I went through about a half-dozen lights before settling on these PAR38 style from Sylvania.

This particular model is great because it has a rather wide beam dispersement (well over 11ft at height) and the color is great not too yellow/warm and not too white/cool. I wanted a light that felt a bit more solid then incandescent, so the slightly cooler index was perfect. I did sample the 4000K index as well but found the very cool white reflected off of my hardwood floors too harshly.

I did test every model of this line of Sylvania (as well as a few competitors) and found this to be the best balance. I found the "NFL25" models to be a bit too spot-like, the 827 model to be a bit too warm, and the 840 model a bit to harsh if you have semi-reflective floors.

Pros:

* Cooler color then incandescent but still warm and not harsh, best of both worlds.

* Cooler running temperatures in your recessed housings. (The heat buildup there normally shortens the life of CFLs you use there)

* Clean light with little beam scatter.

* Wide beam disbursement with this model, well over 11ft at height with the 40 degree angle.

* Rated to last for 55000hours, so I should never have to change them! (lets hope!)

Cons:

* Cost they're still too expensive to be bought because you "want to save money", won't hit that point until around the $30 mark. You're buying them for color/convenience/heat right now.

I have a house which was built a little more than 25 years ago, and has recessed incandescent floodlights in many of the rooms. This product is perhaps the best I have seen as a replacement. I tried to use the new compact fluorescent floodlight bulbs, but the recessed fixtures do not accommodate them because of the larger width of the portion of the bulb immediately above the base. These LED lights have a much more narrow neck than the compact fluorescent bulbs, and fit perfectly in the existing fixtures. The light color is a clean bright white without any of the bluish cast found in many of the fluorescent bulbs. They are a bit pricey, but much less than having to modify or change out the recessed fixtures, plus the bulbs last at least 10 times longer than their incandescent counterparts using only about 20% of the energy. Cosmetically, they look very good in the recessed fixtures. These particular bulbs are full floodlights, which are what I wanted, but also are available in a "narrow floodlight" version with a somewhat more narrow spread of the lit area. The only part which is not perfect is the dimmable range. They are dimmable with existing dimmer switches, but the dimming is more in stepped stages than over a continuous range; however, for my purposes it is fine. I am very satisfied with the product so far. Plus, they generate substantially less heat than an incandescent bulb, which is great for use when the air conditioning is running, saving even more energy.

UPDATE I have purchased and installed seven of these bulbs. As noted above, I was very pleased at first. After several months, two of the seven have stopped working properly. One started to take longer and longer to come on (normally, there is a slight delay a second or two between when the light is switched on and the light actually comes on), and now it does not come on at all. The other started flashing like a strobe light at 2-3 Hertz an interesting effect, but not at all satisfactory in actual use. No longer a satisfied user.

I didnt do as extensive a test as NewJerseyDan, that was an excellent reivew and commeasurate with my more limited findings. I cant afford these expensive lights but have a need for four in the kitchen because those lights are on every night. In the kitchen its more worthwhile spending $$$ on LEDs, so I purchased 4 different brands of LED/alternative lighting large lightbulbs. By far this Sylvania model is the best color and light of the four. It is also the coolest of the four and with quite high lumens at 860. Just bought it so cant speak to its endurance yet. Only gave it 4 starts because holly mole thats an expensive lightbulb, bring the price down!!

These are supposed to last longer but they don't. I bought 2, one continues to work and the other failed within days of installation.

These are great lights. I have placed 6 of them in my kitchen and 1 in the laundry room. I did a lot of research before purchasing LED floods. I was looking for a fairly white light and a true flood. I looked for the temperature and the color rendition for the lamps as well as the degree of dispersion. This lamp has an amazing 40 degrees. I noticed manufacturers claim 25 degrees as a flood but that wasn't wide enough to cover my kitchen. I looked for a lamp that could cover a room 12 feet wide with an 8 foot ceiling with two lamps about 6 feet apart. This lamp works fine. They replaced 65W incandescent floods. Laundry room is fine but not quite as suited. The light reflects off the white washer/dryer making it pretty bright. Still ok though.

The lamps do take about 1-2 seconds to come on, but at that point they are at full brightness. This is much better than the annoying CFL warmup. So far no problems. They have a robust construction with a huge heat sink to protect the solid state components. Should work fine.
