Built-in LED lights are clearly the way to go. The lamp looks sturdy and weatherproof, although I need to put a bead of caulking around the base before the rainy season starts. Installation instructions were too small to make sense of, but it was easy to figure out. The mounting hardware is very adjustable.
The light level is what I expected. It's not like a spot light, which I have on the other side of the garage. The LEDs themselves all point down, but the crackle glass distributes their light more broadly.
It is very economical, which is why I got it. The bulbs are rated for approximately 10 year life.
The one thing I don't like is that the lamp is ALWAYS ON, 24 x 7. I calculated that the electricity wasted will cost only about $10 a year, but it irritates me every time I see it in daylight. I would have happily paid $20 more for one with a daytime auto-shutoff. Like most So. Cal garages, there is no easy way to shut it off from the house.
