I returned these because the bulbs were actually about 5 1/2" long, not the 4" stated in the description. They didn't fit in my fixtures. Too bad, because I like the look!

I replaced 35 40w incadescent which equals 1400 watts on my 7 post lamps outside my house With 28 of these bulbs which only equals 360 Watts. They are slight thicker so I could not fit the 5 in each lamp fixture Also check the height becasue they are longer than normal torpedo shaped. But these are brighter than the 5 40 watt that use to be in each fixture. Great bulb and now I'm greener.

I have a dining room fixture that uses 5 40w decorative bulbs. I've had a hard time finding good replacements. Usually they're really dim. These fit fine, although they're pretty tall. They take a minute or so to warm up, but once warm they are as bright as the 40w bulbs. 75% savings in power is nice too. Hopefully I get good life out of these.

Honest reviews on GE Lighting 85388 Energy Smart CFL 9-Watt (40-watt replacement)

They look nothing like the pretty "flame" bulbs they replaced but they are using 1/4 the power and not adding excessive heat to the room. I like that part.

To the negative, these bulbs are just ugly. I was hoping they would not be as ugly as the photo, but they are even uglier "in person".

Uglier still is the black lettering all over the base of the bulb. It would have been nice if GE would have printed all that technical info on a removable sticker and left the base of the bulb clean and white but I guess that is too much to ask.

My petty ranting aside, the bulbs work well enough. They do take about a minute to come up to full brightness but that is OK with me especially if it means the bulbs will last longer coming on slowly like that. I'm hoping they will last a long time since they are not all that cheap.

I'm happy with the purchase, I just wish they were not as ugly

As others have noted, it is long. I have 3 in a fan, but really like the brightness. Fan came with 3 25-watt incandescent and now I have 3 9-watt CFL in a shape that is much better than the spiral CFL. If anyone knows a bright bulb like this and smaller size and 9-watt or less, please let me know.

Instead of 75-watts, I am now using only 27-watts. I should not that it takes time to warm up. I tried 3 other bulbs than this one. 1 was a GE LED which used 2.5-watt, but the light output was around 10-15-watts. Another was a 4-watt CFL in a nice vanity style bulb, but had same or worse light output as the GE LED. Another I tried was a LED from CostoCo, but 1 bulb went bad after a week. Glad I found a GE-brand CFL on Amazon dot com.
