how many times i had to go out in the middle of the night to adjust it to where i was satisfied.

**UPDATE** (5-10-08)

Had the first windy day since acquiring the unit and i'm going to drop a star from the rating because i could not adjust the sensitivity level to the point where the light would shut off. Not sure if it was sensing bug activity around the sensor or if it was the wind but it got to the point where i had to shut it down from the inside and try to adjust it the next day. This is unacceptable in my book.

"I purchased three of these units and within one year two of the three had failed. The flood lights do not come on when sensing motion at night, but the motion detector light indicates motion is sensed. The flood lights will come on in the test mode but won't come on in normal mode. I believe the daylight sensor has gone bad and the units cannot tell that nightime has come. I was not able to locate a web site for this company for support or warranty information."

For the price this item is unbeatable.

It really has as a wide and long detection range as advertised and it worked pretty reliably since i've installed it more than a month ago.

The only one note i would make is that the manual does not stress enough the importance of pointing the light beams (or even their reflections) away from anywhere close to the motion detection sensor. I've found that out at my expenses cause a reflection of the light on the wall kept setting the motion detection off and the whole thing would keep flashing like an emergency light until i've figured that one out and solved the problem just by pointing the light on a different direction.

Honest reviews on Heath Zenith SL-5318-WH-E 240-Watt Motion-Sensing Shielded

I installed this light to replace a broken light fixture. It installed fairly easily, and with no help needed. I was able to aim the lights where I wanted them, but getting the sensor to recognize movement properly was a trick.

I have it mounted about 12 ft high on my garage, and it does not seem to see me until I'm about 10 feet in front of it. Since my driveway is about 250 feet long, that leaves me with a LOT of darkness before the stupid thing comes on. By the time I'm that close, I think I could make it the last 10 ft without it. Mostly, I just wanted help with snow-blowing in the dark, but it's pretty useless for that. Oh, well, it does light up well when it's on, but the sensor is lacking.

UPDATE: 12-20-2011

OK, just getting around to the update. I have shut the thing off for a few months now, because it worked OK at first, but then it kept coming on at night, presumably over every leaf blowing by in the fall. I say presumably, because eventually, it was on more than off, and keeping us up at night. Then one night it simply started to strobe, and that was it. It's off now, and has been off for months. Nothing is worth the disco inferno that's going on out there every night, and I'm too lazy to take it back down and replace it.

I have purchased two motion sensor lights that were made by Heath/Zenith. Both were faulty. The first one only worked for a short period of time before it died.

and the second one never did work correctly. It would come on and stay on. Not only during the night. But it would burn all day long too. By the time you figure out the light doesn't work, you have spent hours of your time just trying to trouble shoot the problems.

Fool me once, shame on YOU. Fool me twice, shame on ME.
