The only negatives are that the brightness and dispersion may not be as good as a halogen of similar rating, and you can't get very close to a true white light. However, there are plenty of other options, including LED replacement options for white lights for similar applications, and the main attraction of this product is the multi-color and changing-color capabilities, rather than a need for a neutral light source. I am gradually replacing all of the halogens in my studio with these bulbs, and they are great fun and useful for literally seeing things in a different light.
