We have a bunch of Malibu lights around a pool, up lights on the trees both in the front and back. About 10 or 12 are the bollard lights that surround the pool deck for nice ambient lighting and about 10 up lights on the trees between the front and back. I replaced them all with these bulbs. They fit into the Malibu lights that use the MR16 halogen bulb. The lights don't have a built in reflector. I put them into the Malibu 20-Watt Black Flood Light (8301-9602-01), Bollard Light (8401-9303-01), and one other type of flood light (??? model). I was running 900 watts of lights between the 20+ fixtures. I was able to remove the 600 watt transformer since the power requirement is so much less and am dumping the 300 watt for a small 100 watt transformer.
These lights are very durable. One bulb hit the ground very hard and it worked fine.
The lights are super bright. It took a little getting use to the "daylight" appearance rather than the yellow halogen bulbs. I really like the look and power consumption difference.
Update 11-08-2011: I dropped from 900 watts (two transformers) down to a single 100 watt a month or two ago. I am running 22 of these lamps between front and back and have had no issues.
Update: 07-06-2013: All 22 lights still running. I haven't had a single one go out. My power supply stopped working a few months ago, replaced that 100 watt with a new one and all is good.
Best Deals for Lighting EVER 2 Watt MR11 LED Bulb, CREE LED, 12 Volt Low Voltage
First drawback is its larger than the standard MR11 bulb and therefore protruded out beyond the metal shroud that is meant to conceal it.Second, one of the two bulbs began to smoke immediately. So much that we were concerned it would catch on fire. And finally the odor from the burning bulb was significant.
Honest reviews on Lighting EVER 2 Watt MR11 LED Bulb, CREE LED, 12 Volt Low Voltage
The color and brightness of this bulb is outstanding, as described in the suspiciously similar and technically accurate reviews posted earlier. From a color accuracy perspective, it's probably the best halogen replacement I've ever found. That's the good news. The bad news is that (as indicated in the specs but not in the description) it's not dimmable. Technically it is, but the bulb will flicker below a certain level, and I'm assuming if it's not designed to be dimmed, then doing so might shorten the intended lifetime of the bulb. This is a big count against any high-intensity lighting option, since fixtures using these types of bulbs are often used on dimmer circuits.
The really bad news is that this bulb buzzes/hums when it's on--at least it does in the fixture that I'm using it in: an IKEA GRUNDTAL cabinet light . And that's a deal breaker.
I was cautiously optimistic about this product, particularly after seeing a collection of reviews that read more like press releases than feedback [I'm just sayin']. I bought only one as a test, and I'm glad I did. I'm guessing I'll be taking advantage of the product's advertised "30 days money back guarantee" now.
Update: It's interesting to note that after my comment about the suspect reviews, they're gone! Huh. I think that's enough data for me to conclude that I'm not going to trust this vendor.
