Personally, I always carry spare battery reloads, so battery life is not that big of deal to me...on full brightness it will not last as long (of course) as on lower intensity levels, but for the use I put this to, this is, again not a big deal.
Again personally, I don't like to use rechargeable batteries for most of my stuff, particularly for an item like this one that may not be used for several weeks at a time. So I opted for this version instead of the one with rechargeable batteries for this reason.

This is an amazing torch, super robust and the batteries last forever. Halogen bulb is crap, though, there's no use whatsoever for it it not only wastes your battery away but also doesn't light the way as brightly and as far as the led bulbs. It's also a bit heavy. If your just want to have a reliable torch you might want to buy something lighter, but if you want something which can resist shocks and withstand the toughest uses, for example on a cave which is what it's designed for that you don't want to worry about it getting wet or crushed, that's something you won't regret buying.Best Deals for Petzl Duo LED 14 Headlamp
In the spectrum of LED technology and reflector design for the halogen light, Petzl should improve this specific product in the face of far superior products manufactured by Surefire, Inc.Very poor halogen beam quality in a critical situation and outdated LED technology great for hunting rodents in your homes crawl space, but that's about it for spelunking folks.
I would simply not trust this Petzl light in a critical situation and strongly urge a serious spelunker to avoid this so 90's product.
With Surefire's new Saint Minimus head lamp available in October 2009 these people are the real deal in quality, well engineered products designed to protect life.
I do not work for Surefire, but have used numerous of their products professionally for many years.Surefire Saint Minimus HS2-A-BK Headlamp NIB
