Granted I have only had them for about a month, but I love these post lights. You are not going to read by the light, but in my mind they are only supposed to provide accent lighting and they do a great job of that. The only thing I cannot speak to is the length of life generally, but they are outstanding so far.

TYPICAL CONCERNS:

How Long To They Stay Lit?: I once got up at 3am and glanced out to see them still shining brightly. People will argue that they stay lit for so long because the batteries are only 1 month old, but the great thing about these posts are they provide access to change the batteries.

Do They Need Full Sun?: I have the caps on my back porch. The back of my house faces directly east (which means they only get sun till around noon) and there is alot of tree cover in my back yard. Three of the caps are out in the open while one is about 5 feet directly under a leaf covered branch overhanging my porch. The three in the open shine brightly all night no matter how cloudy the day is. The one under the branch shines brightly if it is a normal day, but if it is one of those cloudy and gloomy days it must not get any light between the branch and the clouds and it will either not light up or only lights up for an hour or so. For me this is an easy solution because I have wanted to cut the branch anyway, but if you have a HEAVILY tree covered back porch, solar lights might not be for you.

Do The Photocells Go Bad?: I cannot speak for length of life of the photo cells in general, but I can say that they have thus far withstood quite a bit of rain. I read reviews of other brand caps that said that after the first rain a couple of their caps photocells went bad. Mine have been through torrential downpours and have come through just fine. My plan is to wipe them clean with soapy water every now and then.

This product fits nicely on a 6x6 post. Installation is easy and requires only a screwdriver. I'm using these to throw some light onto stairs below the posts. The light is bright enough to make things a little safer for going up and down. Don't expect to be able to read by it, but that's not really what they're for. On a bright summer day, mine charge for approximately 6 hours and the light lasts 6 hours or more (I don't stay up late enough to know how long exactly). I did have one that came without the LED light cover. This was replaced without much hassle but be sure to check them over before you put them on. Overall, completely satisfied with this product and would recommend it.

Let me start off by saying that the day we received our post lights (2) I wanted to write a great review. The package arrive from UPS and I have to say the packing was amazing. In fact it took several moments before I was even aware of what it might contain. (My wife and I both order quite a bit from Amazon, so it could have been one of many items we were expecting. Anyway I digress, the lights were bubble wrapped and packed into a box so well they could have been air dropped to my home and not suffered from the free fall. (They came in an Amazon box so I attribute that detail to Amazon not McFarland.)

The fixtures themselves are very attractive and they mounted in seconds. Still I was excited about the product, packaged great, attractive and easy to install. What's not to like? However I held off my review, there was still one critical test they needed to pass. After all the primary function of a light is to illuminate. Here is where my hopes began to dim.

Now I do understand that these are solar powered and with that my expectations are on the low end. However I did expect something slightly brighter then a candle. I did not expect them to light up my entrance, I live in a rural area and only wanted the post lights to announce the entrance to my driveway, with no street lights this should not be that hard to accomplish. They failed...they are so dim that unless you were actually looking at the lights themselves you could drive past them without even a glance.

On the bright side (okay I couldn't resist) they stay lit all night, and unlike a candle I don't have to clean up wax in the morning.

How could they improve? Add more or brighter LED lamps, and add a second battery to carry the increased power requirement. The fixtures themselves are quite inexpensive. Actually I got them because they were the most expensive available that would fit a 6 x 6 post. So an increase in cost to cover these changes would not frighten me off. McFarland put me on your mailing list, when you come out with something brighter let me know. I hold a flicker of hope, but not for these. I would have to say wait on getting these fixtures, you really won't notice the difference if they are there or not anyhow.

Honest reviews on McFarland Cascade Terratec Solar Post Cap, Copper, Fits 6x6-Inch

I bought these to place on my deck posts. Half were broken upon arrival all were cheap plastic. Solar lighting did not work on most. Would not recommend this product.

The caps looked great but did not perform great. We ordered 4 and 2/4 did not work at all. The remaining 2 did work but were barely lit (no I did not expect very bright light but I also did not expect little to no light at all). Returned all 4 immediately.
