I purchased the Sylvania Light Flute from BJ's as a 2-pack. They're great. The flexibility in how and where these lights can be used is perhaps their strong point. The included mount enables you to mount the light on a variety of surfaces and in a variety of configurations. It has a magnet in it so it can mount on metal surfaces. It also includes screws so it can be screwed down to a surface if need be. You could also use an adhesive disc so the mount could be attached to a wood or other surface.

The light itself is sleek and the brightness of the LED output is impressive. As an emergency light it's great. Takes up very little space. You can have the light sticking up vertically out of the mounting base to provide a good amount of light. I can also see how handy this would be while camping, or in an RV... maybe even in a dark closet for occasional use. The light is turned on by a small, rubber covered, push button at the one end. Batteries are changed by removing a small cap at the end opposite the push button and sliding out the light/battery assembly.

I really like this light. Because it can work in so many different kinds of situations and because of it's innovative design and sleek looks plus good battery life, I award it 5 stars.

UPDATE: 3/22/2013my lights are still going strong. Since it came up in comments, I wanted to add that these lights do not have auto-off. They stay on until you turn them off, or the batteries die.

I purchased three of these in hopes of using them for under the counter accent lighting. I was dissapointed to find out how directional the beams were. Even though there are multiple LEDs, they are all pointed in the create a narrow beam. At 5 feet I was getting a beam grouping of about 6 inches in diameter. The mounting bracket is genius and I could see this being a great light for camping and power outages. The light itself is pure white and is medium brightness. I ran a test and this light ran a full 15 hours before it got noticeably dimmer. The batteries than came with it were pre-installed and were already close to dead so expect to buy new ones quickly.

This handy product is well-designed and very useful. I have one on my workbench and also one in my office. The mounting disc has a magnet or you can use double-sided tape--or Velcro. Or just rest it on a desk! The "flute" itself is easily separated from the disc (if you have the base permanently mounted), but I like keeping both pieces portable.

In the garage I put the disc on the side of my rolling tool box (using the built-in magnet) so I can take it off and use it wherever I want. The base holds the unit firm enough so the light flute can be swiveled to any direction and it will stay there.

I'm planning on getting one of these for every room in the house, as they would provide sufficient and easily portable long-lasting light in case of a power outage. It also provides a lot of light in a camping tent!

1st, I agree with other reviewers, everything is true, except some parts:

I'd really like to give this light 5 stars, but it really is not perfect. The light itself and the base seem to be designed by two independent teams. While the light looks (almost...see below) like an Apple product, the base is ok, with flaws. First, the light comes way to easily off the base. The base "hugs" the light, but not enough. Any little accidental bump, the light will fall. 2nd, the base has two parts that rotate and snap onto each other. The clamps are way too small, as very little rotation will separate the two. The double sticky pad is weak. Use 3M's Command strips if you want to stick it to something.

Then, the almost perfect light...while bright, the angle of the leds is too narrow. Yes, they've used lenses to concentrate the light and make it stronger, however, I'd give up some of the brightness to get more coverage. It looks like a perfect solution for a small cabinet, however it is not, just because of the small angle. It cannot 'flood' the cabinet in light. If you bounce it, it's really weak. If it's direct, it's too narrow (you'll see 4 bright narrow beams of light projected onto whatever).

Then comes the on/off button. It is too little, too deep, too hard to press. You have to either be careful or hold the light while you push the button, because the light snaps off of the base to easily. While the rubbery cover gives it a cool touch, it was not necessary, or it should have been raised more.

The light looks awesome anywhere. Projecting it on a wall, the 4 beams gives the room a modern look and feel, however, having one led a little out of line compared to the other 3, it looks rather cheap than cool. I'm sure not all lights are like that, and with a tighter quality control, lights can be in line. However, the other flaws I mentioned, are design flaws rather than manufacturing flaws. The problem is, unless you spend a great deal of money, you can't really find a decent battery operated led light strip. I have not.

Meanwhile, I've found yet another use for it: laptop keyboard light. Use black velcro and stick it above the screen onto the frame of the display, and you have gorgeous light on your keyboard ;)

p.s. to Sylvania/Osram: stop packing the light in that ridiculously nice (and I bet expensive) clear round box. I know 'the wrapping sells the product', but put some of the money into the development of the light rather than into a throw away thing. Looking forward to version 2.0 of this light.

This is what it is: a flute with lights. It's beautiful in its simplicity, and it works amazingly well. I must say, I couldn't figure out how to mount it on the wall with the supplied instructions, as they're very vague. But I didn't need to, so that wasn't much of an issue for me, and I suppose if someone is determined enough to make it go on the wall, it'll go on the wall. And the base is white plastic, which makes it seem ever so slightly cheap-looking. The body of the flute itself is very nice, though, and the lights are aimed so that you get one spot of light about 3 feet away or more. The batteries are easy to replace, too; just unscrew the bottom white cap and the whole thing slides out of the metal body, lights, batteries, and all. Overall, a very nice light when you're waking up in the middle of the night and don't want to blind yourself.
