"Are they on yet?" the spouse asked after I plugged in our new Vaster floor lamps. Unfortunately, they were. I give IKEA big credit for pushing LED lighting and the design of this lamp is smart. It's a joy to look at this study in minimalism. But the light that comes out of this lamp is so weak that it's basically useless. I placed them in opposite corners of my den, where the light reflects off two walls and the ceiling. But even there, the lamps barely make a difference to the room's light. (And when I placed them in the middle of the room, it was hard to tell if they were on, at all.) It's an "accent lamp" but not a serious light source. Think of it as a sculpture of a bubble on a tall stick that emits a little bit of light.
I don't think I'm the only one who has a problem with this. I just noticed that several IKEAs in my area (Greater NYC) have reduced the price of Vaster from $69 to $59.
My HOPE is that IKEA gets wise and offers a brighter replacement "bulb" for this piece. I'll certainly continue to pester the staff at my local store about this, along with emails to co. management. Why put so much effort into this? Well, I love the concept of this lamp. It's just that the execution needs more work.
