I have a four year old son who loves flashlights. He loves them so much he likes to leave them on, sometimes for days on end. I tried a couple of the 3x AAA multiple led cheapies, all of which just seemed to eat batteries and I just got wore out swapping the rechargeables in and out of my charger.

My next thought was to find a flashlight with some form of auto-off mechanism that maybe turned off after several hours of not being moved. Have any of you found anything like this? Not me. I also considered one of the shake or crank models but them seemed too complicated for a 4 year old to manage.

Then I noticed the reviews for this one. 4 year old's favorite color is green. That's good enough for 5 stars in his book but what fascinated me was the reviews that stated that it works well and maintains brightness on old mostly used AA's. I've got several devices that just don't work well on rechargables and eat regular AA's for lunch. Hence, I have a large bag of half (or more) used AA's that register a red or yellow light on my battery tester that have been sitting around for months waiting to get recycled. What a great way to use these up so I wouldn't feel like I was wasting them by recycling them when they still had some life.

So much for that idea! I bought the Gerber, put one of the yellow (proably half used or more) AA's in the light thinking it would last a few days or until the flashight got left on overnight. When he left it on, no biggie, I'd have plenty more batteries where that came from. Three weeks later and the light is going strong. It does not look like this is going to be a solution for using up my old AA's and I'll likely never work my through the bag. But I found the perfect solution for a flashlight for my son.

IF YOU USE AA'S FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE, IT'S HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT YOU'LL EVER NEED TO BUY A BATTERY FOR THIS FLASHLIGHT.

The light is not good for long distances, but suits my 4 year old just fine for getting around the house at night. It's more than adequate for him to wake us up by shinging it in our eyes in the middle of the night and also works fine for short trips around the block walking the dogs at night. I plan on taking it along as a spare backup emergency light on backpacking trips as well.

This flashlight is remarkable.

I'm usually a big fan of Gerber products and own several of their knives and multi-tools. This was disappointing. I accidentally dropped this in some water while working outside and it hasn't worked since. It also can't be taken apart to access the bulb so self repair or cleaning is not an option.

I am another who has a older infinity.

It's a great utility flashlight

I am looking to get another to have arround. It seems my wife has my old one which we used on a vacation trip to her parrent place by the lake.

Brighter flashlights have there place.

Becasue this is a task light, the power switch is perfect. you don't need to keep turning it on and off, because it runs for so long. Just leave it on while your working on the project. It is much easier to find when you put it down. and it uses a standard battery.

I wear it on a lanyard when I need it.

Great for a 72 hour survival kit. Pocket light, glove box light.

Compared to other single AA LED flashlights, the Infinity Ultra is hard to beat.

But there's a misconception I'd like to try and clear up. The battery life is not exactly 100 hours. Sure, the flashlight will probably make SOME light for 100 hours but not the brilliant light you see on a new battery. This light has a regulated circuit which maintains a steady bright light until the battery gets too low. Then it emits a feeble (but still useful) light which gets weaker and weaker until the battery expires. The really bright period ranges from 3 to 10 hours depending on what kind of AA battery you use. After that, you can expect a VERY rapid dropoff in illumination until the light is about 95% weaker. That 5% remnant is still better than nothing and is often good enough that you won't feel the need to change the battery. This is normal behaviour for the many, many led flashlights that use regulated circuits. The alternative, without such a circuit, is for the light to be REALLY bright and then get steadily weaker as the battery runs down.

Here's a handy tip for using the clip. Wear a baseball cap and you can clip the light to the bill of the cap and have an headlight which is outstanding when working in close spaces or when you need both hands.

Summing up, the Ultra is a outstanding flashlight to have around the house and small and light enough that you might as well stuff it in your pocket when you leave.

Bought two of these almost 3 years ago, one was stolen, other I used as a poop scoop light attached on my dog's Flexi leash mini saddlebags(which keep ball and plastic bags)Its been slammed hard on concrete about 15 times, dog is a 20lb terrier with very fast take off time. Aluminum was really scuffed light worked until recently.Beam is good enough for walking at night in city,would make a good backup for camping, but not as main light. Am ordering another. Beautiful machined aluminum. I think these should last many years with normal use. I would say mine was worked really hard.
