I received and tested-out this KingLite. I was hoping that it would be a spotlight, of sorts, but it didn't quite measure-up. Amazon calls it a flashlight, although I couldn't find the word "flashligt" anywhere in Pelican's literature or instructions...they just refer to it as a "Lite". Anyway, from the description, I was hoping that it would be bright enough to be used as a meager spotlight. I tested it against my 1.5 Watt 3-C cell LED flashlight. At 25 feet, my 3 C-cell LED flashlight actually was brighter. But at about 50 feet, the flashlight's 'light' disperesed too much to be useful. However, the KingLite DID give me 'some' illumination at about 50 feet. But I wouldn't think of buying this as a spotlight (although I bought a one-million candlepower 'spotlight' from another vendor, and actually, the KingLite is brighter at 50 feet.) So, if you just think of it as a bright, long-distance, 'flashlight', you'll be happy with it. However, with 8 D-Cells, it IS heavy. And the bulb has to be replaced after only 30 hours of use (according to the directions.) I guess that in order to get enough light, the filament has to be thin. If it wasn't for this last item, I would have rated this Lite as 4 out of 5. [Follow-up 2 months later: Now that I've seen the 'world' beyond this Pelican Lite (i.e.other similar designs by other manufacturers,) I would now rate this item as "2" stars. The compact, light Garrity 1 watt LED spotlight with just 4 AA battries, and 1/4 the price of the Pelican, 'markedly' outshines and outdistances (with illumination) the unnescessarily heavy Pelican which uses 1980's bulb technology, and 8 D cells. The 8 D cells give you no advantage...they're just heavy, expensive, and just barely equal the Garrity's light duration, as the Pelican two filamenst only last 30 hours each. So what is the advantge of 8 (expensive) D cells when they don't give longer light duration, nor greater illumination than the Garrity. The Garrity advertises 70 hours run time on its one 1 LED. My guess is that the Pelican was originally designed for a submersible situation, and that they adapted it (at a slightly lower price), to land use. But they remained with 1980's bulb technology. In addition, I bought a High Intensity Discharge (HID) Spotlight from Amazon for half the price of the Pelican. And while it is a rechargeable design, at half the price as the Pelican, and only a slight increase in weight, you get a spot beam nearly equivalent to a police helicopter. The Pelican's light (at twice the price) is downright enemic to the HID light, in comparison.]

I have owned this light for many years, many dives, prior the advent of slick LED lights there was no comparison for underwater diving at night unless you had a massive battery back pack cave diving light setup, and this King Pelican dive light still remains one of the greatest night lights at a competitive price for what it accomplishes underwater.

The key feature that trumps other dive lights is the MASSIVE reflector, by no means is this a spot light, again this is meant for underwater diving, as a scuba diver what matters most is the wide beam to illumiate the largests area of the sea floor or what have you, perhaps if your in a tight wreck a diver would want a narower farther spot, but this King does holds its own in the underwater world.

If you want a single emergency light to illuminate the entire house, this gets the job done (just stand up at the ceiling). Again its not a spot light, its a FLOOD LIGHT. As the previous review indicated, its is bright!

There is no other reflector size on the market (in this catagory) that operates underwater. FYI, the bulb life will last the average user a life time, and the bulbs are cheap compared to the rest.

The technology may be old, but its tried and true.
