I admit, I was a bit perplexed with this lamp at first. It shipped in a smallish 6" cube. It's a featherweight at half a pound. It's convenient with a decent length white USB cord... but.. what to do with it? Ahhh.. it's PERFECT for my husband's desk. I found a pretty wine bottle and had it sitting on his desk when he arrived home. He LOVED the new lamp on his desk! It's perfect so he can see his keyboard in the dark without having the overhead lights adding heat to the room. I found I'm perpetually keeping my eyes open for other neat glass and plastic bottles to try with this lamp. So many are absolutely perfect. So far I've found it sits pretty on wine bottles and many different glass or plastic soda bottles. Remember those 1970s sleek neck glass soda bottles that were stretched to elongate the neck? Those would be PERFECT bottles to give this modern lamp a retro look.

Now what to do with it? It sits pretty on the computer desk, plugged into the USB port. When the computer is on the lamp has power.. when the computer is off?? Okay, well we all have those USB cubes, just plug it directly into the wall...

... but I live outside the box. I kept this lamp in the back of my mind the past few weeks as I've gone about my daily activities. The power went out one stormy eve.. we were without power about 8 hours. I needed a lamp. A light came on in my head.. I grabbed this lamp, and a USB battery recharger such as the Satechi 10000 MaH Portable Energy Station Extended Battery Charger Pack for iPhone 5, 4S, 4 & 3GS, iPad 1, 2 & 3, Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, S4 Sprint Epic 4G Touch, Blackberry Playbook, HTC Flyer. WE HAVE LIGHT ! ! NOW we're talking !! These things are GREAT for backup light when the power goes out! They are also great for camping purposes, as we learned recently at the annual ARRL Ham Radio Field Day! Again using a portable USB battery charger, the lamp stayed lit while it was needed. Need a light for your camper? Kids need a light in the back of the suv at night? This lamp just has soo many uses!

I now intend to get more of these lamps for every day use around my home, now that I've realized they are PERFECT for us disaster preparedness types!! I have several of the small USB battery chargers, now I just need more of these lamps!

So my recommended uses for this lamp includes:

* Anywhere you'd normally use a soft lamp, such as bedside, or by the computer.

* Portable Light camping, RV, or those who transport animals, it's a convenient little light.

* Emergency Light versatile for backup lighting when the power goes out

* Anywhere you'd like to have a lamp but cannot run a power cord (you'll need to switch out those USB battery chargers as needed)

Anyway, it's a great gadget, so I took it to our local ham radio club meeting. Other hams agreed, it's versatile and perfect for so many uses! Did I mention how the guys kept playing with the capacitive touch, blinking the light in morse code style?!

So.. shhh... one of the ladies said she's going to get this lamp for her father for a unique gift. It's outstanding for gift giving and is a great conversation piece.

Satechi provided this lamp for reviewing purposes. I honestly absolutely love the lamp, it's a TEN STAR item. Quality made, versatile, stylish and MODERN.

LED lamps and similar products have been out for a while, as have various USB gadgets of all description. So why did Satechi decide to bring this to market? Unlike other LED and/or USB lamps out there, the Touch is made to let you choose what your base will be. Further, when you get bored of the base, you can can change it. According to Satechi, the Touch puts out the same level of light as a 10W incandescent bulb. Looking at it while in operation, this figure seems a bit low, but since I don't have a light meter, who am I to argue. Don't mistake me, the Touch doesn't put out a ton of light. But the light it does provide would be sufficient for some bedside reading, as long as you're within a couple of feet of it. It's perhaps too strong for a night light, but adding some stickers or other materials to the outside should help tone it down a bit. Also unlike some other LED lamps I've come across the light generated by the Touch is very well diffused, evenly spread across the shade without obvious spot of higher intensity.

The materials used to make it are pretty solid, and indeed the whole unit itself feels well made. The stem of the Touch is tapered, which will allow it to fit in many different configurations. Removeable it is not, so no leaving it sitting on the bedside table at is. The on/off touch pad is hidden from any view other than above, and looks like a silver circle. Given that no heat is being generated, or a very small amount of, one can decorate the shade with pretty much anything and not have to worry about causing a fire or melting. Unless white is your decor color of choice, one thing the Touch is lacking is a variety of color, both in the shade itself and the LEDs inside. As the shade cannot be removed, one cannot swap in a shade they like better.

So far, the lack of colored shades, and the price, have been the biggest detractors for people that have asked me about the Touch. They want one in this color or that, and the current price of twenty-five bucks is more than they are willing to part with for a "fun" item. Coming in third, complaints that the Touch does not include an adapter to plug it into a standard outlet are well worth mentioning. Unless you're like me (gadget freak with an over abundance of power cords from dead/dismantled devices), chances are that you will need to figure out some solution for this if you want to use the Touch away from a PC.

Having spent four days with the Touch, it's now time for me to start taking it apart and seeing what other things I can do with it that Satechi hadn't meant it to be used for. Perhaps as a lamp or dome light inside a camper, or, under lighting for one of these glass vodka skulls Satechi included in the product images, who knows! For myself, while I found the Touch to be a solid product, I do agree that the price is too high for this plaything, so much so that I took off a star for it. There are plenty of other LED lamps on the market, perhaps not as attractive as the touch, but those are typically half the price, include an AC power adapter, and/or have features the Touch doesn't like solar and motion controlled on/off modes. Drop the price down ~$10 or do some value add to it like including the AC adapter, and the Touch is much more attractive.

Best Deals for Satechi Touch USB LED Lamp

The Satechi Touch USB LED Lamp appears to be the first of its kind product available on Amazon. There are plenty of lamps, lamps that have USB Ports for charging, however this product is something special. The first thing that came to mind is emergency lighting or camping.

This product gives a new take to the `reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra we have heard since the inception of earth day. The premise behind the Satechi Touch USB LED lamp is to use a bottle, whether it is an old fashion Coke-Cola bottle, or the energy drink glass bottle from this morning as the base for your lamp.

The features of this lamp really make it a cool product. The manufacture lists the light at 5 watts with a power consumption of only 1.2 watts. I would imagine using this during a storm when the power goes out, having it powered by a portable power bank. This could also be a great product for taking camping. This product is a good way to reuse a special bottle you might have, without having to toss it in the trash because it has no further use. The amount of light produced by this lamp is gentle but useful and this would be a fantastic bed side lamp or maybe a nice twist of decor for the work office. The lamp shade works great to diffuse the light and produces a very even tone of light.

The lamp is very simple in operation with a silver touch button at the top for turning it on and off. Powered by a USB cable (useable length starting at base of shades is about 55 inches), this is great for drawing power from a computer, wall outlet with an appropriately rated and certified wall charger, or even drawing off a power bank when there is no power around. With a rated life of 50,000 hours, that's like leaving this plugged in and turned on 24/7 lighting for nearly 6 years. Use it just a couple hours a day and you could see a couple decades of life out of this lamp.

The Satechi Touch USB LED Lamp is a really cool product. There are so many practical uses for this product, even outside of changing up your décor with a different bottle every so often. I find this product to be very durable and a worthwhile investment.

Honest reviews on Satechi Touch USB LED Lamp

Bought this for a table light for my dad, who is 86. He was having problems turning on the standard night light ( which was also to bright )

Used with a standard apple usb charger, works great. He picked out his favorite Bottle ( stand ) .

Great product.

Package was very well done and very protective for the travel.

This is the third Satechi product I have purchased. Will continue to buy this brand.

Products may seem a bit expensive, but you really get what you pay for.
