Maxxima's BR30 LED Light Bulb provides bright directional lighting for a recessed fixture while using absolute minimal energy but it is a bit heavy & costly. This bulb is sized 4.75 x 4 inches for a recessed lighting standard (also known as an indoor spot light/flood light.)

Pros:

1. Uses a mere 9 Watts of power according to manufacturer (bulb is imprinted 10.4W)

2. Should not contain Mercury like a Compact Fluorescent bulb (although side of bulb has icon indicating not to throw this in the trash)

3. Plenty of illumination that is highly directional great for a swiveling recessed fixture

4. No glass breaking to worry about the exterior is made of a glass-like plastic and metal

5. The plastic cover diffuses the LED's light output to prevent it from being piercingly bright

6. The plastic cover has notches making it easy to grasp and screw in an added bonus when reaching overhead

Cons:

1. Not for outdoor use or in damp areas

2. Not recommended for fully enclosed recessed lighting fixtures

3. Not for use on a dimmer

4. Probably not a good idea to use this in a 3-way fixture

5. The bulb is a heavy 8 oz compared to about 2.4 oz for an incandescent light bulb of this standard. There is a metal heat-sink housing around the periphery of the bulb; its added weight might cause issues with a flimsy fixture

6. The bulb takes just a moment to come on after flipping on a switch I timed it at between 1 & 2 seconds

7. The bulb emits a pure white light, so don't expect any warm, amber tones. It does not seem bluish though.

8. The light is bright enough so you would probably not want it shining directly in your face or eyes it is okay pointing reasonably close to downward from overhead.

To summarize, this bright, directional LED bulb will work for the most energy-conscious of users, keeping in mind its limitations. It would be ideal for an interior, non-enclosed recessed lighting fixture that points downward. It would also work in a torchiere style lamp or a track-lighting canister either of which is deep and wide enough to hold the bulb, keeping in mind the weight of the bulb and that the light is very directional.

On one hand, this product is going to be either a 4 or 5 star item if you have overhead recessed lighting fixtures and care enough about saving energy to spend the premium. On the other hand, this would be a 0 or 1 star item if you think it is inexpensive with flexible uses like an incandescent light bulb.

With these, we have started replacing our CFL spots with LEDs to see if they hold up to their promises. Initial impressions are good...it is a light bulb, so here are the essentials. Hard to find a reason to give a light bulb 5 stars...maybe I'll feel different in a couple of years.

1. They properly fit the fixture, easier to put in than the CFL spots.

2. The light is cooler than a regular incandescent (expected), about the same color as the CFLs we have in.

3. You absolutely can dim these. I have a standard/cheap dimmer switch from the big orange home store installed, it dimes fine. I will note that it does not dim down as much as our incandescent bulbs...it is a bit brighter. That is a bit annoying, but certainly not a deal killer and by the time we get them all replaced I won't notice.

4. They produce very little heat, about on par with a CFL.

That's about that. I wanted to get in based on other reviews I read saying you cannot dim them and note that you actually can.
