These bulbs are outstanding in the right application! We have an unfinished basement with 9' ceilings, and a garage with 12' ceilings. Both came with the standard ceramic receptacles and 60w incandescent bulbs. Both were dimly lit and dreary. I was considering swapping out the ceramics for florescent tube fixtures when I stumbled across these bulbs. Since we had the ceiling clearance I figured we should give them a try. That was December 2009. I installed 5 of these and we've been exceedingly pleased with them ever since.
They turn on instantly, but do take a short amount of time to reach full brightness. We've noticed no hum or other noise from them. They don't have that awful clinical "feel" that most tube fluorescents emit, and are a little less "yellow" than your standard incandescent. Outdoor temperature doesn't seem to adversely affect them. The ones in the garage (which get used year round) are in their second winter. We treat them just like any other bulb and they're used several times a week often several times a day.
Not sure what to make of the reviewers who've complained and lowered their ratings based on the size of these considering the size is clearly given in the description... If you don't have an application for a bulb of this size, why would you buy it? You wouldn't buy size 15 shoes if you had size 12 feet; would you?
For everyone else that does have a use for a bulb this size, buy them!!

This bulb is absolutely huge.I originally bought it and the 42-watt Feit to compare light quality and brightness. This one has nicer light, but the bulb is so big that I haven't found a good place for it. I had planned to use it for my front porch but it's bright enough that you don't want guests going blind, so I need to find another place to use it. The 65-watt bulb looks "warm" like regular incandescents; the 42-watt bulb has a piercing bluish color that looks "cold".
I'm also uploading a photo to the Customer Images section that shows how this bulb size compares to a regular incandescent bulb. If you have a good place for it, I'd recommend this bulb. The main reason I rated it 3 stars instead of 5 is that the overwhelming size makes it hard to use anywhere.

This is a great bulb. I replaced my 300 watt incandescent bulb with the CFL bulb for one reason and one reason only. I couldn't stop thinking of my meter spinning with my bright 300 watt incandescent power hog. The CFL that I purchased from Amazon was a little brighter than the incandescent after it warmed up and used a quarter of the electricity. This bulb is as advertised and what I expected, but I must warn you, it's only good for open fixtures as the bulb is as big as a super burrito.Honest reviews on Feit Electric ESL65TN 65-Watt Compact Fluorescent High-Wattage
Pros: PLENTY of light. Efficient usage (less power than a 100W bulb), lasts a long time (I have 3 of them that have lasted me almost 2 years and still running strong)Cons: The bulb is HUGE. Ideally suited for an appropriate socket. They do fit in the Ikea standing lamps (that where I am using mine) but be careful not to move the lamp too much.
Overall: Provides excellent lighting. May be a bit overwhelming for small rooms but I still like lots of light :-)
Definitely a 4.5 or even a 5 out of 5 :D :)
