This light comes with a set of Lithium Ion rechargable batteries and a charger. It drains a little over an amp at full power. Estimated at 4 hrs, and 0.2 amps on low, estimated at 20 hrs. It is very bright and has a variable focus beam. When it is focused on a small point, the light will be square which is the shape of the emitter. This is the nature of modern LED lights with a focused beam. On wide, the light is circular and very even with a sharp edge. Even on low it's very usable for reading and walking. On high it's bright enough to ride a bike with. For the price, this is a great light. THe head lamp seems well built, and the pivot mechanism seems much stronger than some of the other Chinese head lamps. The only down side of this light is that if the batteries are low, you can't swap in AA's I recomend buying a spare set and keeping them charged for spares. Be sure to get ones with a protection circuit as there is no low voltage cut in the light. If Lithium Ion cells drop under 3v, they will be damaged. The cells supplied are fine, they are ultrafire LC ZY 18650's and have protection circuts. I have not run the light long enough to see if heat builds up on high. I will post an update if any problems develop.

Update one: The low level setting has quite a bit of strobe flicker. Nearly all LED lights use an ocilating power signal to lower the intensity. This is the most efficent way to lower the drain and keep the output looking as bright as possible. Very high end lights use a very high speed rate which can't be seen normally. This light is a bit slow, so rain drops appear as a series of dashes and ,if there is fast motion, it will look a little jagged. You can't see the flicker when looking at the light, and for normal walking, reading, it's not a big deal, but it is a little annoying in the rain. On high power there is no flicker. Still like the light though. The lipo rechargable setup will save a lot of $$ on batteries compared to the 4 AA version also sold.

I tried using this as a headlight for fine detailed work. The light fades over time, but was bright at the onset.
