These Streamlight units are great products overall... they're built like tanks, have every feature you can want and are easy to use, are lightweight but durable, and best of all take multiple battery types, using CR123 to get 55 lumens or AAs to get 47 lumens. The 14512 comes with the headstrap and helmet mount in a clamshell package, as opposed to other model numbers that are the same actual light, except in a retail box or without a headstrap, etc. (Note that to actually mount this on a helmet, you need part 14057 that bolts to the helmet itself.) A PDF catalog is downloadable from Streamlight's website listing all the packaging/model permutations, it's very helpful when figuring out which one to order.

On the downside, and this is really my fault for not doing enough homework, but in an open field the unit's 47 55 lumens really leaves you wanting more. Had I done more homework, I would've known that the unit's 50-ish lumens is helpful and certainly enough light to see, but not really enough if you're doing search & rescue work and actively looking for something on the ground. If I had to do it again, I'd spend the extra money to get a Petzl or Surefire headlamp at 100+ lumens. They're about twice as expensive, but twice as bright, too.

For the money, this is the prefect backup or early morning go to the woods hunting light. Mine was snowed on, rained on and took a tumble down a hill. It never stopped working or lost integrity. The only complaint was the SHORT battery life...Had I needed it if stranded, you would need a pack of batteries.

I needed a new headlight for offshore sailing and several features on this light made it very attractive for that activity. I like the feature that starts out the light on the lowest brightness rather than the highest as my old light does so I can get just the amount I need and no more so I don't lose my night vision. I like that I don't have to cycle through all the colors and intensities to get to the one I want. I wanted the red light for reading and close work as it doesn't affect my night vision, and won't disturb other sleeping crew-members. I haven't tried out the blue light offshore yet, but it seems like it will be useful. The switch is silent and easy to use, the color selection is easy to use with the light strapped to my head. The white light on bright is awesome! The strap is OK, I would prefer one with a second strap over the top of my head. With no pad on the back of the strap adapter, it is not as comfortable as my other lights, and I usually wear a headlight all the time on night watches and any other time I'm up at night. It appears very solid and looks to be very water resistant. Obviously very high quality. I like the ability to use several types of batteries, especially a normal AA alkaline, as I travel frequently and getting specialized batteries in foreign countries can be difficult, although I have found if you buy the Steamlight CR123A lithium in bulk online, it is quite reasonably priced. My next trip is coming up in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to using it. My wife is a very light sleeper and I have been using it to read in bed at night with the red. I haven't woken her up yet when I did regularly with my old light on low, white.

Sturdy construction. Strong LEDs. Dual battery possibility lithium that comes with it but will take AA as well. Using for nighttime animal observation with IR scope and works well. Have not tried alternate products for comparison, though.

This is a great headlamp. Very bright. Many settings. Excessive, which I love. The only issue I had was the fact that the headband was itchy in one spot.

I also tested the I.R. light. It works just the rest of the lamp.
