My original under cabinet lighting used to be the standard fluorescent bulb kind. While probably decent in energy usage and ok in color, the bulbs and/or other parts kept giving out. Instead of going through the same cycle of replace a part and wait for something else to break, I decided that it was time for an upgrade. Some electricians had mentioned Xenon lights. While the colors look pretty good on those, they run hot, use a lot of energy, and still would probably burn out after some time. I decided that I wanted to move to modern lighting and thus LEDs.
I didn't initially find much in the way of LED under cabinet lighting, but was fortunate to come across the Priori Plus LED Under Cabinet Lighting. I purchased one to test it (you can buy a plug for it and plug it directly into the wall to try it out). Once I got it up and running, I was in love and ordered a full set for my kitchen. The lights are great! The colors are white similar to halogen and much more pleasing than the fluorescent. The bulbs are brite and they're even dimmable! The LED lighting is somewhat directional but that's find for the purpose of lighting your counters. They produce minimal heat and use much less energy than a Xenon or halogen. These should last for decades without any maintenance. This really is the future of under cabinet lighting!
