We needed a replacement for a bulb over our bathroom sink area after a "long lasting" CFL died after less than two years (we've had incandescents last longer). We needed something cool (not enough air circulation in the summer, and ten bulbs can put out a lot of heat if they're all incandescents) that can be controlled by a dimmer (because ten bulbs put out a lot of light, and we don't usually need that much). Not only are these quite controllable via rheostat, they maintain their color even at the low end of the brightness scale (whereas incandescents get very yellow, almost orange, when the voltage drops). We liked the initial results so much we replaced the CFLs with LEDs and kept the incandescents for show (not fully screwed in), with four LEDs handling the light load we need with very little heat (the incandescents get too hot to handle with bare hands after a fraction of a minute; the CFLs are very warm but manageable with bare hands; the LEDs are barely noticeable as "warm"). Just with the price was lower -so what else is new?
