Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs) are in reality, well, fluorescent lamps. Looks can be deceiving. CFLs may be curled around in circles to fit in bulb-like looking glass, but they are more directly related to the old fashioned long Florescent bulbs than they are to round incandescent bulbs.

Given this, I thought that the Amprobe LT-10 would be a perfect way to test those high perched CFL floods. You know, those modern pod lights that contractors like to stuff way up in 16 foot ceilings. They require a special tool to change them because they are way above the reach of anyone who isn't a pro basketball player.

Unfortunately, the Amprobe LT-10 appears unable to test this Florescent lamp variant. This is probably not Amprobe's fault. I honestly don't know that the device was designed for this purpose.

As for the LT-10 itself, it has a great reach with the extension antenna. It comes with a terrific case and a nicely printed manual. (Although there is an addendum sheet with corrections to the manual that you don't want to lose.) They even provide a battery and it is already installed in the LT-10. Very nice touch indeed!

BTW, the LT-10 is battery operated but it can still deliver a rather nasty shock if used improperly. So be sure to follow the cautions in the manual when using the device.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This makes it much easier to test lamps without having to remove each tube. I have about 120 4' fluorescent tubes in my basement, another 200 in my shop and I used Amprobe LT-10 Lamp Tester with Non-Contact Voltage Detection and 48" Antenna to test all in less than 15 mins. The LED indicator gives a reading on the strength of each lamp and can troubleshoot the ballast or lamp. Many times I have replaced good tubes only to find I had a bad ballast. If light bulb passes the test and the voltage is present but the lamp is not working, then replace the ballast. This can be done without removing the lamp.

I found this in the easy to read and illustrated Users Manual. Please read below to understand how simple anyone can check lamps.

Press and hold down the LAMP TEST button.

• The fluorescent lamp is good if lit during lamp test

• The fluorescent lamp is bad if not lit during lamp test

• If the fluorescent lamp is lit during the lamp test, but does not

function when installed in the light fixture, the spiral wound filament, the starter or the ballast may be faulty.

Included is an antenna to check voltage on your lamps and fixture. It will beep and a red LED light will flash if voyage is correct. Also included is a Pin tester to troubleshoot. In this case you must remove the tube and insert the Pins into a slot of the handheld device. I was not aware of this option at first but quickly discovered the Pin tester.

It uses, 1 x 9V lithium or alkaline battery only, 6LR61/6LF22/MN1604 or equivalent and I found that any 9V battery will test about 400-500 bulbs. Very economical to use and you do not have to be an electrician to use, although it is designed for technical use as well. The average homeowner will probably not get enough usage to pay for this tester. At the time of this review I found prices to run between $100-150.

I recommend Amprobe if you're like me, with a home and business that has over 300 fluorescent tubes. it could be used for schools, hospitals, large buildings or any maintenance man or lighting specialist. ****It is only designed for fluorescent tubes.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program You know the old adage time is money... over the product like the Amprobe fluorescent light tester it will definitely save you time and money. Now I'm not a janitor or maintenance manager and those of the people that a product like this would help immensely. Basically you can test florescent lights without having to pull them out and you can just get a bead on if they work or not with a simple device. And it only $99 at the time of writing this review that's a pretty decent price for a product that can definitely save you hours if you're someone needing to check how your fluorescent light bulbs are doing. And to me somebody like a janitor in the school would find a product like this worth its weight in gold.

So yes I think it's super useful and I did no such device even existed so that's a bonus in itself.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This product description is a bit vague, so I guess most people would miss the good part. It wasn't designed only to check only fluorescent lights. Beside CFL, how many houses use a lot of tube fluorescent lights now a day? You can use this device to check home's electrical wiring for voltage. At least that is where I found the most use for it.

I moved into an old home that the previous owner did a lot creative wiring. So I have no way to know which is good and which is live with voltage. Well, this device gave me that. Just touch the probe to the wire and it beeps with flashing LED. No voltage presents and nothing happened. I have removed several dead circuit in my attic thanks to this wonderful probe.

I tested it on some of my fluorescent and it worked as advertised. This is great for warehouse or factory where a lot of tube fluorescent lights are used. But if you need to check your wiring, this is the one that will help a bunch!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The amprobe is a simple tool to help locate the source of the problem when a fluorescent light fixture isn't working. It has both visual (lights) and audible (alarm) cues to determine if the fault is the bulb/ filament, voltage at the fixture or ballast.

I imagine this would be of a good deal more use to someone with a large bank of fixtures to test than to the average home owner.

We have one fixture which has given us trouble for years, and as it turns out, the answer in our case was none of the above. The prior owner had just installed the wrong type of fixture for our environment, which I found out after replacing the bulb, and then testing everything with this device. If I had had the amprobe first I would not have bothered replacing the bulb only to discover that there was nothing wrong with it to begin with (but a mismatch for a very humid environment).

The amprobe has an antenna which allows you to test the bulb and voltage at a distance. This would greatly facilitate checking multiple bulbs/ fixtures, or difficult to reach fixtures. In my case it did not help a lot but only because the problem was not a fault with bulb, wiring or fixture.
