I purchased my E2D LED Defender about 3 years ago while I was in Iraq. I needed a second light in addition to the tac-light on my weapon (SureFire Scout Lite M900...highly recommended as well). Few notes below:

Durable: The LED feature sold me. Far more durable than the regular bulbs. There is a great lens on this light. Very thick and does a great job focusing the light. Also, I don't know if this is a specified feature, but my light spent over a day wallowing in diesel fuel (almost completely submersed). I cleaned the light with non-corrosive oil and that was it...still lighting up the night.

Shock Proof: I have no idea how many times I dropped this with no negative effect to the light. This light was on me during a dismounted patrol when we were hit with an enemy fragmentation grenade. It blew out four of our tac-lights on our weapons, but I had my E2D as back up to assist in clearing the area. The light was clipped to my belt on the side of the blast, so it was even more exposed than my weapon light.

Battery life: Dual output feature is great. I sort of overlooked this feature when I purchased it. Having a high output and low output is an excellent ability for the user. High output is great for outdoor use and temporary blinding. Low output is ideal for indoor use when you don't want to compromise your natural night vision.

Defender Bezel: Another feature I overlooked. I never used it in a 'defensive' manner, but it contributes to the durability. Dropping the light lens first, countless times, has done nothing to the light. Additionally, this bezel is great for breaking windows (non-ballistic of course). Occassionally breaking a window on a local national's vehicle/home is mission essential (extracting people from vehicle accidents, gaining access to the vic/house without using a known entry point, or many other reasons). Hot knife through butter.

So far my light has spent 10 months in Iraq, 13 months state-side in training areas, and 12 months in Afghanistan. Initially, I was apprehensive about paying $120 for a backup light. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid twice the asking price. This is one of those items that is an essential part of my kit and I will own one for the rest of my life. Should this one ever fail...doubtful...I will certainly purchase another one. I'm not sure why it is so much now, but look around the net for the same light. I know you can get it for less.

***Update***

It also survives saltwater. Again, I cleaned the two rubber o-rings with a non-corrosive oil and they are still good to go.

I've had this light since 2008 and it goes everywhere I go. It is still a little expensive, but since it lasted so long, I cannot complain. The only thing I have replaced is the batteries. The only thing you might "add" is a nylon carrying case. The belt clip, although very strong, will dig straight into your hip. Otherwise, it will last forever.

The thought of spending $150 on a flashlight was completely absurd to me. That is until I saw what a $150 flashlight could do.

I don't know how else to say this. This illumination tool will completely change the way you do business. For the average person, a flashlight is sort of a novelty device that can come in handy once in a while. For campers, emergency workers, and disaster conscious folks, the usefulness that the E2D LED Defender brings to the table is a bargain at $150.

Not only is this thing ridiculously bright, but it's bright in a way that is completely next level. This is no less than a search light or spot light. It doesn't just make things more visible, it mimics sunlight. You can see vivid colors and depth and this thing casts it's light FAR.

I mean I-can-look-into-the-bushes-two-blocks-away-far.

And to top it all off, it's strong enough and shaped just right incase you ever need to take a chunk out of some idiot's head after you just blinded him. Seriously.

You will NEVER find me without my torch. I could be wearing a 3 piece suit and you can bet money that I'll have my E2D LED Defender and a pocket knife on my person. It's become THAT integral in my daily life.

You will not be disappointed.

This has become my second Surefire flashlight in 13 years. Ironically, Surefire seems to make such a dependable, durable, and well-designed piece of equipment that I can not be the frequent customer I should be. Prior to this I owned a 9N flashlight, but the bulb assembly finally broke and can not be replaced.

Enter the E2D LED.

I was first impressed with the smallness of this flashlight. It fits very nicely into my hand, and equally so in a pocket. It feels very light. The double-tap activation switch works well, and I believe it to be a great bit of practical design. I do not miss the "twist" type of activation switch from my previous Surefire. Switching from High to Low power on the E2D LED does take a bit of practice, but once you get your timing down, it's not a consideration.

The full-power brightness of this light is awe-inspiring. I still feel almost blinded when initially firing this light up. I sometimes squint to overcome it. Seriously. The lower lumen setting is more than adequate for most night-work, but I can see the effect of shining the full-power light into someone's eyes. The light cast by this flashlight is smooth, even, and far-reaching.

The ruggedness of the flashlight is good. The lens is well protected and sturdy, and the light has yet to fail due to mechanical defect. I've had it for roughly 6 months now, and it has become an almost daily-use tool. Incidentally, I am still on the first set of batteries.

My only gripe with the flashlight is that the tail-cap prevents "flat-thumbing" the activation switch. It's hard to describe, but you have to almost reach your thumb over the tail cap wall, and point inwards ever so slightly to activate the switch. For momentary activation it's no problem, but to click the light on permanently takes some finesse. This is by no means a problem overall, but I figure I have to find some flaws, right?

In the end, this flashlight is well worth the initial high cost. If it lasts the 13 years that my 9N did, I will consider the cost to be a steal, actually. The powerful brightness of the flashlight, the ergonomic feel, and the fact that it has an incredibly technical (almost Star Wars) like look makes this the best flashlight I've owned.

This is one mean piece of equipment, and will surely last through some high abuse.

Honest reviews on SureFire E2D LED Defender Flashlight

I've had my E2D LED Defender for about a year now and I'm very happy with it. After a year, I'm still on my first set of batteries and original bulb (note I carry this often but use it only periodically, so your battery mileage may vary).

This is an excellent flashlight. It's light and compact enough to carry often, will slip into a pocket (including jeans with small pockets). Fit and finish and the overall 'feel' of the surefire is excellent. The light is EXTREMELY bright, and having the option of a less bright light (to use less battery power) is a huge plus. The 5 lumens mode is fine for most situations where you need a little illumination, and the 120 lumens provides the option of a truly bright light. I carry this often as a light, but also as a concealable impact weapon given the scalloped bezel and extremely bright light. I.e., if jogging at night, this is a great thing to carry for both a practical light and a defensive weapon, though note it would not be very useful against dogs.

4 stars great product, I can't give it 5 stars because of the ridiculous price (other manufacturers such as Fenix make excellent lights at better prices, but overall the Surefire does offer fit and finish that I haven't encountered in other lights plus the scalloped bezel).

I live in a hurricane magnet of a town three barrier islands out in the Atlantic.

Power outages are a common occurrence and power has been known to stay off for hours even in the off season.

I needed something powerful, long lasting, ruggedly constructed, and sensibly priced. Three our of four ain't bad. It has the brightest high beam I've seen in an LED. I actually ordered one from the company, but they backordered it for weeks. So I cancelled and went through Amazon and had it in three days.

One thing I didn't like, it came with no holder, not ever a lanyard. A bit classless considering the price of this thing. Very well constructed and clever high-low power settings. Crenelated is a mystery, guess professionals never know when they are going to have to knock someone silly with their flashlight.

Don't let the kids play with this light around the house, the high lumen high setting can blind you for awhile, which is the point when bad guys are the target.
