We use this to light up our pet cemetery underneath several large maple trees. Had to splice in an additional 25 ft. of wire so that the solar panel could be in the sun. Mounted the solar panel atop a 4 ft. 1/2 in. PVC hammered into the ground. Despite the additional resistance the light is brighter than we expected.

Easy to set up, no additional batteries and works even on cloudy days in northern NJ. We recommend this and will be buying a second one for our pond soon.

I was hoping to find a simple way to light our house's street number each evening. After seeing that all the cheaper solar spotlights were rated poorly, I decided to splurge and get this more expensive model with a larger, separate panel. When it runs, the light is a perfect soft light that illuminates our sign exactly as I'd hoped. Unfortunately, it never seems to get enough charge to last more than minutes and nowhere near the alleged 4-6 hours. I've fiddled with adjusting the panel location and angle but nothing seems to make a difference. I've checked the instructions, the wiring, the switches and so on, all to no avail. I suspect that the panel/light might work better somewhere that gets many hours of strong sunlight every day. Though we do get a fair amount of direct daylight in our location, apparently New Jersey in the winter is insufficiently bright for this unit to deliver on its promise.

UPDATE 2/23/13:

After a continuous stretch of sunny days and after fiddling more with the location and angle of the solar panel, the light now works reliably each night for about two to four hours. It remains very sensitive to the amount of bright daytime light it receives and, on cloudy winter days, won't go more than a couple of hours. This is far less than the promised four to six hours but much better than the few minutes of light it provided when first set up.

If you live someplace very sunny and/or can live with just a couple of hours of light on darker days, this is a reasonable option.

Returned this .5 watt spotlight in exchange for a 1 watt model from the same manufacturer. The brighter version works well as a highlight for a tree at the end of our driveway, here in Puget Sound. We will see how well it performes this winter.
