The design idea is great but the execution is poor. As other reviewers have noted I found the light cute and child friendly. However, the chip\circuit that runs the light does not function properly. Hippo was not dropped or otherwise abused (don't get to write that sentence often).
1. Does not stay lit for long (even after holding the button for 3 seconds).
2. Leaving in transition mode is a futile gesture as the unit simply flickers and dies.
3. After charging for several hours the unit either stays on a meek red even after jabbing the button several times or gives false hope of a solid blue or green but then dies soon after.
4. Price is too high for something of this quality.
Other folks seem to have good experiences which leads me to believe KinderGlos's quality assurance department is awash with hippos mashing testing units with their giant fists.

My daughter loves 'hippos' so when we wanted a night light so she could feel ok when we put her to bed we got this. We had no issues with it (bought it in aug 2011) until a month ago when it didn't seem to hold a charge. Now when we put it in the base the red light comes on and then eventually shuts off and when you take it out it has no charge.We are going to order one more cause we really like the concept of it (doesn't get hot and can charge it on another room) but if the next one breaks in less than a year, I think its overpriced. Not sure if other people have run into it not really lasting over a year. On the website for Kinderglo they claim it should last 500+ chargings. We are nowhere near to 500 chargings (we used to only need to charge it every 3-4 days).

My 2 daughters love this night light so much they both sleep with theirs every night! I have a 2 year old and 4 year old. The bedroom we intend for them to share does not have any convenient electrical sockets to plug-in a night light. This product is perfect!! not only can I charge it in a different room for use at night but the charge also lasts for multiple nights if I forget to replace it on the charger. The illumination is just perfect and each color provides a different amount of light so there is an option for brightness. I originally ordered only one but not even a week after recieving the first ordered a second. We have two hippos (great for little hands to hold the arms) who have changed night time. I was even thinking of ordering a third 'just in case'. Only downside is the charge prongs are very delicate. I had to bend them back into the unit a couple of times (easily enough) so I try not to let my kids mess with the charging bases too much. The nice thing is they are so easy to put on and take off that my kids actually like too!! My kid has been loving this hippo night light since he was an infant he is almost 4. The color changing setting are great (many variations all in one button) and since my kid likes the green light you can stop on a color to glow all night or for a couple of mins then it will turn auto off. We took it camping and it held up to the abuse & grime. The charge lasted a long time and did not need frequent charging. We've bought several of these in the last few years. That may seem like a lot, but before them, we were using the tykelite products, which last a month or two. My kids love the kinderglo nightlights. We leave them on green all night. It tends to be the brightest color. I like them, because it makes it really easy to check on the kiddos and not wake them. We don't allow them to play with them or sleep with them, so I'm not sure how they would hold up in that scenario. I also wouldn't recommend dropping them on the hardwood floor! haha The chargers outlast the nightlights...we had the opposite problem with the tykelites. The battery will drain faster if you use the setting that changes colors. My son's last hippo lasted almost an entire year. I think for the safety and quality, they are worth the price.
