The main positive is the huge operation button that easily works with gloves or cold fingers in the dark. Many other headlamps have tiny buttons I find difficult to work in the comfort of my own home. Next, I don't have to press the button 3 or more times to cycle through all the modes like other headlamps just to turn it off (red, green, high, low, dispersed beam, focused beam, etc.). I find all those modes unnecessary for night fishing. Next, pressing the button 1/2 way gives me light and releasing the button shuts it off. Or, I can press to hear a click and I have ample light to find my way down a path in the woods and my hands are full. "1-Watt" is not accurate. A watt is a unit of power and lumens are measures of light. This unit is 50 lumens, which I find to be plenty for what I do. Other headlamps advertise "very bright", "20 LED" which means nothing. It is like saying I have 40 bright bulbs in my house, but the house would be dim if they were all 5 watt. I can fish 7 hours a night for a month turning it on and off to bait up or unhook my fish before I notice it getting dimmer. When we lose power at home, the wife and I put on these headlamps rotating the light on the ceiling so we don't blind each other and have no problem negotiating around the house. I've had one headlamp where the ratchet broke and another where the screw on battery cap cracked, but still better than 15 or so headlamps I experimented with on display in stores for the reasons mentioned above. The original one was purchased at Walmart 10 years ago for $15, but alas, Walmart and most other stores do not carry this product, thus I had to go to Amazon. This maybe available at stores that sell automobile detailing supplies, because that seems to be it's main use. There is a lot of talk about losing night vision by just having a white light. I'm 65 and I see no need for red lights, because my eyes have to adjust to them as well. I've shopped and purchased 2 other more expensive headlamps and was not as pleased and returned them. I know I paid a premium price as compared to 10 years, but I feel it was worth it and purchased 2. These come right from the Brinkmann factory through Amazon. Purchasing through Brinkmann directly is even more expensive. In this case, it is cheaper to buy through a middle man. I think Brinkmann does not want to be a retailer. Try and figure that one out when they will ship 2 for Amazon. To each his own, but I prefer a light that just goes on and off easily because it avoids a lot of frustration among which would be trying to operate a difficult button and blinding myself with the reflection off my own hand. Now for a few words about Amazon. I use eBay, Shopzilla, etc, and frequently end up back at Amazon for 3 reasons. They have even odd ball stuff like pinfish traps and in most cases a lower price and good service. I've never had a complaint to really test their service. If you look, all the information, like how long it will take to ship and so forth is up front. I get emails saying it is in the mail. Oh yeah, if you fish, check out the Bait Tamer for a better minnow bucket (you put the Bait Tamer in your own cheap bucket and it lasts forever) and for the best price, get it on Amazon.Brinkmann 809-1037-0 1-Watt LED Headlamp

My neighbor has used this headlamp for years and I just used a flashlight and tried to advoid working outside when it was dark. I was forced to do some home repairs during the winter when it is dark by the time I got home. After an hour or so of fumbling with the flashlight, I went to the home improvement store and bought the best headlamp they had in stock. Regrettably it wasn't a Brinkman. My neighbor saw me working outside and came over to help. He had his headlamp and I instantly realized his headlamp was far superior to the one I had just purchased. I asked where he had purchased his and he said Wal-Mart, but they no longer carried them.
I did an internet search and found the Brinkmann 1 watt light on Amazon. I ordered one immediately and have been very happy with it for several months. It is very bright. The brightness varies with the condition of the batteries, but the batteries last a long time. The light beam is focused so when you are doing close up work you have to move your head instead of your eyes. Being able to refocus the beam to wide angle would be a nice addition, but it is not a big problem.
My previous headlamp required taking off your gloves and pressing the on button five time to get to the setting I wanted. I wasn't interested in flashing lights or colored lights. With the Brinkmann you can push the on button with your gloves on and you only have to push it once.
It helps to wear a cap when wearing this headlamp for long periods of time. If I needed to wear a headlamp for long periods of time I would spend 10 times more. I used the headlamp for 4 hours once and I was ready to take it off. I wasn't a terrible discomfort, this just isn't the right light for hikers or cave explorers. It is perfect for the homeowner or handy man.

I used this light for night paddling the Texas Water Safari in 2008, and I was amazed at how much light it put out on just 1 watt, 1 bulb and 3 AAA batteries. It is the brightest 1 watt headlamp I have seen.Honest reviews on Brinkmann 809-1037-0 1-Watt LED Headlamp
Nothing much to add to the other 5 star reviews other than my endorsement. Have used this 1 watt headlamp for several years. It has held up well. I'd guess it puts out about 100 lumens of light, enough for night rides on my bicycle. I actually removed the strap and screwed the light to my helmet once when touring. Light where ever I pointed my head. Good light.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Brinkmann 809-1037-0 1-Watt LED Headlamp
When new, this was a wonderful headlight. It offered plenty of light to work outside at night, to do anything. The switch has never failed once and is well-placed. The switch can be operated even with heavy gloves on. The light pattern is perfect.
This headlamp can be counted on to work as intended for a few years.
However, the ratcheting mechanism that allows the head to be adjusted to position, will break or wear-out, because it relies on a plastic leaf spring and on plastic bumps on the housing for friction. Oh! How cheap. Obviously, the light is nearly useless when it will not stay in position.
Another item that wears out is the elastic headband. Now, all elastic eventually wears out, but this is a big nuisance because the headlight is front-heavy. I don't know for sure if the headbands can be purchased as a repair part, I have not seen them.
I sent an e-mail to Brinkmann's customer service, but it went unanswered.
To keep this light functioning, I replaced the headband with fabric-store-bought elastic tied onto the light with a square knot. As the elastic loses its tension over time, the knot can be re-positioned. This has been working well.
To made the lamp stay put after the ratchet broke, I bypassing it, replacing the thin waterproofing o-ring on the battery cap with a very fat one, for a friction-fit when the battery cap is tightened against it. I had to clearance the body a little with a Dremel tool hasp to make room for the fat o-ring. The tighter the end cap is screwed-down, the tighter the position of the lamp. It can be locked solidly that way. My design simple and easily fixable, just replace the o-ring when it cracks.
With a LED that should last for years and years, it would be nice if the other components of a headlamp had been long-lasting.
I use 3AAA low-shelf-drain rechargable batteries, using a Diehard charger I bought at Kmart. It will charge odd numbers of batteries, unlike all the rest of the chargers sold in the typical retail stores.
I still use the light, glad I could modify it to keep it going, so I give it an overall positive mark.
