I got sick of my CFL kitchen lights this winter. When I flicked the switch, it was ridiculously dim in there until the bulbs warmed up. The bulbs never lasted as long as advertised, either. When I spotted a good sale on these bulbs at my local big box hardware store, I bought these bulbs and replaced the six ceiling lights. I'm thrilled.

You'll note a split-second delay after you flick the switch, but then the lights come on at full strength. These 75-watt equivalent bulbs have a 2700 Kelvin color rating, with the result that you have a bright, but warm light. I dithered a long time between these bulbs and the 65-watt equivalent bulbs (Philips 423798 13-Watt BR30 Indoor Flood LED Light Bulb, Dimmable) but I'm glad I went with these for the kitchen.

These bulbs are quite a bit larger than the BR30 bulbs. This bulb is 5 inches in diameter (the 40 in the product description means 40 eighths of an inch, so 8/40=5 inches), whereas the BR30 is 3.75 inches in diameter (8/30=3.75). This is also a longer bulb. This one is 6.5 inches long, whereas the BR30 is 5.1 inches. If you're putting this in a can fixture, you'll want to measure to see how it will fit in your cans. For me, this bulb stuck out a little beyond the can, but the edge detailing on the bulb made it look fine.

Many states have special incentives for purchasing CFLs and LEDs, so it's worth checking prices at your local stores before buying online.

If you have had problems with CFL lights and your choice of paint colors, then this is the light bulb for you. We painted our walls a warm yellow color back when we used the incandescent lights. When we stuck the CFLs in, my warm yellow turned an awful yellowish-greenish hue. The CFLs were never truly dimmable and took forever to light up. I tried multiple brands and was never happy with the results. I picked the least offensive shade of greenish-yellow and dealt with it.

I picked one of these up on a whim just to see what kind of difference LED would make. The change was so drastic that I went right back to the local big box store to pick up enough to finish the rest of the room. The room is that nice cozy warm yellow again. They also turn right on and dim like you would expect them to.

They are a little pricy, but I feel that they are worth it for color issues alone. And if they truly last 20+ years, even better.

These lights are good quality and last forever. The only downside is that they are pricier than the normal type bulbs. The good thing is that they dont contain mercury and are easier to dispose of than the other energy saving bulbs. The only word of caution here is with the plastic housing around this bulb may not allow you to fit into some of the light fittings as I recently discovered.

These bulbs are the same as the 14W "Aero-flex" bulbs even though indicate a 0.5 watt difference.

They are brighter (75 watt equivalent) 800 lumens than the 60 watt incandescent bulbs (650 lumens?) I replaced which may be good and bad.

I wish they would lower the wattage and lumens in these a little bit more so the rooms where I have four to six cans are not so bright.

They do seem to run cooler so I think they are pretty efficient in that regard heat being an indicator of inefficiency.

If you put multiple of these in a family room with a plasma screen TV, you will probably need to dim them with a dimmer because they are so bright.

I do hope as they phase out more of the incandescent bulbs there are more options as to wattage and brightness in the BR40 size LED bulbs.

They really need to phase out fluorescent bulbs as well to eliminate the mercury we are introducing into the environment upon disposal.

Initially, LED bulbs will cost more but as they become more popular they should come down in price as all semiconductor related products have.

Lastly, these are currently (6/24/1013) very pricey when buying one at a time.

If you have multiple cans, look for the six packs of these as they can reduce the unit price down some to something a little more palpable.

It may costs more upfront but will also save you more on electricity in the long haul of their expected life.

To maximize your return, look where you use lights most often during the day and night (e.g., kitchen, family room, night lights, outdoor lighting) and replace those with LED bulbs to lower your electric bill the most.
