After searching extensively for pendant lights to replace the ugly track lights over my bar, I found this one. I was skeptical, as I had previously ordered and returned a couple of fixtures that were flimsy and cheap looking. This set is sleek and contemporary, The few parts that are plastic are of good quality, nicely shaped, and perfectly matched to the metal track. It has the appearance of a much more expensive fixture, and I could not be more pleased!

I have a three level deck with a large, gnarly tree trunk, separating the levels. The foliage is lost, above the roof. I wanted to decorate the trunk, which seemed so bare, but showed promise. Fairy lights was my way to embrace the tree's spirit, so to speak. I consider it tree make-up.

First off, it's important to follow the instructions and to fully charge the system, then check it out to make sure it's working, then do the stringing. I know, I'm an immediate gratification person, too, but this will solve many of the complaints reported by reviewers.

After a full charge, my lights were literally dusk to dawn, but I'm in the blaring sun of TX, so your situation may be different. In the last couple of days, it has been drizzling and overcast. I turned the switch to blinking (which extends the life of the battery) and still have had, at least, 5 hours of light --even with very limited solar rejuvenation.

I'm enjoying these lights, enough, that I'm preparing to purchase more. I know some feel that outdoor lights should be limited to Christmas. I have to ask, why. If you love the festivity of lights and just want to sit outside to commune, and medicate with the dark of night --go for it. Celebrate the 'free-child,' within.

Remember, you will need 'sun.' It's why they're called 'solar lights.' So, don't be disappointed, if you are in a sunshine free zone, for a while. You might want to opt for a different system.

First set quit after one night, second lasted two nights. It rained, they got wet, quit. Sadly, they were really pretty. UPDATE: I still have not returned these. I thought it really strange that when they dried out, they started working again. So I changed out the batteries and put a plastic bag over it for protection (saw this on another review) and so far they are working fine. I have a couple more weeks before the return window closes, so if I don't put anything else in this review it means they are still working. Like I said, they are very bright and pretty. I changed from 1 to 3 stars because I had to change batteries -at my cost -but I could have returned them and reordered, and it wouldn't have cost me anything extra. One of the benefits of shopping with Amazon.

The cost? Twenty-ish bucks. The installation? Ridiculously easy. The effect? Absolutely enchanting! These lights are so beautiful, with a warm white color that rivals the look of regular white lights but thanks to the ingenious addition of solar charging, you can put these practically anywhere without having to mess with a tangle of cords and wires and plugs. I placed these in a remote area of our garden and they add just the right touch of sparkle, with a generous 55-foot length to let you string them anywhere to your heart's content. It literally took me five minutes to put the solar charger together, and even with just a few hours' sunlight, they held a full charge on the very first day and added delight to the night. Couldn't be happier with these. Ordering my second set today... they're just too pretty to resist. :)

UPDATE: I did indeed order my second set, and they arrived right on time. What was really cool is that they were already partially charged (the other ones may have been too; didn't think to check), so they started sparkling right away, right out of the box. Several people have seen these lights in my garden and have commented on how pretty they are and asked where they can get their own. If you have any doubts about these lovely lights, cast them aside and place your order. They are the real deal absolutely gorgeous, and so convenient and easy to set up you won't be disappointed.

I purchased these lights because I planned on using them on a 11 foot tall pine in my front yard. I wanted something that is solar powered since the tree is so far from the house. The lights charge up great, turn on when it gets dark out and stay lit throughout the night. However, one string is not long enough for the pine and the lights are not bringht enough to shine through the dense pine tree so I ended up putting them on a dogwood tree and they look very nice. Also, just as a side note the color is more ice blue than white.

I put two of these strips under my kitchen counter for my supervisor (wife). She likes the way they light the counter. These are made in China LED strips in an aluminum frame, not the greatest quality but certainly worth the money. I was glad I could just purchase these lights without the charger, I have lots of 12vdc supplies sitting around. Don't have the odd connector that is on these lights? I simply cut the cord and used wire nuts. Works great.

This bulb is an "almost" perfect replacement for a "traditional" incandescent. Price is still a bit high and dimming is not perfect, but color, instant-on, brightness, and power usage are very good. These problems are not enough that I would ding it a full star in my rating a 4.5 stars if that was possible. More details are below.

This Philips model #423798 is the 65W replacement, 730 lumens, soft white (2700K) version of their BR30 floodlight line-up. It's typically used in ceiling floodlights alternatively with it's wider brother the BR40. The line-up of similar bulbs is:

BR30 Soft White (2700K), 730 lumens, 13w, Retail or Frustration-Free #423798 UPC#046677421946

BR30 Bright white (3000K) #420281

BR30 Daylight (5000K), 730 lumens, 10w, Retail #425306 UPC#046677425302

BR40 Soft White (2700K) 800 lumens, 14.5w, Retail #423756 UPC#046677420291

If you're decking out a whole area in flood lights, 2-packs and 4-packs of each are available. Unfortunately as of Aug 2013 Amazon's selection of other types and quantities still limited.

Packaging: If you can, get the frustration-free version. The retail package is very thick plastic and is completely fused together around the bulb. My mostly-sharp knife barely made a dent in it. Two-hands on scissors was the only way I could get it off and even then I made a sharp mess out of it.

Dimensions: The bulb size is close to that of a normal bulb and it looks like they tried to make the neck part as skinny as possible for compatibility with most fixtures. I had no problems installing it in mine.

Delay: When turned on from a cold state, there is very slight delay of about 1/3 of a second, during which it seems to turn on at half-brightness and then jump to full. Much better than the competing Sylvania model which can take up to a full second to come on. Once warmed up the delay is even smaller.

Color: I compared the color with another soft white incandescent and found it to be virtually identical. Maybe 2800K versus 2700K, but close enough to pass.

Lumens: Officially it is spec-ed at 730 which seems to be average for most incandescent 65-watts being sold today. They usually vary between 600 and 800 depending on efficiency. I have no way to objectively confirm this rating, but anecdotally it does seem a tad brighter than the 650 lumen bulb it replaced.

Power: Philips claims it uses 13-watts during operation. My tests with a Kill-A-Watt device actually showed only 11-watts being pulled at 123V, so if anything it's more efficient.

Heat: Even with it's efficiency, heat is surprisingly still a bit of a concern with these bulbs. After being on for an hour in an open BR40-rated can it was registering 123F on the face as measured using an infrared thermometer. Hot enough that you don't want to touch it immediately after it has been on, but not as bad as the burn you would get from an incandescent.

Dimming: I'm using a 3-year old Lutron Maestro dimmer that is not specifically rated for CFL or LED use. If the dimmer is turned on to the lowest setting from the off position, it starts at about 25% of full brightness. It then increases smoothly up to full brightness with no color-shift, flicker, or other abnormalities. Dimming it down from full power lets me get to about 20% of full, but that's it it will go straight to off at anything else. Useable? Yes, but it's not the gentle, romantic glow you might want from a lower setting.

Longevity: I will update this review if this bulb burns out. So far no early-death problems.

Price: As far as price goes, it's currently available for $30. Some local jurisdictions are offering subsidizing of the price down to $20, which makes it a really good deal. By my calculations, taking the US average of 11 cents/kWh, a use of 3 hours per day, $30 price tag, you'll break even with a ~$3 incandescent at about the 4 year mark. Not bad. Use it 5 hours a day and it'll take 2.5 years. Really what it comes down to is this: get it at a good price and only use it for fixtures that you know get a lot of use. That's where you'll see the most bang for the buck.

The Philips 423798 13-Watt BR30 Indoor Flood LED Light Bulb, Dimmable replacement floods are what LED replacement floods should look like. Unlike many other competitors Philips has developed a near perfect replacement for incandescent flood bulbs. In most light fixtures you would hardly notice that there was an LED in place of a traditional bulb, and the fit and finish of the product makes this bulb gives it a contemporary design appeal that isn't in any other LED bulb on the market.

PERFORMANCE ***** : Compared to a traditional incandescent bulb it's replacing you'll gain greater luminous flux or lumens (brightness) 730 vs 580 (Damar 65W Flood in my case) at a 5th of the power consumption. I have found this suits my situation well because the areas my floods were lighting up always seemed a bit too dark for my liking. One unfortunate feature of LED is that it won't go nearly as dim as my incandescent, but it doesn't affect me as I don't need a light that is barely lit. I do not know if this is a by-product of my dimmer switch or the fact that overall, this LED is 150 lumens brighter than my incandescent. In either case, it dims to an acceptable "dim" level (about 15% of overall brightness vs 5% for incandescent) and for my use I do not need or use the extremely dim setting ever, so I did not remove a star or even half a star for this.

COLOR ***** : The light rendition is quite accurate at 2700K, nice soft warm light that won't make your space feel like an office with overhead florescent lighting or a warehouse with really harsh florescent or halogen lighting. G33kman's suggestion of the daylight (5000K) variation #425306 (that Amazon no longer carries) as an alternative is far to white-bluish and harsh, really harsh. I purchase one to test out compared to these from a famous national hardware store that begins with Home, and I found that the light produced was far too stark for home use, and it felt like a spotlight that you'd use in an operating room or dentist chair or oncoming xenon high beams. This light on the other hand has great color rendition performed some test photos with my DSLR and easily set 2700K as the white balance and images came out nearly spot on.

AESTHETICS & FIT ***** : As mentioned at the top of my review these LEDs are a perfect replacement for the BR30 form factor. I even placed my old incandescent floods in the packaging that these bulbs came in and it fit light a glove. So long as you are purchasing the correct bulb for the correct fixture you shouldn't have a problem replacing your old lights for these. Philips offers a BR40 variation that fits floods that are typical of 75W/100W or higher floods (longer neck and wider bulb). Unlike the other competitors on the market these lights don't LOOK like LEDs, and the diffusion lens in front of the LEDs is not at all transparent, just enough opaqueness to hide the fact that they are LEDs and allow for a good balanced wash of light (no harsh spots like some competitor LED bulbs). Some people have mentioned in their reviews that depending on your angle to the light you may see some glaring from LEDs which I do not believe to be true, these lights are 26% brighter than traditional bulbs they replace so that glare could be a byproduct of the higher light output. I can stand in various angles from my flood lights and I cannot see any flares, but as I have mentioned they are significantly brighter. If you have flood fixtures that the bulb is not enclosed these LEDs do not have the ugly heat sink design on the body of the bulb; the smooth white neck of the bulb and aluminum finish around the lens makes the Philips LED flood look very modern and pleasing to any home decor. If you have flood lighting fixtures that are position-able, you may have issues with the added weight of these bulbs, but that is likely the case with any LED replacement bulb. Just tighten your hinges and your lights should stay in place.

PRICE **** : At 12-13X the cost of traditional incandescent bulbs this might be a hard pill to swallow, as cost savings probably won't be offset for 2-3 years of use. So it's a bit more of an initial investment for most people. However, at a energy savings of 80% of a traditional bulb it's replacing you won't feel guilty if you left a light on when you leave the house. In one hour use of a traditional bulb you'll get 5 hours with this one and the added benefit of cooler operating tempurature (less A/C in the summer) and a brighter light. Look for these lights on a price dip and you'll gain even more cost savings benefit from switching and making your home more green. These have a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer but I suspect that like most other LED bulbs you'll get a 22 year life span from these based upon a 3 hour/day use. That's more than most people live in one place!

PACKAGING *** : I wasn't willing to wait for Amazon's frustration-free packaging option to ship to me (1-3 month wait) so I opted for the retail version. The packaging is made to show off the look of the light and deter people from stealing these from brick and mortar stores. The plastic clam-shell case that is used in the retail version requires a very sharp box cutter or utility knife to open, or a sharp pair of good quality scissors, maybe even a large wire cutter. Plastic shards will likely fly around when opening the packaging with scissors. I have found that using a box cutter and cutting an almost square box around the outside of the tabs of the packaging to be the best method of opening the plastic shell after removing it from the cardboard outer sleeve. You'll have to use a bit of force to get through one layer of the plastic but be careful not to press too hard else you will cut through both layers and potentially your other hand if you're holding it. I am going to omit packaging in my overall score because you're not buying this product for ease of opening the package, you're considering your purchase of this product for it's performance, cost and energy savings benefit.

OVERALL ***** : I couldn't be happier with my purchase of the Philips 423798 13-Watt BR30 Indoor Flood LED Light Bulbs. Philips has outdone themselves with this product and I hope this can translate to other lighting products in the market they sell. By 2015 it's going to be pretty difficult to find traditional incandescent lighting as there is a big push for replacements of more "green" alternatives, so whether you wait or pull the trigger now, you'll be pleased with the results you get from these in all aspects of your lighting and energy needs.

Best Deals for Philips 423798 13-Watt (65 Watt) BR30 Indoor Soft White (2700K)

Light color seems similar to incandescent, but the off-angle glare is worse on the face of the bulb than an incandescent. This is probably due to the light emitting diodes being right behind the white diffuser plate whereas an in an incandescent bulb the filament is recessed an inch or two back from frosted face. When you are off to the side of the light enough to see it in your field of view on the ceiling, in the incandescent case you'll only see indirect light off the frosted face, not directly be able to see the recessed filament. In the LED case you are seeing almost directly the LED light emitters behind the diffuser.

If your ceiling cans are deep enough this might not be a problem. Ours are shallow enough that the face of the bulbs are visible from most anywhere in the room. The extra glare is annoying enough that I might try to put up some sort of extra diffuser or shroud of some sort around the light. Since they run cooler than a bulb, I don't have to worry as much about melting or catching on fire.

Honest reviews on Philips 423798 13-Watt (65 Watt) BR30 Indoor Soft White (2700K)

I've tried several different replacements for our overhead flood lights. CFL's are fine, but turning them on and off multiple times a day lessens their life. Plus CFL's can take time to warm up and there's the mercury disposal issue. The early Philips LED floods were too heavy and caused my fixtures to sag down from the ceiling.

This bulb and its 12 watt "bright white" sibling are lighter and the quality of the light is high. Recommended. Now if only the price would drop!

Before I proceed, please note: The Amazon description, above, refers to a 13 Watt / 800 lumens bulb, while the title and accompanying photo refer to a 10 Watt / 730 lumens bulb. I've not purchased from Amazon until this is clarified. For the identical price ($31.97), one can purchase the 10 Watt bulb from Home Depot -that's where I got mine. Purchased through Amazon with Prime, there is free shipping and no sales tax -a slight advantage.

=====

This is a very nice looking bulb. I very much like the "Daylight" color -bright white. It also instantly turns on, even when dimmed, and exhibits no flicker. The bulbs I compare with are compact fluorescent dimmable BR30's. What I don't like about them is their color (yellow), warm up period (several minutes), and flicker (especially when dimmed). Plus, though they are low energy, they do put out quite a bit of heat.

This bulb (the 10 Watt) is cool to the touch, even after hours in use. It doesn't heat up our control room, even while throwing out a lot of light. The brightness and color are stable, and the bulb has no trouble lighting up when switched on with the dimmer engaged. Our compact fluorescents often will not come on when first powered up and dimmed, as they must first warm up.

My only complaint: price. $30+ for a light bulb is steep. As it is for a workplace and the cost is not mine, I find it extremely useful. White light, no heat, and easy to read under, even when dimmed. Also, no flicker or noise. I'm happy that we'll be saving energy, but the heat is the main thing in our space. Lower the price by half, and my bet is that no one will use the compact fluorescents!

Important Update: In August 2012, several of the 17 bulbs I ordered in 2011 burned out. I immediately contacted LightKiwi and they were extremely responsive and helpful. They offered to replace all of the bulbs free of charge with their latest model which was UL-certified. I sent back the old bulbs and received the new ones within a week. The new bulbs are even better than the old ones, being 9 watts rather than 6. The light is warmer and brighter and the dimming feature has been improved before, there was a subtle strobe effect when the bulbs were dimmed but that is absent now. These bulbs keep getting better. It's been almost a year since they were replaced and there have been no signs of trouble. I'll update this review as needed.

I originally ordered some cheaper GU10 dimmable LEDs and was disappointed by the harsh, bluish light so I searched around and eventually found these bulbs. They are more expensive, but definitely worth it if you want softer light. I can deal with harsh light on the porch, but it's unappetizing to say the least in the kitchen. These lights aren't quite as warm as halogen GU10 bulbs, but they are pretty good for LEDs. The light is relatively soft and relatively warm. I'm sure LED technology will continue to improve, but in the meantime if you want to make the switch, these are the bulbs for you. Plus, I'm sure LightKiwi is constantly working to improve their product so these bulbs will probably only get better over time.

Not much to be said they do what they say. About as much light as the 50W halogens I'm replacing, and a similar warm tone. The only potential problem is that they are a quarter inch or so longer than the halogens. They JUST fit into my IKEA lighting track, but it's a tight fit. Could be a problem for other fittings buy one and try it before buying several.

We bought three of these to replace some halogen bulbs that had burned out. They are nice, but we paid $11.00 per bulb here in early October. They run cooler and should last a long time. But the 100% price hike bums me out.

Honest reviews on Lightkiwi GU10 led light bulb Dimmable CREE LEDs 3x3w Warm White

These Lightkiwi bulbs are IMO the best value for halogen replacement as of December 2012.

light quality and output rivaling halogen

very good light dispersion

made with high quality components from CREE

same size as standard GU10 (doesn't stick out)

Please note that by 'best value' I do not necessarily mean cheapest.

I originally bought some 'Lighting Ever' units in a misguided attempt to save some cash.

They were offensive blue laser beams unacceptable for residential lighting.

if you care about quality then suck it up and buy these lightkiwi's!

We recently remodeled our home and in the process replaced all of our outdoor lighting and flood lights with these two and three head Lithonia LED Motion detection and dusk to dawn lights. They are a bit pricey but I feel worth the cost when you consider the typical halogen 100 and 200 watt bulb replacement once or twice a year.

I was a bit sceptical about how bright an LED could be but was pleasantly surprised when I turned on the first one. These babies are very bright with an excellent daylight white color. Each head is about 10 watts. So the two head is a total of 20 watts and the three head is 30 watts. My total wattage will be reduced by magnatudes. It will take awhile for the lights to pay for themselves but not having to replace halogen bulbs is a big plus in and of itself.

I installed 10 of these units with a total of 24 heads totaling 240 watts. They replaced 14 halogen and incandescent lights that totaled 1,400 watts.

Easy to install. Some (round base) have a foam rubber weather seal others (rectangular base) need to have silicone caulk to weather seal.

A truly wonderful product that is well worth the premium price.

Recently purchased a new home and the floodlights included on the home were pretty terrible. They shot direct beams everywhere (not providing much "flood" light), and they were halogen which became hot and consumed quite a bit of power.

I have been surfing Amazon in order to determine the bed LED floodlight's that I could find. The primary worry I had was how bright these would be.

Once purchased and installed, I was quite amazed at the fact that they were much brighter than even the halogen's that were installed previously. The best part was that they provided a much more uniform light source in my backyard. One additional plus is that it's a bright white light (don't really like the yellowish floodlight's out there).

Installation was relatively easy, with the exception of the mounting plate for one of them that came slightly bent (assume this was a shipping issue). It was easy for me to adjust and still install properly.

It seems like motion detection sensitivity has quite a lot of temperature dependency. Higher sensitivity at lower temperature I guess.

I've had this installed for about a year now. It was great through the winter when it was new. However, even though it isn't on every night it has already lost probably 2/3rds of it's brightness and a couple of the led "bulbs" have burned out. I'm pretty disappointed and expected more for the price and from lithonia.

DECISION

I wanted to replace 2 halogen lights (each with 2 heads) which were 75w each and didn't last as long as I'd like which isn't convenient when the lights are pretty expensive. After reading a lot of reviews I decided on these Lithonia OFLR 9LC 120 MO BZ LED Outdoor Floodlights with 3 heads each. They had the features I wanted including motion sensing, dusk to dawn sensing, and LED. Only one of these replaced one of my halogen lights, and I installed the other to a location that didn't previously have a light. The other halogen was replaced by a carriage light because my wife wanted to have a standard light on our patio.

USE AND FUNCTIONALITY

I placed each at opposite sides of my long back yard and they cover the whole backside of my house. The 2 of these lights' wattage (11w x 6 heads) doesn't even add up to one of the halogen bulbs in my previous flood lights (75w x 4 heads), and they cover more than double the space. I love that there are 3 heads per light, and each light can be pointed in any desired direction, also with the motion sensor can be pointed in most any direction.

I currently have them set at full sensitivity and 10 minutes ON TIME. I don't have the motion sensors pointed down that far and they still pick up my dogs when they are in the backyard which is the main reason I needed flood lights. Beyond my yard is a canyon and unless there is light the dogs tend to bark at anything, much less so when the lights are on.

CONCLUSION

I would definitely recommend these for anyone who needs flood lights. The brightness is different from my halogens, but in a good way, they seem more daylight than just bright. Also as usual Amazon Prime got these to me in 2 days and in perfect condition.

OK, I just unpacked this because it appeared there might have been some shipping damage so I had to check it out immediately. A more thorough review will follow but here are my initial thoughts:

1) From the other review here I was concerned that this light may not throw enough light. YIKES! I wouldn't use this light to illuminate a huge room but it throws off a TON of light with both tubes on. If you were in any way not considering this light because of the "too dim" comment from the other review, don't let that stop you! This makes me wonder if the other reviewer had both tubes turned on (they're on individual switches) or if his light was somehow defective.

2) I was looking for a worklight that threw a good amount of light, that DID NOT use a battery so I could skip all of those battery related issues, and that was TALL so I could put it on the floor and have it illuminate things clearly that were 4-5' off the ground. I was really looking for a tripod as well for stability. From my very brief experimenting this light appears to satisfy all these requirements although the tripod will require some fiddling with before it acts as a stable base.

3) This light comes with a seriously thick and long cord and has an outlet on the base of the light to plug other items into (it claims you can draw up to 13 amps this way).

Initial impressions -wow, great light, just what I was looking for!

As I use the light I'll update the review.

The lights themselves work great and the housing seem rugged enough. All the hooks and stands are very delicate. After one room renovation, the stand lost a leg and both of the lights had lost a hook or two. We resorted to just hanging the lights from bungee cords. I'd gladly pay a little more and have some heavy duty hooks built into the light.

Still, these lights got the job done. I wanted to avoid leaving my 1000 watt halogen light on during the whole project, these definitely helped.

I ordered an anvil from Harbor Freight once, saw a picture of what I thought was you standard sized anvil, and for the price I was certain it would not be spectacular in design or size, it's a typical shop anvil, right?. To my surprise, the delivery man is hauling a 150 pound box to my door! Inside was this 3 foot long gargantuan ACME roadrunner cartoon sized anvil the kind I guess they use in train car repair shops or something. The ProTech light came to me in the same fashion, a long flower box to which I was certain was a car muffler I ordered, but inside was this 3ft long light! I decided to keep it. The dual switches, 25ft cord, and outlet at the handle alone cannot be had anywhere at 20 bucks; however its size/weight make it too heavy to wand at the wrist, so I use it as pictured. I went shopping again for the typical LED 'drop' light, for the thin bulbs inside the ProTech wouldn't survive a 'drop'. I also discovered that 30 watts of fluorescent light is not sufficient to work in dim garage bays under a hood, and 60 watts of your typical drop light gets too hot to rest or hang near expensive car interiors or non-metal parts in the engine bay, so I need something bright, light, versatile and cool, and in industry speak those features translates to more money.

I bought the MA-T51-WH switch because it was a good looking countdown timer with increments up to 60 minutes as well as an always-on mode. I also liked the fact that it didn't require a neutral connection... until I installed it and found out that the lack of a neutral caused a problem.

I have a fan and fluorescent light which are connected to the switch, and when I pushed the switch, it would turn on for a moment then turn off for a second or two and then turn on again (and stay on). After contacting Lutron technical support (which is excellent), I learned that the lack of a neutral connection makes the switch less robust for certain types of loads. It probably works for most people, but since it didn't work for me, they recommended that I get the same model of switch that also has a neutral connection (MA-T51MN-WH). Since I have a neutral connection in my switch box, this wasn't a problem for me. The neutral connection did the trick and now the switch turns on as it should. One more thing that I learned is that the model without the neutral can have the two wire leads connected in either order, but once a switch with a neutral connection is added, the order of the live leads is very important. If they are connected in the wrong order, the switch won't work.

Now that I have the correct switch and all the wires connected correctly, it's working admirably. If you have a neutral connection in your switch box, you may want to play it safe and just get the switch with the neutral. It only costs a little bit more and could save you some trouble.

This is a very easy timer to install, and I am happy with it....

I basically just removed the plate, unplugged the existing wires, and plugged in the new ones. Had to fiddle with the grounding wire a bit (not an issue with the product....it was an issue with what was available in the junction box), but eventually managed to get a good connection to the existing grounds. This outlet supports both screw type terminals, and plug in terminals for 14 gauge wire (14 gauge max size for plug in terminals). No neutral wire is required. Apparently, the NEC allows you to also not ground the thing under very specific circumstances where a ground is not available. I had a ground available, so I used it.

Note the following:

This timer has a maximum current load rating of 5A (~600W). It is probably not appropriate for heating lamps (at least, it will be a close thing for these items check your application). If you have a very tight fit in the junction box, you have to remove some metal fins from the side of the switch, and this will reduce the load rating by 1A or so.

The timer has good features you can use the rocker switch on the side to adjust the timer from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. It also has an "manual off" mode, activated by pressing the switch twice quickly. This turns on the switch until you manually turn it off. Nice feature....

It has an "off override" (used when changing lights, etc.) to ensure that power is shut off to the switched circuit. There is a little plastic piece you pull out from the front of the switch to activate this mode.

On the negative side:

The switch feels a little bit cheap and rickety....it's not super "solid". If you place your finger on the switch and move your finger slightly, the plastic switch will move a little bit...it's a little bit loose. Not a big deal, and I don't have any concerns about longevity/reliability it's just simply an aesthetic issue.

I haven't measured this, but I think there may be a very small (less than 1W?) amount of standby power used when the switch is OFF. It feels very slightly warm to the touch when the switch has been off for a while. Again, I'm not sure about this. It also may be normal for these types of switches.

For certain, there is some loss in the switch when it is in the ON position. The switch warms up slightly when the switched circuit is drawing current. Not sure how much loss there is, probably a few % of the load wattage. I suppose this is normal for these types of switches, but I don't really know.

-----------------

Edit:

This switch is still going strong. I like it! I recently discovered (reading documentation on Lutron website), that there are a couple of nice features that I didn't know about, which can be useful in certain situations:

You can make sure that the timer ALWAYS reverts back to a certain "timeout" period (say 15 minutes), even if someone manually adjusts it one time to make the period shorter or longer. This is useful if you have kids fiddling with the lights, or someone who doesn't know how to use it, and they accidentally adjust the timeout period. This way, you don't always have to be adjusting it back to the right setting (say, for a bathroom fan, you might always want 30 minutes of run time).

You can override the "double-click" function, which normally turns the light on without timer (it stays on until turned off). If you always want the light to turn off, without the possibility of it staying on indefinitely, you can change the mode of the switch so that a double click will result in the maximum timeout period (60 minutes).

Both of these modes are accessed via a relatively simple programming sequence pull out the FASS switch, hold the switch button down, push FASS switch back in while continuing to hold down switch button for 5 more seconds. Then you use a sequence of pushes and selections using the small rocker switch to navigate through the "menus". See the Lutron site for more information. I didn't see this information in the manual that came with the switch....

As a commercial and residential electrician for over 14 years, I have been a fan of Lutron Products. I have always like the sleek styling of their dimming switches, with the small sliders . One of the reasons i bought this switch over the Leviton (Leviton LTB30-1LZ) one was it does not need a neutral for it to work. I also like the tap twice to turn on ( and by passing the countdown timer ). I use this in a small bathroom to control the fan ( Panasonic ) as i like to let it run a few minutes after a shower to full vent out the moisture, and the easy tap up or down to adjust the time works well. Installation was simple, 3 wires, the ground wire, the hot and the switch leg. That's it. The switch does not get hot since it's not dimming. The switch is a bit bulky, and it's not a problem if you do not have a lot of wire coming in or out of the switch box, in my case i had a separate feed for my lighting.

Honest reviews on Lutron MA-T51-WH Maestro Countdown Timer, White

I agree with several of the reviewers here who have noted that this will not work with many newer fans. This does not work with my 80 CFM Panasonic, which is a modern, moderate size fan that draws 25 watts. For best compatibility with any fan, Lutron recommends the MA-T51MN instead.

this a great simple countdown timer switch for exhaust fans or whatever you want to set to run and then shut off automatically after a predetermined period of time (adjustable). Best thing is that it works in a switch loop wiring configuration which means you don't need a common (white) wire in the box to make it work. Connect the green to the ground and the other two wires to the two terminals (doesn't matter which one where) and you are good to go.

Just leave the light switch on... The light comes on as promissed. Quality product and build. I placed the light in a recessed lighting can in our bathroom. The light comes on at night no fumbling. The light is clean just the right temperature. The light has a sensor so it won't turn on in daylight when it's not needed. It also stays on for a reasonable amount of time (about two minutes) . The time is not adjustable.

I like the concept so very much, I am trying to figure out where else I could use it. I am considering a covered, but outside porch location so the light greats visitors. I don't, however, think this is recommended by the manufacturer for outside use.

Update... My one critisicm is that it continually draws 0.5 watts to maintain the motion sensor. This works out to 12 watt hours per day. So not as great an energy saver as one might think. If it is used in a location where the light is required several times an evening then go for it, but to place this in a seldom accessed location like a storage closet, it will use electricity even if you only go to that closet once a week. My logic my be faulty, but I'd rather switch on a light once a week rather than use 84 watts per week ( .5 watts per hour= 12watts per day = 84watts per week at a minimum even if is OFF the entire time) on the chance that I might access the location and not have a hand free to turn on a light.

Just my opinion

I just bought this light recently and I was so impressed that I bought one more for our hallway. It was bright enough and the sensor worked great. For around $30, if it will last 5 years, it was worth it. I was planning to buy more for the bathrooms. However, less than 2 months after I bought the first lamp, it busted. I put a different LED lamp in the same light recess and it worked. I changed my mind. I think I just lost $33. Buy more? Let us see how long the 2nd bulb I bought will last.

I have purchased 2 so far and need 3 more. I figured at the current price it would be best to test them prior to using. I have 5 pull string light fixtures in the basement and I have never seen a product work as good as these for easy on/off efficiency.

Plan to purchase 3 more and create an easy cost effective lighting system.

I feel I could see a ROI of less than 2 years based on the young children that play in the basement. I had lights left on for days on end if I did not look.

Highly recommend this for basements that are not finished.....Absolutely amazing and much brighter than I had anticipated.

Excellent product. Light emitted is quite warm and very pleasing. Not the harsh blue of some other LED lights. Recommended. Even though seems a trifle expensive the low electrical consumption and long life of the bulb makes the cost VERY favorable.

Works exactly as advertised; so good that I ordered 4 more. I'm removing the industrial looking motion & light sensor floodlights on each corner of the house with one simple bulb that bright enough to do it all and it's attractive in appearance. Works outside in the rain without any cover other than a socket to screw into. Also I'm saving even more energy burning less than half the wattage of the previous energy saver light bulb it's replacing. A great product. I will also be placing them throughout the house in the hallways, porch and most rooms (not the bedrooms) with the light switches turned on. They only come on when its dark and turn off after there is no motion detected. A great product. The design of this bulb with its all in one do all circuit seems to make it a technology leader. This bulb is now on my Shopping List to buy more. DO NOT ENCLOSE IN A LIGHT SHADE/COVER.

we needed lights for our ceiling fan but the regular bulbs were just way to bright. I saw these and bought two for the light. They provide around a 20 watt (old fashioned measurement)

They come on in an instant. I have now acquired a number of Philips new LED bulbs. Have them mostly where lower light output is needed. Such as lights on bookshelf's, mantles etc....

Of course they claim these will last 18.3 years. :) I can only hope BUT I have recently decided to begin saving the back paper with bar code and a print out of the receipt. I intend on making them honor there claims. While Philips is proud of this somewhat outlandish long life..... the small print on the paper says they warrant them for 6 years. So if they do not last I will make them live up to the 6 year warranty. As always IF I run into problems with this bulb I will update this review.

Note: I bought these via amazon so they were 13bucks a piece with free shipping. Came back to buy two more and see they are out. I will wait for amazon or go local and try again to find......but previous experience showed not in my local stores.

I have been slowly replacing all the regular bulbs in my house with LEDs. I got these for the light fixtures in the fan in the master bedroom and so far they've worked out great!

Best Deals for Philips 411645 AccentLED 3-Watt A15 Fan Light Bulb

This is a nice bulb with good light color and output, but most of the fans in my house are on dimmers and these bulbs are not dimmable. I found that I'd rather have the LED bulbs installed than the dimmers on the lights, so I just swapped the switches back for the dimmers and kept the bulbs.

One bulb I received came to me broken in the case, but Amazon refunded me for that without issues. That's the risk of buying stuff like light bulbs online--my advice would be to take them all out and test them as soon as you get them vs. putting them on a shelf someplace and waiting to find out they don't work later.

I was looking for an LED bulb to use in my bedside lamp. I first tried a 25-watt equivalent, but that was too bright and way too blue-white, so I moved on to this one which is a 15-watt equivalent with a warm (2700 K) rating. The result was to replace a way-too-bright bulb with one that comes very close to a 15-watt incandescent.

Unlike other manufacturers (e.g., GE), Philips puts the Light Appearance rating on the back of the package.

At a max this product should retail for fifteen bucks (it's a few dollars less at Home Depot).
