they give off a bright white light and they stay on long after other lights have retired for the evening. its 430 am here right now, and two of them are still glowing if only a little bit.
i originally bought them with the intent of installing them on 4 fence posts BUT they are closer to 5 in x 5 in than 4 inches (which is the standard side of a fence post) so i don't know if they would have worked as a post light. i staked them into the grass next to a path around my garden.

After reading reviews of other solar powered outdoor lights, I was worried that these wouldn't work that well. I was pleasantly surprised by these lights. I put them in my side yard between the house and a fence. They receive good sunlight for part of the day but are in the shade for other parts (shaded by the fence). Nonetheless, so far they are getting sufficient sunlight to last very long into the night on most days. One day when I got up before dawn, three of the four lights were still on (lasting the entire night). The fourth is a bit more shaded than the others so it not lasting through the night is expected.The lights are also sufficiently bright for my needs. It is a dark walkway and they light the path gently but effectively. The ridged casing also makes for an interesting lighting pattern that is kind of neat. They aren't near the brightness of powered lights but I was again pleasantly surprised. The lights worked right out of the box after letting them charge up for a day or two.
Why don't I rate them five stars? The enclosure itself is only average aesthetically. They are plastic and the surrounding trim doesn't fit tightly. Nonetheless, I recommend these lights. They work quite well for lighting my side yard path, they were easy to install, and they last very late into the night. The only outstanding issue is how long the rechargeable batteries will last. The manual claims about a year but I won't be able to comment on that until next year :-)

These are really nice. Sturdy and made of vinyl so they can't rust. (Not sure what the previous reviewer was reviewing but it sure wasn't these!) The only drawback is that if you leave them on all the time you'll have to change the batteries after about a year of use. These lights put out more light than others, but their base is a little larger than a 4x4 post (which is 3.75x3.57 or 3.5 x 3.5, not sure which one).I use these on my front stairs posts. They do not stay secure on a 4x4. They are a little larger and you'll need to secure them with the screws from two sides.
I have some solar post caps lights on my deck (different type), less light, but perfect fit.
Overall I'm happy with these, but keep in mind that these are exactly 4" x 4" at the base.

Downgraded my review from 3 stars to two stars.
The plastic window on all of them (have 8) faded really bad and they look ugly. Buy them if you are ok with 2 year of service. The sun really damaged them.
They all come apart too easy now if you touch them.

I really like these lights. The only negative is that the white part looks kind of cheap close up. But there is a long list of positives to outweigh that.1. They are MUCH brighter than other inexpensive solar lights we have owned.
2. They were easy to install on 4x4 posts. There was some wiggle room so a shim and screw were needed. No big deal.
3. They have survived the extensive rain and cold weather over several months.
4. They stay lit long enough for me to take the dogs out before bedtime at 10pm. I can not really comment on how many hours these last each night. We have them installed in a shaded location, which gets a few hours of sun each day.
I would buy these again. And I would recommend them to a friend.

Update: One of the lights bit the dust after 10 months. We experienced a LOT of wind this spring and the gate post one of the lights was mounted to must have been getting hit by a loose gate. The result was that the very TOP of the light where the solar panel and light are mounted kept falling off the rest of the unit. I should have taken it inside to glue it back together, but never got around to it. Eventually, one of the times the top fell off the solar panel detached, and good-bye solar light!!! The other three are still all working GREAT! And they look the same as the day they were installed. In the long run it was my fault the product broke, but others may learn the durability and application of these lights from my experience.
