As I stated earlier, the DCL040 is easily adjustable and positionable. The head can be pivoted 120 degrees and attached to the back is a metal clip that allows the light to be hung for hands-free illumination. But here's where I ran into the only major issue. The pivoting head. Although it is detented and clicks into place, it's not tight enough, so the head is easily moved if bumped. I mean, it's not loose enough to flail all around at that slightest touch, but it is quite easy to move. Not a deal breaker, but worth mentioning.
All-in-all, I am quite impressed with this work light and can definitely reccomend it to someone looking for a bright, somewhat compact light source that will stand up to the day-to-day rigors of the job site.

This is a great worklight if you're looking to send a beacon to a distant galaxy. Otherwise...This thing throws out a beam that has a very intense, blinding center spot in the beam. At about four feet from a wall, that center spot is only about two inches in diameter, and the rest of the beam is very weak, and about 40" in diameter.
You can take this light outside, and spot up into a tree 40-50 ft., and that center spot will still be very intense and small. But this light isn't marketed as a spot, and the fanatics over on one of the candle power forums sure aren't going to advocate it for that.
It fails miserably as a worklight as a result. The extremely concentrated center part of the beam bounces back off anything very reflective, and just blinds you, besides being *way* too intense on a very small area. (A table saw, hubcap, inside of a furnace....you name it.) Trying to adjust this thing angle/distance-wise in a shop to get anything good going was an exercise in frustration.
It needs a diffuser of some sort to break up the light beam and make it acceptable. But that's not our job that's something DeWalt should've done.
It's infuriating that they would tie their proprietary battery to this light, after you've done them the favor of buying their drill or whatever (with me it was the drill), and then do such a sorry job with the light. The light is way overpriced to begin with, but you feel like you're saving by teaming it with the already-in-your-possession battery.
...Well-played, DeWalt.
Best Deals for DEWALT DCL040 20-Volt MAX LED Flashlight
I bought the Dewalt DCL040 20-Volt MAX LED Flashlight because I needed a bright flashlight for around-the-apartment purposes. I'm not a contractor, but thought it would be a nice tool to have in addition to my new Dewalt DCD785c2 hammer drill. I thought it would be beneficial to purchase this particular model because it uses the same batteries that the new 20-Volt MAX drills use. This is perfect because I no longer need to go out and purchase separate batteries for a flashlight!PROS:
Rugged for work applications
VERY bright LED light
Compatible with 20-Volt MAX Dewalt batteries (both 1.5 amp and 3.0 amp)
Light moves into various positions for many application scenarios (90 degree as the picture shows to straight like a typical flashlight)
Can be hung using the metal hoop attached to the light
CONS:
The light is a little "weak" feeling when moving it into different positions.
All-in-all, this thing is more than I need right now, but it will definitely last into the future! Thanks Dewalt!
