OK, it survived the winter, but this winter was very mild and we barely got any snow. I don't like it anymore than I did before. The light sometimes doesn't come on at dark, though I'm not sure why. This happens about 25% of the time. My house faces nearly due south, and the unit gets plenty of direct sunlight. Maybe the batteries aren't charging, maybe there is something wrong with the electronics, I don't know. It does look very nice when it's working and provides plenty of light. My house numbers are large and oriented vertically, about 24-27 inches. The illumination covers the whole area. I still wish the unit was more sturdy, and the light worked more than 75% of the time. At this price, I still say it's worth 2 stars.

I got one of these for free when ordering house numbers. I had been thinking about buying this particular item, and I am glad that I didn't.
This is one of these products I really want to love, but I can't.
The construction is VERY cheap. The plastic housing is rather flimsy. I was scared as I was mounting the thing that I would drop it. I wouldn't expect this to survive a fall more than three feet without the housing breaking, let alone 12 feet to my stoop. You can adjust the angle of the light, but the teeth that holds the light at a certain angle feels like it could break easily.
Also, the screws holding the housing together were loose. No big deal, but you have to wonder...
It is VERY lightweight, so it's easy to mount.
I was expecting the build quality closer to a GPS mount in an automobile, it's nothing like that.
Anyway, it DOES work. I installed it around 4PM. The light did come on after dark. I didn't check to see if the batteries came charged, but if they didn't, I am impressed. It didn't get any direct sunlight. I was actually suprised by that. It's bright, you can easily read my house numbers from 100 feet away, if not farther, if you have eagle eyes.
I'm just afriad that I am going to have to replace the thing after next spring. If the housing were a tougher plastic, like what your keyboard is made of, I would give it 5-stars. But, I cannot see how this will survive the winter.

The product arrived with defective batteries. I contacted the company, Whitehall Products, and they informed me that "well, you will have to buy new batteries eventually so what is the problem?" I asked to speak with a supervisor and also got no satisfaction. I received one of these as a house warming gift in 2011. At first I loved it. I installed it in the spring of '11 and it worked until the fall. When it failed, I checked that the batteries were charged, they were. After opening the housing and doing more diagnosis, I found that the electronic circuitry had a fault. I could get it to light up if I jumped a couple terminals, but couldn't get it to operate automatically. I believe the light-sensing portion had failed (to turn it on when dark enough). Thought to myself, no big deal, I'll just get another one...this thing can't be worth more than 10 bucks, right? Wrong!When I found it here at Amazon, I was shocked. 40 bucks...really? Wow...what a rip-off. I'd give $10, but for something I'm figuring on having to replace every year, $40 is way too much. This thing should last at least 3-5 years, not 3-5 months.

Ordered 4 lights all worked fine after charging and I was very pleased. 2 to 3 weeks later 2 of the lights began to go out halfway through the night. A week later one of the others does not go on at all. All of the lights receive full sun for at least 8 hours. Very nice product, love the lighting that it provides when it works but 1 out of 4 and counting is not a good record. All of the advertising regarding the reliability and long-life of the battery and led lighting had me believing that this product would provide relatively carefree service for a long time. Apparently not.ok...need to give credit where credit is due. Had a very good experience dealing with manufacturer. They were very pleasant and helpful. On first contact they told me what steps I could take to possibly fix problems. When this did not work they sent me replacement units which showed up at my door in a matter of days. Let's see if these units are more durable.

This light is awesome. It really does stay lot all night and the light shines just the right amount of light on my house number sign.Just know that it's an LED light and therefor a WHITE light. Meaning its whiter than regular or even halogen bulbs.
