Finally!... a solar light that actually does what the package says it will! I have a few other crank lights and this one is the best so far. Build quality is excellent. It puts out a lot of light for a long time. Remember to charge this outside when you can this makes a big difference and will run bright well over 3 hours after a full day in the sun. Home/car windows may block some of the charging power of the sun. It will charge on a cloudy day also but not as well. The other thing I like about this product is that it continues to glow dimly for many hours after peak brightness expires and makes a great sleeptime bathroom/nitelight.

Love the easy to find color and handy carabiner clip. The white and black rubber facing around the lens comes off which allows for easy lens cleaning. I attach this to the top of my backpack and it serves me well throughout the night while in the bush nice to not have to wind it all the time! You will never be without light and can crank it in the on position for a SECRET SUPER BRIGHT MODE!! The only negative is that the crank handle is a bit small to grab but it works. I'm thinking of fashioning an extension that could slip over it. Don't get me wrong, this light wouldn't be my first choice when the brightest light is needed but it sure is convenient. I got it on clearance at Target for 9 bucks... well worth the price and performs as advertised!

Update 2/12: Still works great but after charging numerous times in the hot sun the white rubber facing started to yellow and crack. It has withstood hard use, drops and even rain. I did buy another when it was on clearance again. This light is well worth the money!

Update 6/13: I now own 3 of these lights. The original one rides in the console of my car and stays charged by indirect sunlight for whenever I need it. It works as well as day 1 and is still bright and long lasting. I'm amazed at how far ahead of the competition Energizer was when this light was first available... and still is! With more than 2 years of service I can give it my highest recommendation!

Since we are heading into storm season here, I started thinking about flashlights. I checked my available stock, and low and behold: most were dead. I figured there must be a more reliable alternative and hopped online to find this.

Pros:

1) The build quality, considering it is almost entirely plastic, is pretty solid. I've already dropped it once (of course) and it still cranks and fires up with no problem.

2) The light output is surprisingly strong. I'm not exactly an expert on flashlights, their light output or whatever, but within my darkened house, the three LED's put out a steady, bright white light that does exactly what you would want a flashlight to do.

3) The crank moves easily, and makes a whirring noise as you spin it. It isn't too loud to operate, although it did grab my dog's attention momentarily. The box says that 1 minute of cranking = 3 minutes of light, though I have found that to be a slight understatement. It seems like it burns longer before dimming, though I haven't timed it.

4) Light weight so it's easy to store and carry with you.

5) Housing is mostly bright red so its easy to spot in a pinch.

6) The cranking handle folds nicely and nearly flush against the small handle for carrying comfort.

7) The back of the handle is a carabiner clip. Its a little thick, and doesn't open up very widely, thus limiting how easily it could be detached from something or even what one could attach it to. But its there, and I'll bet someone will make use of it.

What's not so perfect (purely subjective):

1) The entire body is a bit small: I measure it at roughly 5 1/2" in length. I don't have large paws, so this fits in my hand well. However, any smaller and it would be really tough to grab on to. (On the flip side, this may also be a 'pro' it's small size = increased portability and storage potential).

2) The entire body is pretty smooth. It would be nice if it had some sort of texture to it. If this thing gets wet, or is handled with wet hands or gloves, it may become slick.

3) Not waterproof (that I can tell).

4) The knob of the crank is very small; I have to use my finger tips to pinch it and crank the generator. I can live with it, but if you are wearing gloves or, perhaps, play for the Lakers, it may be bit too small for use.

Really, its a very handy little gadget to have when you need a flashlight in a pinch, and don't need to worry about the batteries being dead. I'd love to get a second one for the glove box of my car, but I don't know if the hot/cold season would shorten the lifespan of the non-removable batteries (I assume there comes a point where no amount of cranking will make the batteries hold a charge).

Hope this helps!

I just purchased this flashlight locally for $17.75. I am impressed by it's sturdy design. I am always looking at solar and crank flashlights at sporting good stores and usually disapointed by their cheap flimsy design. This Energizer flashlight and the crank handle feels study in my hands even though it is plastic. The light was medium-low bright. But fine for emergency situations. On the package it says "Batteries Never Need Replacing" which is why I bought it. In the past every time I went to use a traditional battery operated flashlight it never worked because the battery was bad. This one is charged by either the crank handle or solar power. It is small in size, 2 inches by 5 inches. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because of the expensive price. It seems more like a $10.00 item. But I really like it.

I wrote the first half of this review last year. Now I have a couple of these flashlights. (In a drawer with my emergency candles and with my camping gear). About every three months I crank them up and charge the batteries so they doesn't completely drain. Energizer makes 2 types of this orange flashlight. One with solar and crank, the other with just the crank at a cheaper price. I like them both. They still feel sturdy and work well.

Honest reviews on Energizer Solar Rechargeable 3-LED Carabiner Crank Light

Ok, I got mine at a 'national chain' because this flashlight never came-up on any Amazon searches. But that's the reason I got a good one...because I could tell which one in the store had the best 'convergenge pattern' of the 3 LEDs...so that they all focuesed into a single light beam. In any case, it runs at full brightness, for about 25 minutes, after only 2-3 days (on a window sill) with only rainy, overcast outdoor light. And it's brightness is far better than the other 2 crank flashlights I own (even though this one is also powered by solar cells). The brightness is equal to a few battery flashlights I own that are approximately 25-30 lumens in brightness. No, that's not 'blinding', but compared to other solar and crank flashlights I have had, or still own, this one is far better.

Have you ever reached for a flashlight only to find out that the batteries are dead? This light solves that problem. I keep it hanging in my truck so the battery is always being charged. It's not quite as bright as I thought it would be but that's on me. I still don't understand the LED ratings. The brightness is adequate. It's a buy.
