Cheap GE 17401 Motion Activated Porta-Light Night Light

I just purchased this GE Motion Activated Porta-Light, and it works just fine. I noticed the other customer review was low, because the purchaser indicated the light would not activate in the dark. For those of you who do not understand what "Passive Infared" means you can check out the link below, but this light does not have to actually detect "Motion" it has to detect a change of temperature/radiation. There are motion detectors that have a direct line of sight (beam), that if you cross it will activate. This unit does not operate like that. I hope the other user has resolved his problem or returned the item, as it may have been defective. But, I have mine in a dark bathroom, with no other lights in the surrounding area on, and it detects immediately. I looked for one of these back in 2008 and couldn't find anything remotely close other than a unit that cost something like $32.00. I'm thinking about buying at least one more. I hope my review can help someone.

I bought this light from Walmart to shed some light on the toilet at night. It is in a toilet room with no outlet for a traditional nightlight. I was skeptical about how well it would work and im here to say that id use it instead of a tradional nightlight now.

This light not only senses movement very well and turns on but it also senses light and wont turn on during the day. It is not so bright as to hurt your eyes at night and it sure beats turning on the big light or sitting down to pee.

This is a very well designed item. It simply works, just as advertised. Uses simple batteries, and they seem to last forever in this light. Very sensitive motion detector. Great item for traveling too. Every house should have one of these.

On motion-activated mode, it turns on instantly, stays on for a 30-second minimum, and then shuts itself off. On the 'always-on' manual mode, I got 3+ days of constant light out of a set of old NiMH AAA batteries. This item is a 'keeper'

We bought the exact same model at a store 4 years ago, and it worked beautifully until a battery leaked. I bought two of these from Amazon because they are so useful in our stairwell and I could not find them anymore in the stores. The motion detector is FAULTY in both of the lights I bought recently. I am very disappointed.
