My criteria for a technical back up light was brightness, burn longevity, heavy duty all aluminum or resin construction, twist on/off, butt end snap attachment. I purchased two of these lights. They attach to the shoulder d-ring on my dive harness shoulder strap and hang downwards where they are secured in place with bike tubing (you will hear this described as a tech or hogarthian configuration, but any it just gets them out of the way but easy to reach).

I found these lights to be manufacturer packaged poorly on receipt but their rugged design really prevented any damage. Amazon packed the light in a brown box with an airbag in it. I think this was fine.

The output of the beam is well focused for a night diving backup light, it appears to be much brighter than many of the other smaller handheld underwater lights that are available and the burn time as noted is 3+ hours which is very impressive. You get a bluish light that is very good to dive with.

The twist on feature is excellent for my configuration of diving. I use a thin rubber dryglove and then polartec undergloves. I can easily grip the aluminum bezel and turn the light on and off with one hand, leaving it clipped to the shoulder straps. My gloves are off the shelf rubber Marigold gloves, and very grippy. I could see thick neoprene gloves or mitts having a bit of a tough time with the smooth surface of the bezel.

The butt end is drilled out for a lanyard. I threaded some line from my spool through the hole and secured a stainless snaphook to the end. The holes are offset in the butt end, which is a very minor negative if you attach a snaphook.

I have about 20 dives on these lights down to 135 feet with absolutely no issues. In my opinion they meet my criteria and exceed it.

So would I recommend this light to another diver? Yes! Would I buy this light again? Absolutely. It CLEARLY is comparable to lights that you see for sale in the $65 to $125 range.

Update 11/2012: I am still using both of these lights. I found that the small internal contact for the battery holder broke on one light. I replaced it for a few dollars with a part purchased from the Dorcy website. Very cool that you can buy parts for this flashlight! I would still rate this a five star product and recommend it, however since its inception there are more efficient LEDs on the market. I look forward to seeing how this is upgraded.

I have used this light in Cozumel drift during night dives, cenotes of the yucatan cave diving, northeast wreck diving off the Jersey shore, and in the St Lawrence seaway. I bought it to use as a backup light during scuba and when my DiveRite 10 watt HID failed in the cenotes (caves) I took this out and finished my dive with it. I actually carry two of these. I have owned greenforce, halcyon, diverite, princeton tech, salvo, and oxycheq lights as my 2nd primary and back-up lights and this light very literally drowns the others out. In a side by side comparison or even on paper, 180 lumens from this dorcy, the metal housing with dual o-rings, the 6 AAA ease of operation, and the tiny pricetag (you can buy two of these for the price of one of the others) this light is simply impossible to beat (currently).

Only 1 negative. The holes that are cut into the base have not been finished in a smooth manner and the 90 degree angle can be quite sharp if you are tying on a bolt snap. There are two easy options to surpass this issue. You can use a SS split ring to attach your bolt snap or smooth out the edge with a hi-speed rotary tool (dremel). A more challenging option is to have the bolt snap welded to the light (although the light housing is aluminum whereas your bolt snap is SS).

I purchased this light as a backup and I was very impressed with it! I have taken it down to 120 feet with no issues and it provided a bright spot with a sufficient amount of spill light. Dorcy has responded quickly to my questions and upon further research, I have found a lot of good experiences with their customer service. The LED isn't regulated, meaning that it starts out at a peak of 180 lumens and slowly loses brightness as the batteries drain as opposed to a regulated LED that would burn at maximum intensity for a set amount of time (ie 3-4 hours) and then drop off sharply in intensity. I found almost no difference in brightness after 3 hours in a test I did at home, so I don't see this as being a negative. It seems to be sturdily built so I'm hoping this will last for the long haul. Overall, probably the best value in dive lights right now.

Several years ago I bought a total of 5 Dorcy 41-4750 180 Lumen High Flux LED Cyber Light flashlights (2 for me & 3 more on behalf of friends who liked the 2 I'd bought). We all loved them for about a year until each one started malfunctioning, all with the same problem: They would blink on and off randomly, without rhyme or reason.

I also bought this Dorcy 41-1467 220 Lumen Super Flux LED Submersible Dive Light BEFORE the other Dorcy flashlights had begun to malfunction. I am sorry to report that this submersible flashlight has now started to blink on and off at random times, just like the 5 other Dorcy flashlights I had bought. (I only used this submersible flashlight underwater a time or 2 -we normally used it only on dry land like a regular flashlight.)

My friends and I treated the flashlights well. They were never exposed to temperature extremes, never dropped, and used only occasionally for walking the dogs a few evenings a week. We changed the batteries regularly and never had any battery acid leaks.

I have read in reviews here on Amazon that a number of other owners of the Dorcy 180-lumen flashlight have also experienced this exact same problem the intermittent blinking on/off. It makes these flashlights essentially useless.

My friends and I loved these Dorcy LED flashlights for the first year or so when they worked, they worked fantastically and were superb flashlights. But they are advertised to have LEDs that will last for many, many years -and in no case has that claim proved to be remotely true. When 6 out of 6 Dorcy flashlights present the exact same problem, there must be some kind of equipment or design failure behind the problem.

Based on the reviews I have read on Amazon and elsewhere I have recently switched to Fenix brand LED flashlights. I have bought them in 3 different sizes in the last few months and so far absolutely love them -they seem much more solidly built than the Dorcy products, though only time will tell if they perform well in another year or 2.

Anyway, I would recommend that people carefully read through the low-scoring reviews of Dorcy flashlights before buying -you will find that many reviewers experienced this exact problem of lights that go on/off randomly (and very frequently) without apparent rhyme or reason. A flashlight that does that is basically useless and a waste of hard-earned money. It's a shame because they were really great flashlights while they lasted, but they didn't last very long for an LED flashlight.

I have owned a half dozen maglites, and I'm not sure I will ever buy one again. This light is absurdly bright, incredibly solidly built, and overall an exceptional value. I won't waste any time restating what has been said here plenty, but here are some details that I didn't see anywhere else:

There is no focus adjust at all (I think it is good actually, but be aware either way). Twist enough and it comes on, twist more and nothing happens. There is only one mode-an almost laser-like spot beam.

You open it to put batteries with the same twist element you use to turn it on, but it takes a good dozen turns to open it so it won't happen accidentally.

It sits very comfortably in the hand, but the metal is fairly slippery. My only wish is that it was textured like a maglite. I'll probably wrap some paracord around it to improve the grip.
