After using one of these for a couple of months I bought two more. Two serve on my bandsaw and drill press, respectively, and the third does double duty on the radial arm saw and tablesaw, which are situated for easy access to each other.MAGNET: although the description doesn't say so, I believe it is rare-earth. I cannot pick it straight up off my tablesaw's cast iron table, and must either slide it off the edge or tip it into the miter channel. It doesn't cling as forcefully to the pressed metal cover of the radial saw's arm, nor to the wheel case of the bandsaw; although its grip is trustworthy, I can easily tilt it to remove it. I believe this has to do with the thinness of the metal and the fact that the lamp is clinging horizontally with most of its weight on the other end of its flexible arm.
BRIGHTNESS: two of these are quite bright and clearly illuminate tape-measure marks that aren't easily read by ceiling-mount flourescent light. The diameter of the lighted circle is about 12"-14" at its best viewing distance, which is fine since tight focus is the reason for buying a light like this. The third light is noticeably less bright than the others and its lighted circle diameter is more like 8" since I have to move it closer to the blade or bit. This may indicate a fluctuation in quality, but I suspect it is actually that this light is the first I bought and is showing its age, or that I have left it burning between woodworking sessions (which could sometimes mean for days). In daylight it's impossible to see that the light is on without looking directly into it.
RECOMMEND? Absolutely! I've already "recommended" it to myself twice.

The magnet is super strong, the light is super bright, overall this is a super deal, I just bought my 4th as they are so versatile in my shop for supplemental light. They stick any steel surface. The self contained aspect is especially good when used around my lathe and other spinning tools as there are no cords to cause a foul-up. Battery life is good unless you leave them on all night like I did. I now keep rechargeable AAAs so I always have power. I bought this light to attach to a portable industrial sewing machine and the flexible holder works wonderful and the magnet is super strong and stays in place during my work. I did have a small issue with the light flickering rapidly while the machine was vibrating and found that the battery contacts needed to be a little tighter to make a better connection. The problem was easily fixed by slightly bending the battery holders contacts to make a tighter fit. The light is very bright and is more than ample for my needs.
