I've been looking to replace the halogen floods in the pendant lamps over the island in my kitchen. The halogens are a little too focused for the work space, and at the short distance (about 30") the 50W bulbs will heat up anything left sitting under them.

I purchased these 8W Philips R20 floods from a local big orange store for about the same price as on Amazon, and am very pleased. Their output is more diffuse than other LED lights I've looked at which have been between 25 and 45 degrees a little to focused for my application. These are true floods, casting soft shadows unlike some other LED lights.

Light color is also very pleasing, just slightly cooler than the halogens they replaced, and they work just fine with my existing dimmer. In terms of heat, I can comfortably press the backs of my fingers on the bulb surface, and from an inch or two away there is no perceptible heat.

I replaced some R20 incandescent bulbs in the 4 inch cans in my kitchen with these. They are currently mixed and you cannot tell the difference between the incandescents and the new LEDs (I use Philips brand 45-watt R20 incandescents from Home Depot). My main gripe with the other LED replacements were the color (I preferred the warm 2700K color most replacements were 3000k). They also had to be dimmable and compatible with Insteon dimmers. I have only had the R20s for a week so I cannot vouch for their longevity but I've used other Philips LEDs (7 watt PAR20) and those have been going strong for 2 years and counting and Philips LEDs come with an excellent warranty.

Update: A list of LEDs I've tried:

1. Various Home Depot Ecosmart led bulbs (par20, a type, globe type great price but color is very white).

2. Phillips 7-watt PAR20 (closest color to incandescent prior to the new R20 but the beam was too narrow in my recessed cans, I also noticed that they were quite hot which cuts down on LED life. I re-purposed these for pendants).

3. Cree/Ecosmart CR4 (these actually replace the entire trim and are the best I've found but only the white trim is locally available I have a mix of black and specular trims. They are expensive for retrofit at 50 bucks each and I wish these were available when I built my house 2 years ago. The color is excellent but they are a lot brighter and more comparable to a 75-watt bulb. I use them with a dimmer at 50% or less). I've started to use the Cree's to replace my outdoor 4-inch cans since the Philips R20s are not designed for outdoor use. If price was not a factor, I would have gone with these in specular trim inside and out.

My house is full of halogen flood lights that have been going out. I've been searching for a replacement that used less power, created less heat and produced similar light. I've tried a few CFLs and a few other LED bulbs and none have done it for me. This one however has it all. It is a nice soft light. If I have it in a recess next to my halogens I can't tell which is which.

I'm going to replace every light in my house with these as they go out. Also, as the halogens are about $8 each and last a year or two these will save me money without even considering the electricity and heat-load savings.

EDIT: I have 9 of these now and have 4 more on order. I am slowly replacing all the halogen floods in my house as the halogens go out. I couldn't be more pleased with these bulbs.

I've bought multiple different types of LED bulbs for my apartment over the last year or two, and each time there was something that didn't match up well with traditional halogen bulbs. Sometimes it was so bad I went back to the halogen, sometimes I left it in, but noticed every time I turned on the light. (I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I was one of the most picky people you are likely to know when it comes to lighting.)

These are the first LED bulbs that I can honestly say are true replacements for the halogen ceiling bulbs I currently have in my apartment. I've been looking for a bulb that matches halogens in the following ways:

1) Flood angle

2) Color temperature

3) Dimmable

4) Instant-on

5) Brightness

These bulbs are almost 100% perfect. The color temperature is still a tiny bit cooler than the halogens, but the difference is too small for most people to notice (even if you stare intensely at two bulbs, one halogen one LED, most people probably couldn't tell).

I'm going to replace all the bulbs in my apartment with these (or the next version, whenever it comes out) and never look back.

This review and the detailed information within are aimed at homeowners looking for an energy efficient bulb to be used with Insteon dimmers. With that said, everything here also applies when used in other fixtures, but you will find most of the information is overkill. Please consider this when determining how helpful this review is.

For the Insteon user that likes to utilize scenes, lights' ramping up/down, etc. this is the best LED R20 flood I've found. I've tried dimmable CFL's with overall poor results. I've also tried other brands of dimmable LED's that have distinct brightness "steps" throughout the range when dimming (up and down). Because of these issues, I've continued to use energy saving Halogens in fixtures controlled by Insteon. I've now changed my 4" recessed ceiling fixtures over to the Philips LED R20 flood bulb, with great results because of the much improved dimming.

The ramp down is smooth with a gradual decline (no steps) throughout the range down to 10%. At 9% it turns off and takes 3.0 seconds to go completely dark. I suspect a capacitor is discharging for this final ramp down. The entire range of dimming looks natural and smooth at a ramp rate as slow as 30 seconds, longer than that and the final 10% goes dark noticeably quicker than the previous 90%.

For the ramp up, it turns on at 10% and comes to that level in less than 0.5 seconds. This quick on is hardly noticeable at ramp rates of 2 seconds or quicker. At slower rates, the initial on to 10% is noticeably quicker than the rate for the remaining 90% up to full brightness.

So in conclusion these bulbs function and look similar to incandescent/halogens in home fixtures controlled by Insteon as long as: 1) your up and down ramp rates are within the parameters described above; and 2) you don't need the bulb to hold at a dimmed state lower than 10%. Note: at 10% this bulb maintains its 2700K color whereas an incandescent bulb goes orange, and the light output is approximately equivalent to a 15% setting for a Philips Halogena 40 watt R20 halogen bulb.

I'm very happy with these considering the energy savings and subsequent reduction of heat output. I highly recommend them for normal applications, and especially for the more discriminating Insteon applications.
