Worked really well right out of the box, as per the instructions I let it charge first before using (although the instructions contradict and say to charge 8 hours and in a different spot 24 hours) before using.

Sensor works well, further than I expected for a battery powered unit, and the light is bright and even. The 45 cool white (blue white typical of white LEDs) LEDs work well, and really make the difference. Much brighter than the 3 or 4 LED spot lights and solar lights with halogen spot lights.

It uses a Lithium Ion battery pack.

Features:

> On / Off / Auto (sensor) selector switch

> Selectable duration on after motion stops variable "time on" knob (up to 60 seconds and as short as 10 seconds)

> Daylight sensitivity variable setting from full darkness to variations in daylight (full daylight mode allows it to be set during daylight).

> Low battery indicator (flashing red LED on front to indicate battery is not charged enough for unit to function) this is useful to trouble shoot (which I have not had to do).

> 15 foot cord between solar panel and LED motion sensor with quick connector on end of wire.

I installed the unit on the side of the house where it never gets sun, so I used the full 15ft of wire between the solar panel and LED light.

Very happy with it and works better than I expected.

Perfect for lighting up dark areas without having to run 120V lines. Light levels are perfect for walking around. I mounted mine about 12 feet up and still have plenty of light on the ground (the higher you mount any light the lower the levels of light you will have on the ground, but you will get a wider coverage area)

UPDATE JUNE 2010:

1 year and 5 months later the solar light is still working great, no regrets and performance seems to be just as good as when we bought it. Range of sensor can be up to 25 feet, maybe more. Since this unit went on sale there have been others with similar claims and higher LED counts, but so far I have been very satisfied with this purchase, which is rare for solar units as they tend to loose performance, and with me being a critical eye from an electrical engineer designing other solar products. For the price you can not make one yourself.

Our solar panel gets about 6 to 8 hours a day of sun and is located in the north east of the country, with cold winter temperatures, and short winter days, with even less sun light to charge, and longer days, the unit still continues to light and work when needed.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2010:

Still works great, not something easily said about solar items after almost 2 years of use.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2011:

Still working great, almost 3 years of use in hot weather, wet weather, and snow/freezing temps. Only thing to report is that sometime over the summer one column of LEDs went out, but still plenty bright and doing it's job! Still original battery, not bad for charging/discharging every day.

UPDATE MARCH 2012

Well, it looks as if the unit finally stopped working, not sure if it was the battery or the switch (when I opened the unit the switch was rusted and would not move. The solar panel was hazed over (typical of epoxy covered solar cells) but was still functioning. Not bad for just over 3 years for a solar item without any maintenance. Solar does not last forever, especially at this price and for what it does. I have repurchased this item to replace the original and the new one works just as well as the original.

I ordered this motion activating flood light to light my driveway when walking to my vehicle or getting out when returning home. It provides sufficient light to see where I am walking without worrying about triping over unseen obstacles. I bought one from Costco about a year ago to see if it would perform as I had hoped and indeed it did. It is still functional and working as it did when it was new. The original one is approximately a year old. I bought another from Amazon to expand the area of the light to include my walkway to the house. They were very essy to install and both are working as they should. The solar panels even provide enough energy for the light when the day was rainy and overcast. I'm considering buying another for the back of my house to replace the existing AC powered light. I live in the Pittsburgh area and it is not noted for many bright sunny days so I was concerned when I first purchased it but my fears were put to rest after about 2 weeks.

Purchased (1) one 45 LED XEPA Solar Sensor Light At COSTCO 1 year ago. Six (6) months later I purchased my second identical XEPA! I was so pleased with my first purchase. Apparently that was my curse? My first light starting giving me problems. Sporatically coming on with the sensor, to not working at all. I now use it as a nice BIG work light in my shop or on my vehicles!! I got a good year out of that one (1), and now that might explain why COSTCO was clearing them for $38.00!!! The second (2nd) one however will only pick up at a range of about 8 or 10 feet and will only stay on, maybe 30 seconds??? So I would say this one is on its way out as a reputable Motion Detector Light???

Sooooo, I personally would not recommend these solar lights even at $38.00. I do believe a little more integrity in the electronics it would be a beautiful light.

Honest reviews on Apex Xepa Solar-Powered LED Light with Motion Detection

Purchased 7/25/10 and installed months later. Worked flawlessly for perhaps two years. Moved and took it with me. Reinstalled a couple months after the move and it still maintained a charge despite not having been plugged in for over 2 months. The plastic cover over the motion sensor got broke in the course of moving it from its original location at the old house so it doesn't look quite as good, but it continues to function but sporadically. Sometimes flashes on for perhaps a full second, but won't stay on. Perhaps I need to see if someone has meddled with the settings but seems unlikely. 1 star for too easily breakable plastic lens over the motion sensor, but I'm being a little harsh: Plastic baked in Arizona sun for a full summer dries out and gets brittle. I liked the way the product worked nice bright light, don't know that I'd buy another given the roughly 2.5-3 year duration I've experienced. No savings with solar in this case. I have no idea why Amazon designates this a "kitchen" item.

I bought the product in early 2011. To date the product still works. However, it does not always turn on when I walk past it. As for illumination, it is decent. It shines about 20-30 feet, enough to not trip over anything on the floor.
