I used these lights to add some unobtrusive safety lighting to our basement stairs. I use three to provide enough light in a very dark stairway. The sheet metal boxes are solid enough for rough in and have ample options for mounting. Faceplate held on by tensioner is nice and solid. I'm using some CF bulbs in them with no problems. Took me while to locate these fairly simple stairway lights, but the are perfect when you are roughing-in. Probably hardy to retrofit with these!
Nice product.

Halo H2920ICT 9 3/8-Inch Step or Wall Light, WhiteA couple of years ago, I installed one of these in a house being remodeled. Bought it at Home Depot.
The 9 3/8" refers to the width of the cover plate.
These are designed for a rough-in installation (pre-drywall), as they have nailing tabs on each end. If it's an existing installation, cut the tabs off and screw the rough-in box to a stud after drilling a few holes through the box. It's best to attach it on at least two sides, otherwise it will not be a solid install.
You'll need a 14/2 (with ground) cable running to this fixture, hopefully controlled via a switch. Be sure to attach the bare copper wire to the inside of the box with a machine screw, so the unit is properly grounded.
The instructions say to use an A19 25 watt incandescent light bulb, but those don't give off much light. In any case, the 25 watt maximum is a heat rating, meaning a bulb much greater than 25 watts would generate too much heat to be fire-safe. The solution is to use a compact fluorescent bulb. A 13-watt CFL (60-watt incandescent equivalent) or 26-watt CFL (100-watt equivalent) will provide plenty of light.
Once installed, the spring-loaded cover-plate is easily removed for bulb replacement, painting tasks, or cleaning.

As a retired electrical contractor, I'd say this was a very basic step light for an appropriate price. My intention was to install it in a concrete wall, which it is not specifically designed for. By filling the various small holes in the box so as to keep water from the fully grouted wall from running in during grouting, it fit quite well into a 6 x 8 x 16 block cavity (with the appropriate amount of block sawed out, of course) and is now fully grouted in flush to the stuccoed wall. We will repaint the cover with hammered copper finish, use a CFL bulb, and wind up with a richer looking energy efficient step light for a modest price.Honest reviews on Halo H2920ICT 9 3/8-Inch Step or Wall Light, White
Good solid fixture, easy install (new construction), nice simple look. I painted the grill the flat wall color, looks very clean. using 1W LED bulbs to reduce heat build-up. Installed 3 fixtures on 1 flight of stairs and got very good coverage light dispersion. Good bang for the buck, if you're looking at this you have probably seen recessed light fixtures going for $100 plus that don't look any nicer.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Halo H2920ICT 9 3/8-Inch Step or Wall Light, White
