First of all, I'm not an environmentalist. I could care less about whether these are better for the environment or not. I want you to know that that was not a factor in my choosing of these lights.

Why I chose Sylvania LEDs:

I chose these lights because they are very bright and the color is a nice soft true 3000k. Compact Fluorescent lights make me feel like I am at the office. Even with the 2700k bulbs the light just seems cold and uninviting. I am also a big fan of LED technology. They are brighter and run much cooler than their halogen counterparts. Plus you can leave them on all day without worrying about running up your power bill. There are other options to choose from in recessed LED lighting. I chose Sylvania because I believe they are a reputable company that will stand behind their product.

Installation:

They are very easy to install and include their own trim ring. There is a bulb base with wires coming out of it and a plug on the end of the wires. That plug goes into the rear of the LED light. AFTER VERIFYING THAT THE POWER IS OFF, Simply screw the bulb base into place, Plug in the LED, and Push the LED into the light. It has metal clips that engage and hold it securely into place. If you ever need to remove the light, you will need to twist it back and forth slightly as you pull it out.

Pricing:

As I replace old lighting in my house with recessed, I'm buying these lights for about $50 as opposed to buying the recessed lights manufacturer's rings plus a light bulb for about $30. You can pick these lights up for about $40 + tax at the big box stores if you catch a good sale. However, I live about 1 hour away from the nearest big box store so its worth it for me just to order them from amazon. Prime eligible, no tax, no gas and no driving is hard to beat. I expect the pricing on these lights will drop significantly over the next couple of years since the technology is evolving so quickly.

Reliability:

I have purchased 16 of these 4" lights and their 6" counterparts over the last two years and every single one of them worked right out of the box and continues to work well. The ones I have in my kitchen have been on almost all of the time for the last 2 years. I fully expect these to achieve their advertised long lifetime.

Light Pattern:

The pattern from these lights tends to be more like a PAR 30 Flood than a PAR 30 Spot. That is perfect for me because I only have 8' ceilings in my house. If you have much taller ceilings, or are looking for very concentrated light, you may consider sticking with halogen spot lights or trying to find an LED with a sharper focus reflector and a clear lens.

Conclusion:

Overall, this is a wonderful product and I would highly recommend these to anyone wanting modern bright lighting that doesn't make you feel like you are at the office. I would buy them from Amazon because of their exceptional customer service, free two day shipping for prime members, and the savings of not having to pay sales tax.

Wrong again. My wife wanted these for a bathroom remodel. I wasn't so sure. She was right, but she will never see this. Seems to be solid build quality. Installed into Halo 4" remodel can. Gives off bright light with nice color. Very easy to install, but fits so tightly that it may be difficult to remove if ever needed. Three of them provide ample ambient light for small (5 X 12) bathroom. Slight delay after switching. Added dimmer which works fine, although light won't come on until you reach about 15 20% of power. At my age, this is practically a lifetime bulb. Now, if I can just figure a way to get someone to install one of these in the sixteen foot ceiling above my fireplace, I'd be set.

I'm remodeling my kitchen with eleven of these LEDs. I had a suspended wood-framed ceiling with the ubiquitous 2'x2' translucent plastic panels hiding eight 4' 40w fluorescent tubes, straight out of the 1980s. I rarely could get all eight tubes to be fully functional at one time, and it looked tired, tacky and outdated. I replaced the fluorescents, cut 2'x2' sheetrock panels, painted them and drilled the 4" holes as directed. I then wired in each of the can kits and temporarily used incandescent and spiral fluorescent bulbs until I can afford to buy all eleven LEDs. The LED is clean, looks great, gives excellent light output, and I'm looking forward to completing the project this fall. It is an investment, but I know it will pay off both in improved electrical bills and a phenomenal improvement in the looks of the kitchen. I shopped around quite a bit to find the right product for this particular use, and this is it!

Bought several for a remodel in my bedroom. The lights are nice and bright but even with the recommended dimmer they simply buzz too much for lighting a bedroom. I have three of these in my bath with a straight wall switch and no buzz.
