Installation of this kit will do several things to your 2 AA Maglite: it will change the color of the light produced to blue-white and will remove the ability to vary the shape of the beam from tightly focused to a wide-angle flood; it will only produce a wide-angle flood. The result will be a flashlight that is very useful over short distances (eg. a darkened room or basement or walking along a dark road) but useless for trying to brightly illuminate anything any distance away. The payoff of the LED is that it is supposed to be much easier on batteries than the standard krypton bulb.

Candle mode still works but not as well as with the standard bulb.

I gave the LED kit 3 stars because of the limited range of the light; on the other hand, the light produced is bright and is supposed to make batteries last much longer. I also like the blue-white color that the LED produces.

Happily, it appears that it easy to convert back to the original setup if I have to do so. However, for indoor use or limited-range outdoor use, the LED setup is fine.

The important thing to realize here is that this product changes your flashlight a lot -in ways that some people will like, and other people obviously won't like. It no longer focuses to a bright spot, so you can't light up objects at much distance. It isn't nearly as bright either. On the good side, it's still bright enough to find your way around at night, and the quality of the light -the whiteness and smoothness of the spot -is much improved. A set of batteries will keep it running much longer, and the LEDs should never break or burn out. If those are the qualities you are looking for, then I say go for it!

On the other hand. . . If you want a small flashlight that's really bright, that focuses well and lights things up at at a distance (but with less battery life), then you might consider an actual Mini Maglite LED flashlight. It's a completely different beast, and I think they both have their uses.

Good mod for a spare "fill" light to get a just a little more light. Trade off brightness and focus capability for distinctly better battery life and near indestructibility. Have had mine for over a year w/o any trouble. As the availability of 1 watt Luxeon equipped lights have increased in quantity and dropped significantly in cost, this swap is only for those who feel it a shame to waste their old light. Perfect for kids. Works fine w/ rechargeable batteries.

This thing works great. I use this as my backup light at work, with a 3 d-cell led upgrade mag light as primary.

But,you can get this at Wal-Mart for $4.96...

This product was exactly what I wanted (I bought 2) and the kits were easy to install. I now have 2 Mini Maglite flashlights which give a bright white light. I can see much more clearly at night than with the old bulbs which gave a yellowish light. [No more tripping over dog toys!] There has been no flickering or dimming of the light over time. I've noticed that the batteries are lasting longer. This product was not available in local stores, even our ACE Hardware. The Amazon price was reasonable, the kits were easy to order and they arrived VERY quickly. Overall, I'd rate this product as excellent.
