You could never justify buying a battery for this light but it is a good space to store any spare you might have. You'll always know where to find your spare battery and if the power goes out, it is a very good emergency light.

If already have the Hitachi batteries for other tools, this is a great addition. Works really well. The LED feature is largely worthless to me since it emits so little light, but I didn't really buy it for that. The Fluorescent tube gives a lot of light.

Subsequent EDIT: I'm going to add an additional comment. I've discovered that the light has a tendency to think the battery is drained when it is not. So the light automatically switches from flourescent mode into LED mode. If you shut it off for a 20 or 30 seconds and turn it back on again, it works, but it's a bit annoying. I suspect what happens is that sometimes the battery starts to get too hot after it's been used for 20 or 30 minutes (maybe a little more) and starts to limit current as a protective measure. It may be that this light was designed for the older (NiCad?) style batteries and, even though it's also theoretically compatible with the new Lithium Ion batteries, this little quirk shows up. Or perhaps 18v is too much for it even though it says it can take 14.4 to 18v. It's not the end of the world, but I would probably rerate it to 4 stars if I could.

I ordered this lantern because I already own two Hitachi Lithium Ion 18 volt batteries and the price was very reasonable. The product is well constructed and will likely give years of service. The fluorescent bulb provides shadow-free light for working. The single LED works well in total darkness and would be fine for lighting the way while walking to the job or along a highway.

I was looking for a light to add to my Hitachi Lithium Ion set. I already had the light that could stand on the battery pack and had the head that would rotate up and down, in fact my son managed to tip it such the bulb broke replaced the bulb and it works fine again.

If you are considering this light, no doubt you also love the hitachi battery powered tool line

I was looking for a light that I could hang when I was working on the car and also could be used when power was out a concern in Hurricane Country this light fits the bill fine. I have the corded work light but this battery powered light is more convenient and also since I can hang it more useful than the rotating head light as I found it difficult at times to sit that light down and have it adjusted such that the light was where I needed it...

I have the light hanging at my battery charging stand in the garage so it is easily accessible when I need it, good price ($15). Another cheap option to add to the tool kit to reduce aggravation when trying to get "things" done.

pls note this lamp and the other I refer to use the "older" style battery that does not slide into place, you can still buy this battery on Amazon Hitachi 326241 EBM1830 18-Volt Lithium-Ion 3.0 Ah HXP Battery.

We just got through superstorm Sandy with no electricity for six days. I was using the halogen Hitachi light which was very bright but it lasted less than 1 hour per charge. I ordered this Hitachi fluorescent lantern for future power outages. The fluorescent lantern comes WITHOUT a battery, is well built, and fits nicely to my two Hitachi 18V Lithium batteries. It is bright enough for book reading and good for also for walking around at night. It supposes to last several hours per charge. The LED light is just one single LED, not useful, but the wiring is exposed. So just for kick, I jam in 2 additional 3V white LEDs to get more light. I probably can connect it to a brighter 3V LED assembly (like from a broken flashlight) and get more focus light if I have one. Overall, I think the lantern price is ok, not great. Hitachi should have thrown in a no extra charge a battery case that can accept AA battery for this lantern, then it would be a great price.
