I purchased this lantern and I waited until I actually used it for the purpose of emergency lighting before submitting a review. I just survived the Blizzard of 2010 in Washington DC with no electricity for three days. This lantern was charged up and ready to go before the storm, and was able to get us through the three days of power outage with about 3 -5 hours per night of judicious use. This lantern works best if hung above eye level as the LED light is probably too bright for most people. However, this lantern gives off sufficient light for reading at night with no eye strain. This is a huge plus when the only entertainment during a blizzard with no electricity is a good book! I used night light, lo and hi settings, and I found that there was significant changes in illumination from setting to setting. The power cable and car charging unit can be stored inside of the lantern base. I leave mine plugged into the wall outlet for on-demand lighting when needed. I particularly like the car charger capability, although I have not yet had occasion to use it. Overall, great product for the intended use of emergency lighting in the home or light for the campsite.

At 145 Lumens, this is not a particulalry bright lamp, especially given it's size. A very short 10 hour life (on high) is also poor. Other less expensive Coleman battery lanterns offer comparable brightness and 40 hour life expectancy. Coleman chiseled on the NiCd pack in tis thing and it shows. Even more surprising is the claim in the owners manual that the light may not illuminate at temperatures below 20 degF? What's with this limit?

So, if you want to buy Coleman, I'd suggest the 4D collapsible LED Lantern at $25. If you want good performance, I like the smaller Brunton Polaris.

I like that it's rechargeable (no wasting batteries). It comes with 2 chargers (wall and car) and they fit in a compartment in the bottom. It is even cuter and more stylish in person than the picture. The light is good, and has 3 settings (high, medium and low). I like the LED... it should be energy-efficient and last a long time. The light beam is white in color... I think it's worth the price. I am very happy with this purchase!

This lantern got a great deal of use when we had a blackout for 3 days (storm took out a pole). It was great in keeping the light on for simple tasks through out the home. One slight problem is that it is hard on the eyes if it is near the eyes. When in the middle of the table one cannot help but occassionaly look up at the latern the LEDs can be too bright. We are use to the previous model with a flourecent bulb or two. Other than that it is easy to recharge and have ready for the next emergency. Amazon was quick to deliver the product.

I bought the predecessor to this lantern and it has several great features and few shortcomings, however if you are looking for an LED lantern that well compete with the brightness of a propane lantern this is not the solution you are seeking, nor do you want to take it backpacking, but there are several reasons why one would purchase this lantern.

FEATURES

Light: This lantern used an LED light which produces a nice soft light that lasts and lasts. It is hash when looking directly at it, but the purpose of the lantern is to illuminate what one is looking at.

Settings: The power switch has four settings off, nightlight, low, and high.

Standby Lighting: The lantern also has a standby setting. The standby setting turns the lantern on if 1) one of the charging cords has been plugged into the lantern, 2) the lantern is set in the nightlight or low setting 3) the power is interrupted and 4) the battery is charged.

Charging: This lantern comes with a standard plug-transformer combo as well as a cord that connects to an automobiles cigarette lighter receptacle. Both of the cables can be simultaneously stored in a compartment accessed from the bottom side of the lantern.

PERFORMANCE & BENEFITS

Lighting: Depending on one's battery conservation practices this lantern's charge can last a longtime. Once we had family come visit for a week, and one of my nephews was nervous about the dark so I set this lantern in the hallway on the nightlight setting. I turned the lantern on when I finally made it to bed then off at dawn and the lantern lasted the entire week without needing a charge. (It was summer, so the light was on about 9-10 hours less, over the week, than it would be during the winter.)

Battery Performance: How long the battery last is dependent on how kind you are to the battery, but if you follow the initial charging instructions before using the lantern, then before each use you completely charge the battery the lantern will probable last an entire camping trip, given you are out less than a week and you are reasonably frugal with the lantern use. (If not you can always use the car-charger cord.) The battery takes about six to eight hours to charge. (FOLLOW UP October 24, 2012: So this lantern was left on in the night light mode for over a week. Although the light was dim it was still producing enough light to see by.)

Fewer Bugs!: Another bonus about using this LED lantern is that most insects are unable to perceive the light it produces; therefore you have to deal with fewer bugs. I for one like to use this lantern when cooking after sunset, or playing a card game at night or going other "places" where I prefer not to attract bugs.

Safety: For obvious reasons I prefer using this lantern inside a tent. It produces a nice soft light without the dangers of a burning the whole thing down. One other thing is that my kids can handle it and I don't need to worry about burns, scalds, or other accidents only children can conceive in their adventuresome minds.

Toughness: I wouldn't expect this lantern to survive a 12 foot drop (Don't ask me why I picked 12 feet. I'm just saying it's not indestructible), but since the lantern does not need to withstand high heat it has been built to be more rugged than a lantern sporting a glass globe. In other words I don't mind it if I see a four-year-old carrying it around.

CONCLUSION

Propane lanterns are great and they have their place, but having this LED lantern as part of your camping or emergency supplies is smart. Especially if you see the benefits of not attracting insects, putting a flame inside your tent, have a young child who really wants a big light nearby, or having in-home, standby, long-lasting light in case of a power failure.
