Update: I've changed the rating to 2 stars. After using the lights for a period of time, it must be concluded that these lights have very bad design problem. Our yard solar lights remain illuminated all night, but they have one LED and use an AA sized battery. These stairs lights have 2 LED and use only an AAA sized battery. As a result, they consume energy at twice the rate of the yard lights, but have less than half the energy capacity. The result is a illumination time of only a couple hours at most. These lights should have been designed with 2 AA batteries instead of one AAA battery. With the extra battery capacity, they would have remained lite all night instead of a couple hours. A little extra time can be gained by installing better batteries, but there is really no way around the design limitation imposed by the design that includes only one AAA battery.

So, if you're like me and are comparing the Solar Step Lights 2 Pack to the Sunforce 84507 Solar Dock Light, (Pack of 2) you've come to the right review. I bought both and have them side by side doing their duties in my front yard lighting up a partial shaded garden path.

These two items are nearly identical in shape and construction and have about the same light output and run time which is quite good for lighting a path. I did not take them apart to see if they had different quality components inside. Here are the differences:

The Solar Step Lights 2 Pack version has a brown painted case and the light is somewhat warmer in color (more yellowish)

The Sunforce 84507 Solar Dock Light, (Pack of 2) version has a brushed steel case and the light is somewhat cooler in color (more blueish)

the difference in light color temperature is very small and may vary in each batch of units made, they both use white LEDs.

When deciding on which one to buy, I would say the only discernable difference is the case color.

I was very excited to install four of these lights on back, steep deck steps. They were easy to install and shine a nice bright light. However, the length of time that these lights actually stay on in the night was relatively short for me. They would turn on at dusk and only stay on for a couple of hours. I was hoping to get 4-6 hours of light from them, but I only seem to get two. I don't know if it's the amount of sun they receive during the day to charge, but they seem to get good light and just don't stay on through the night.

These little lights are brighter than I expected. Light up about 6 sq feet of area. My only suggestion; they should come with a simple paper template for the correct alignment of the screw holes. Without one, you have to unscrew the back cover and use it as the template.

I have 2 lights, one on either side of 3 steps on a deck in my yard. They give adequate light to see the steps but are not harsh or too bright. One solar panel faces east and the other west. They get full sun most of the day. They were easy to mount. If it is a sunny day they stay lit almost all night. I have seen them still lit at least until 3 AM. I once noticed, after a particularly dark and gloomy day, that they went out after about 3 hours. Overall I am very pleased and feel they work well for the price.

EDIT AFTER ABOUT 4 MONTHS OF USE-I would now give these 3 stars at most. While the still work, their light duration has shortened substantially. The used to last at least 6 hours after a sunny day. Now they get maybe 3 hours. Seems like they must use very poor quality batteries, so I plan to try to replace them as another reviewer has described and see if I get better use out of them. The batteries really should not be losing their ability to hold a charge so quickly.

EDIT #2Still 3 stars. I replaced the rechargeable batteries with some from the store. First, replacing batteries took some effort, which is especially annoying given the really crappy batteries they came with. Now after about 10 months on these new batteries (and 13 months overall) one has died completely and the other stays lit about 4-5 hours after a very sunny day but much less if the day was overcast. I plan to replace them with this-http://www.amazon.com/Moonrays-95028-Mini-Light-Rectangle/dp/B004GJW6OO/ref=sr_1_9?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1381931431&sr=1-9&keywords=solar+step+lights. I have one of this model for the past year and it is FAR superior in terms of light output and I have yet to replace the battery.
