After reading the 2 previous reviews I wasn't expecting much light output from the bulb, so I wasn't really disappointed. The light output is about that of the coleman battery powered camping lanterns, which is to say not bright but "bright enough" when you really need light. While it is somewhat dispersed the light mostly seems to shine more or less straight out the top of the bulb, and so would make an excellent choice for a directed reading lamp. I will use it in my bedside table lamp since I really only need to see well enough to get dressed in the morning. You'd probably need 2 or 3 such bulbs to adequately light a small room such as a bathroom if it is going to be your main lighting source and not just an accent light. While perfect for "off grid" homes where extreme measures of conserving energy are crucial, the price would have to come down to make sense for most of you.

I have a fairly old Sears chain garage door opener that was killing light bulbs about once/week. This light is immune (so far) to the vibration.

Even though this is very dim (60 lumens versus 1085 lumens in a 75 watt bulb), it at least puts some light in the garage until my other automatic lights go on when I get out of the car.

***1+ year update: Still hasn't burned out!

***5 year update: It is still working five years later. The garage door opener is still working too. The price of this bulb has really come down.

I got this for christmas. I thought to put it in my lamp in my room, but it is not bright enough for that. I'd say it is about like a 40 watt bulb, except that it doesn't shine all over the place, just in front of itself. It's probably best for places you want a weird dim light on all the time. For that application, I would say this is the perfect bulb.

Please note that this is a very dim bulb. I purchased Crane lights (including this one)about two years ago. Have not purchased any more since. It is NOT bright enough for reading. This bulb will work well as a porch light or such thing, but LIGHT IS VERY BLUE.

A high quality globe style LED bulb good enough for reading will cost about $40 $50.00. If used a lot, it will pay for itself in a few years. If not used a lot, it will likely outlast you on this earth if you don't break it (say by knocking a lamp over).

NEVER buy an LED bulb without knowing color. 3,000 3,500 K is warm white (yellowish, usually favored for residential interior), 4,000 4,500 K is white tending to blue (good for office work, production line or warehouse, security light), 5,000 to 6,000 K is bluish (security light? I would avoid 6,000). The higher colors also tend to have 10% or so higher lumens outputs for same wattage in LED bulbs.

At present (February, 2010) LED bulbs produce about 35 lumens per watt, with light wanting to be projected in a linear fashion. A 65-watt par 30 incandescent light bulb produces about 700 lumens projected in a diffuse fashion.

I bought 2 of these at a very bargain price. Both failed to turn on after only a couple of weeks. LEDs are supposed to last around 100,000 hours. So, it maybe not the LEDs but the way it was manufactured. It also not very bright for such a number of LEDs in it.
