I've used various sized Maglites over the past 30 years. Through experience, I settled on the 4C Maglite for home and outside use.

The 2-6D Maglites are too heavy and unwieldy. The body diameter is not comfortable as it is too thick.

2C Maglites while light and handy, the number of batteries are not optimal for the various different bulb types that can be used.

5-6C Maglites start to get heavy and unwieldy. While at this size they can double as batons, they are just too long for handy use.

3-4C Maglite is just the right size in terms of handling and portability. It properly balances no matter what size person, size hand or technique you use. The body diameter approximates a baton. It is long enough to double as a self-defense impact device, yet short enough to handle properly. The number of batteries provides the proper amount of power for the various types of bulbs available.

Any Maglite can break, and I've broken several over the years. The most vulnerable parts are the bulb and the switch, with less frequency the reflector.

The lens is plastic, and after awhile will become scratched and worn to the point of being opaque. At this point a replacement lens is needed. Glass is a good substitute but at the cost of being fragile. Under heavy use it will break.

My 4C Maglites have been retrofitted with Xenon bulbs, the same type bulb used in police/tactical flashlights. With good batteries they outshine the flashlights of LEOs I've known and/or worked with. With the Xenon bulbs with properly focused beam, spot illumination out to a city block is possible. The drawback with Xenon is they draw battery power and shorten battery life, but while they last the beam is powerful. This type of bulb becomes inefficient if you try to use it in 2C Maglites, the battery numbers/power can't support this type properly. The same applies if you retrofit to LED. The power draw is too great. 3-4C provides the proper amount of power for Xenon and LED bulbs, less batteries give diminishing returns, more batteries becomes heavy and awkward.

I favor the 4C model over the 3C as battery packs are always sold in 2/4/8 increments. It is more cost efficient to feed a 4C than a 3C, rather than have loose batteries of various ages lying about.

I've given the 4C out as gifts, and all recipients love it, to the point they've thrown out or given away all their D-model Maglites.

And for economy, the 4C/Xenon setup will equal or outdo more expensive name-brand tactical lights but will do it cheaper. You can setup such a system for about $25. The drawback is this system will be heavier and larger, but battery replacement is simple, cheap over-the-counter C-cells. Just about all the quality tac lights require specialized hard-to-find, expensive batteries. Just the ease of battery replacement alone compensates for the size difference.

So I recommend the 4C model. It is the right size for balance, handling, weight and power for whatever needs you have. And it is comfortable for the opposite sex.

I have used several Maglite flashlights over the years. This one is excellent, as are the others. I read one one-star review of this Maglite , complaining that the light was dim, comparing this Maglite to a SureFire M6 . That ShureFire flashlight costs $300 to $400. That's a little out of most people's price range, unless your boss is paying for it.

I've had Maglite 4D for years and found it to be to large, heavy, and ackward. I'm a big fan of "Cops", and took notice of how many officers were using the C3 and C4 Maglites, so I ordered a C4 last year. After it arrived I purchased a Maglite LMSA401 Xenon blub locally. I did see a noticable improvement with the Xenon upgrade. After using it for over a year on a near daily basis it has exceeded all my expectations. It is a comfortable size, well balanced, very powerful, and should last years and years.

For under $20 it would be hard to find a better household gift that will render years of service.

I would like to start off by saying that I have been a long time supporter of Maglite's and am firm believer that they deliver a high quality product. This light does not live up to those high quality standards. The tolerances are off leaving the reflector head feeling loose and the clicker on off button feels cheap, like it will break sooner than later. Save your money and buy the 3 D -cell LED Maglite. I am disappointed.

I love this as a duty flashlight, but the rubber button that covers the switch is soft and flimzy, not as I remembered my prior maglites had.
