I needed to order (1) nice looking exit sign for a local business showroom as well as several more exit/emergency light combo units for the warehouse. I was a little concerned ordering this unit as to how it actually would look when it arrived. I can tell you now that I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the box.
First let me say that the box is large and heavy. It is double the size of a shoe box and thicker too. The components in it are heavy and thick. The acrylic sign part disconnects from the mounting box via (2) pull apart wiring harnesses and (1) hanging cord. The (2) wiring harnesses are for the (1) power from the transformer in the rough-in box to the led cluster/circuit board mounted to the acrylic sign and (2) the battery backup cord from the battery which is also in the rough-in box. The hanging cord allows you to hang the acrylic sign assembly from the rough-in box. It will be hanging down about 4 inches below the rough-in box and tilted to one side. Nicely made cord with an easy to clip on/off c-clip.
The rough-in box comes with a cardboard template that allows you to mark the appropriate sized cutout in your ceiling whether it be acoustic tile, drywall or other. This was very handy for cutting the drop-in ceiling tile I had to install it into. The rough-in box has two mounting options: (1) extend the side arms out and clip it over a drop ceiling track or (2) attach the supplied (4) expansion clips w/ screws and use them to compress and attach to the ceiling substrate. Either way it was very easy to install. The wiring compartment is about a 2"x3" wide rectangular side of the box with a clipped in cover plate.
Installing everything took less than 30 mins which included removing the old sign and it's round junction box. You will not need a junction box with this sign as the rough-in box serves that purpose. The acrylic sign even includes pre-attached cardboard templates at the sides to allow you to align any directional arrows you may need to attach. I didn't need to attach any arrows but at least 6 came in the box so I guess they gave me some extras. I can't comment on how well lit the arrows would be compared to the "exit" letters as the letters are recessed into the acrylic slightly (about 1/8" I guess). The arrows would be on the surface of the sign, but I imagine they would not detract from the nice cool glow of the letters. I have included a picture of the installed sign in the product photo above. Hope this helps. I used the clear acrylic sign, but also included in the box was a mirrored acrylic sign too. Green letters on a mirrored surface.
I hope this review and photo help to give a clearer idea of what this sign looks like. I think everyone at the business was thrilled. It's really nice looking and a great way to embellish a little more class into the entry/exit doorway of an establishment!
